When it comes to good lighting, the future is now(ARA) - Imagine not having to
change a light bulb for years.There are light-emitting diode(LED) products available in 2010that will make frequent light bulbchanges so 20th-century.
The term LED immediately con-jures up images of traffic signals,brake lights and headlights on lux-ury cars, and indicator lights onappliances. That is about tochange. According to theAmerican Lighting Association(ALA), lighting manufacturershave invested considerable time,effort and research into adaptingthis super energy-efficient tech-nology for household use. Thetechnology has advanced enoughto win approval from the govern-ment's popular and well-respectedEnergy Star program.
"The year 2010 will be the firstyear when LEDs will explode inthe residential marketplace," saysarchitect Joe Rey-Barreau, educa-tion consultant for the ALA and anassociate professor at theUniversity of Kentucky's School ofInterior Design. "We are alreadyseeing amazing LED develop-ments in all parts of our lives, fromChristmas lights to LED TVs. Onearea where LEDs will become pre-dominant in 2010 is the categoryof desk and task lamps," Rey-Barreau says. "Another majordevelopment will be in replace-ment bulbs."

"You will see LED products meet- and in some cases outperform -traditional light sources," saysBrian Brandes, vice president ofproduct development for SATCO."The lighting industry is movingand merging technologies, quicklybecoming part of the electronicsmarketplace and presentingchoices previously not available.Today, there are LED options inevery lighting category," says
Brandes. For example, SATCOrecently unveiled a variety of LEDbulbs that can replace incandes-cent track and recessed bulbs aswell as outdoor spotlights.
In addition to long life, anotherbenefit of LED is energy efficien-cy. In the past, such productsweren't very consumer friendly,according to Glenn Siegel, market-ing director for Cooper Lighting, amanufacturer of lighting fixtures."[Earlier models] did not alwayssatisfy all of the homeowner'sneeds and wants. They neededlighting with lower operatingcosts and longer life, but wanted itto perform like an incandescent,"he says.
Cooper Lighting has an EnergyStar-qualified LED downlight thatreplaces the 65-watt BR30 lamp,but only consumes 14 watts. TheLED version, from its Halo divi-sion, closely matches the light out-put and color appearance of itsincandescent counterpart. Siegelreports that the LED model willstill emit 70 percent of its lumensat 50,000 hours and can bedimmed down to 5 percent. "If youuse the light for six hours a day, itwill last more than 22 years,"Siegel estimates.
Chris Primous, director of salesand business development forPermlight's Brillia LED brand, hasbeen impressed with the stridesLED lighting has made in just thelast several years. The technologyfirst emerged as outdoor path illu-mination and in under-cabinetkitchen lighting. "Now you're see-ing recessed, table lamps, chande-liers and pendants, all usingLEDs," he says.
Consumers who aren't sold onthe appearance of LED lighting -or its high initial cost - can takeheart. There are plenty of develop-ments in compact fluorescenttechnology arriving in stores in2010. CFLs are more affordablethan LEDs and now come in avariety of familiar shapes - a bigchange from the original spiralconfiguration. "You're also goingto see more dimmable CFLs com-ing onto the market, plus CFL
