MD Joins Sprint to Lead in
Biotechnology
"Gov. Martin O'Malley Monday unveiled a
proposal to invest $1.1 billion over
the next decade to cement Maryland's status
as a pre-eminent hub for biotechnology
research, including stem-cell studies aimed at
finding breakthrough medical advances. ...
Industry observers said Monday that
Maryland is uniquely positioned to capitalize
on biotechnology, with its prestigious
university research facilities and the National
Institutes of Health and Army laboratories at
Fort Detrick located in the state."

UM Team Wins Unmanned Underwater Vehicle Event"The University of Maryland says a team of engineering students (Clark School,Computer, Mathematical & Physical Sciences) at its College Park campus has won an underwater robot competition in San Diego. The underwater vehicle built by the team competed against 25 others from across the United States, India, Canada and Japan. The Maryland team won the competition in only its second year of participation. In the final competition last weekend,
robots had to find their way through a starting gate, follow a pipeline, dock with a buoy, and track and hover over an acoustic pinger before grabbing and surfacing with an
object that was taken to a floating ring."1 University of Maryland2 University of Texas at Dallas3 École de technologie supérieure4 Associated Press (Baltimore Sun), August 5
