Holy Week Worship Schedule
Maundy/Holy Thursday
April 2 - 7:00 p.m.
As we continue our Holy Week, our Maundy Thursday communion service will
bring us to an attitude of introspection and prayer. In our service we will look
back on Jesus’ journey From the Crèche to the Cross.
Good Friday
April 3 - 7:00 p.m.
As our Holy Week begins to wind down, we hope you will join us for service on
Good Friday. This service will be a dramatic reading of the scripture based on the
style of Tenebrae. Between the readings and the hymns, we hope you will have a
deeper understanding and gratitude of Christ’s offering for us.
Confirmation April 26 – 9a.m.
Our Confirmation is going to be a two year class, so this year we will only confirm our one 8th
grader- Lexi Oliver. Our 7th graders will be there in support and will be confirmed next year.
One youth or many, let’s celebrate with Lexi her accomplishment in confirmation!
Easter Sunday
April 5 - 7:00 & 9:00 a.m.
As our Holy Week comes to a glorious end, we hope you will join us for one of our worship
services celebrating the joy of Easter Sunday.
Also join us for breakfast between the services (8am) cooked by our confirmands and their
families.
As I sit at my desk I am just amazed that it is only a few short
weeks until Easter! There is still so much to do. I am thinking
that I still need help with the Easter breakfast (thank you
Danielle for reminding me), that I need to tweak the sign-up
sheet (thank you Terri for finding it), and I need to write my sermon. I haven’t yet heard if
my family will be coming here to Brodhead, so I don’t know how much I need to clean and
decorated my house. Then I looked back over my list… I realize that my issues and worries
don’t match what is truly important about Easter. HE IS RISEN! Jesus Christ, my Lord and
Savior, rose from the dead for you and me!
What must that time have been like for the people of that day? Let’s hear it from the local
newspaper, the Jerusalem Times:
From the Jerusalem Times, April 5th, 36A.D.
Chaos has erupted here in Jerusalem. As the good Jews of the city were quietly celebrating
the Passover feast Friday night, a disturbance happened just outside the temple. We have
confirmed reports that Friday night Jesus of Nazareth was convicted of treason and sentenced
to death. The Governor was unable to be contacted for comment. It was just outside the prison
compound that the crowds gathered and grew impatient. A violent scene took place and was
followed by a brutal crucifixion on the top of Calvary Hill. The reporters present reported that
many of the bystanders found the scene to be upsetting. The crowd began to disperse a little
bit after 3 in the afternoon when the authorities confirmed that Jesus and the other two
unidentified criminals were DOA.
It has now been three days since the rioting and crucifixion. We are now getting in
unconfirmed reports that the body has been removed from his tomb. The commander of
the Roman garrison informs us that they were standing guard throughout the night and
saw nothing out of the ordinary. However a woman who was found nearby has been caught
on camera saying, “He has risen.” Apparently there had been rumors circling this Jesus of
Nazareth who was quoted saying, “in three days, I will rise from the dead.” The true nature
of this unique occurrence is not yet known. Only time will tell the effects of this eventful week
here in Jerusalem. Only time will tell what is the truth.
Back to you in the Studio.
That was quite a week! Jesus, and his disciples went through a lot in just seven short days.
From sorrow to joy, hopelessness to faith. The despair must have been palpable during the
three days Jesus was dead. Yet, in the end, God’s power and love shines through. It is this that
we celebrate on Easter! So as you look at your worries and to-do lists, does it let God shine? If
not, maybe you too are concentrating on the wrong things this Easter. Let’s celebrate God’s
power and love this Easter and all year long.
God Bless,
Rev. Krystal Goodger
Upcoming New Member Class

meaningful and the congregation welcoming. We are a church that celebrates Open Hearts,
Open Minds, and Open Doors and we extend them to you! Allow me to take this opportunity

ministry.
We will also take time to address any questions you may bring to the gathering.
The spring orientation class will be Monday, April 13, from 6-7:30 p.m. Childcare will be
provided only if needed, so let us know by Tuesday, April 7 and we will make the necessary

know your pastoral staff, as well as getting to know other peers who are joining you along the
journey.

continue to do this without all those who volunteer. You all are to be commended
for stepping up and doing the Lord’s work. THANK YOU!
We will be having our planning meeting on Tuesday, April 7th at 6:30 p.m. here at church. All
are invited to attend. The signup sheet will be up at the back of the sanctuary starting Easter
Sunday, April 5th. Won’t you please pray about what you can do to help during our host week
and then sign up?
We are still looking for someone who might be interested in sending thank you cards out to
those who volunteer during the host week. Cards, envelopes and stamps will be provided. All
that needs to be done is address the envelopes.

3rd Annual Luminaria Dedication
On June 21st, our altar will be decorated with Luminaria dedicated to our
loved ones: in memory of those who have lost their battle with cancer as well
as in honor of those fighting and surviving. The Lumianria will then make their
way to Brodhead High School for the Relay For Life event on June 27th.
Luminarias may be purchased - $5 each - in the church office. There are a box of order forms
in the Welcome Center. There were also a number of bags returned to the church after last
year’s event. Should you wish to reuse one of them, see Terri during church office hours.
Please have your decorated luminaria bag back to the church by June 17th.
May 16th has been calendared for our spring work day. We will be starting at
8a.m. with coffee, juice, and donuts to get our energy up!
Gutters and taking a good look at the roof is planned.
A sign-up sheet will be started in April so that we know how many to expect.
After all, we don’t want to run short on donuts.
Thanks, Denise
FOOT CARE
Your feet have to carry you a long way, so treat them kindly. This is especially important for diabetics and those with peripheral artery disease. These conditions can cause foot damage over time either from poorly controlled blood sugar or from impaired circulation. This damage can be subtle but can lead to very serious issues.
Make inspection of your feet part of your daily hygiene routine. Check between toes for white patches (fungus) or for foreign material that can irritate. Trim toenails with a foot toenail clipper regularly. Use mild soap in small amounts. Moisturize feet with cream or lotion to keep skin supple and avoid cracking. Be careful if adding oil to bath water as it can make the bathtub slippery. Contact your medical provider for changes in color, shape, or sensation.
If circulation is an issue, you sit for long periods of time and are in the habit of crossing your legs, remember to reverse or uncross them frequently. Don’t smoke, as that also impairs circulation.
Assess your footwear. Shoes must fit without rubbing. You may have two different sized feet so try on both shoes when purchasing. Walk in the shoes to make sure the heels don’t slip and that there is ½” from the end of your toe to the end of the shoe. Don’t plan on having the shoe stretch. Soles should give solid footing and be non-slip. Pointed-toed shoes can cramp feet. Thick soled shoes give heels more cushion. Remember that always wearing high heels can damage feet.
Let’s look at some common foot problems that may need special attention. Corns and callouses come from chronic pressure against shoes. They may improve by rubbing with a wet wash cloth or pumice stone and wearing better fitting shoes. Do NOT shave them as cuts in the tissue create a means for infection to start. Warts are skin growths from viruses. Some over-the-counter products may help get rid of them but they usually require prescription medication. Bunions are swollen tender joints from wearing too small shoes. Taping, padding or wearing wide shoes may help but surgical intervention is likely, to correct the issue and relieve pain. Ingrown toenails are nails that actually pierce the skin as they grow. Remember to consistently cut toenails straight across and use foot nail clippers. If the condition persists removal of the nail or part of the nail may be required. Neuromas are built-up tissue around a nerve causing inflammation. Again, medical intervention is needed. Spurs are a bony bump on the bones of the feet caused by chronic physical stress such as jobs that require long periods of standing. Treatment of spurs can include foot supports, heel pads, heel caps or even surgery. Hammertoe is the shortening of the tendons of the toe joints that causes a toe to stiffen. It leads to pain and can cause balance issues. Surgery is likely the treatment of choice. Swollen feet are often a sign of other underlying health issues and should have medical intervention.
Medical follow-up for foot issues could be with a podiatrist. They are health care providers that perform exams, diagnose, and treat foot conditions. They may do some surgical procedures and prescribe corrective devices for the feet. A pedorthist is the specialist who will design and produce individually fitted shoes and foot supports.
Remember the old adage; take care of your feet and they will take care of you.

AARP Smart Driver Course
Monday, April 20th @ 9:00 a.m. ~ Fellowship Hall
Why Take a Driver Safety Course?
Because driving has changed since you first got your license.
Cars have changed. So have traffic rules, driving conditions and the roads you travel every day.
Some drivers age 50-plus have never looked back since they got their first driver's license, but
even the most experienced drivers can benefit from brushing up on their driving skills.
By taking a driver safety course you'll learn the current rules of the road, defensive driving
techniques and how to operate your vehicle more safely in today's increasingly challenging
driving environment. You'll learn how you can manage and accommodate common age-related
changes in vision, hearing and reaction time. In addition, you'll learn:
-How to minimize the effects of dangerous blind spots
-How to maintain the proper following distance behind another car
-The safest ways to change lanes and make turns at busy intersections
-Proper use of safety belts, air bags, antilock brakes and new technology found in cars
today
-Ways to monitor your own and others' driving skills and capabilities
-The effects of medications on driving
-The importance of eliminating distractions, such as eating, smoking and using a cell phone
After completing the course, you will have a greater appreciation of driving challenges and a
better understanding of how to avoid potential collisions and injuring yourself or others.
The AARP Smart Driver Course, offered by AARP Driver Safety, is the nation’s largest classroom
and online driver safety course and is designed especially for drivers age 50 and older. Over 15
million participants have gone through AARP Driver Safety classroom and online courses, taught
by more than 4,000 AARP Driver Safety volunteers.
AARP membership is not required to take the course and there are no tests to pass. The course
registration fee is $15 for AARP members and $20 for non-members.
Please contact Dean Braund @ (608)214-0130 with any questions about the course. To register
for the class call the church office, 897-2515, or email @ [email protected].
We’re Forming our team!
If you are interested in joining our BUMC Relay For Life team, please see
team captains Terri Braund or Chris Albert. All ages are welcome to
participate. Youth are invited to join with the permission of their parents.
The Relay For Life event will take place at the Brodhead High School track
on June 27th.
