What a Great Year!
We’ve had another busy and fun year at Brock! Students and teachers
have worked very hard to have a successful year. We are proud of all the
students’ accomplishments and encourage everyone to continue learn-
ing over the summer.
At this time, we would like to take the opportunity to thank Ms. Dixon for
all her dedication and commitment at Brock this past school year. Not
only has she provided the school with a wonderful French and music pro-
gram, she has also inspired us with her enthusiasm and energy with Cross
Country, Choir, the Winter Carnaval, the Grade 8 Ottawa Trip, and Track
and Field. We wish you all the best at your new school!
We would like to wish Mr. Crifo bon voyage as he takes a year of ab-
sence from Brock. We are excited to hear about his adventures when he
gets back. We are also pleased to welcome back Ms. Barbier , who will
be returning to Brock in September.
On behalf of all staff at Brock, we
would like to wish you and your family
a wonderful and safe summer break! If
you are coming to summer school, we
will see you at 9am on June 30!
Congratulations, Mr. Cheong!
After dedicating many years of his long teaching career to Brock, it is with mixed feelings that we wish Mr. Cheong well deserved rest and relaxation as he enters the next phase of his life. Mr. Cheong has and will continue to be a valued member of the Brock family. We wish you many years of health, happiness, bike rides, and dancing! We will miss you!

She shoots, SHE
SCORES! On
Monday May
11th, the gr. 7
& 8 girls inter-
mediate soc-
cer team went
to Carleton
Village for their tournament. They played
against Annette, Fern, Carleton and
Humewood. Annie in gr. 7 said “ I had fun play-
ing.” Jenny in gr. 8 said “I really liked playing as
a team.” Morgan, our goalie for the games,
said “ I liked being goalie because I had the
opportunity to block shots from the other
teams.” The team won 2 games, lost 1, and tied
a game. We all played great games and
placed 3rd in the tournament overall. Congrat-
ulations to the soccer team! Thank you to Ms.
Papel and Ms. Moreiro for doing a great job
coaching and training us!
Intermediate Boys Soccer Tournament
By Vic
The intermediate
boys soccer team
played at High Park
on May 14. The in-
termediate boys soc-
cer team played 3
games. They tied 1,
lost 1, and won 4-0.
They did a very good
job and did the best
they could. They had amazing coaches, Ms. Papel and
Ms. Moreiro. They helped the team get prepared for
the season by training, and practising games and
drills. The team hopes to play next year and that they
get to have Ms. Moreiro and Ms. Papel coach next
year again. Special mention goes to everyone on the
team for all the hard
work and thank you
very much Ms. Papel
and Ms. Moreiro for
helping us get ready for
the tournament. We
couldn't have made it
where we are without
your help.
Junior Boys Soccer Tournament
By Tarrick

3 games and did a good job playing their first
game. For their second game, the score was
1-3. In their last game, they were able to
dominate and win 3-2. They had a fun day
playing soccer and hope to play next year and
win more games. Special mention goes to Ili-
ja, Nick, Sam, Omar, and Zayne. Thanks to
Ms. Moreiro and Ms. Papel for helping them
get ready for the season and coaching them
to play their
best and to
work hard. The
team hopes that
Ms. Moreiro
and Ms. Papel
come back to
coach again
next year.
Junior Girls Soccer Tournament
By Isabella
On May 14, the junior girls soccer team brave- ly went to General Mercer Public School to face off against 4 different schools. Sadly, none of the schools showed up, so they played against General Mercer School. Due to the other schools not coming, the team did drills to fill up their morning. They passed the ball back and forth and made strategies. In the afternoon they had the game. They lost 0-2. Our team tried their hardest and did their best. They had a great time on the soccer team and can’t wait to join next year. Thanks to Ms. Papel and Ms. Moreiro for all their hard work!
Grade 2-8 Track and Field Meet and Finals
By Paul
On May 13 lots of the grades 2-8 athletes went to Birch-mount Stadium to participate and try to move on to the semi-finals and finals. Students were practising almost everyday to get ready for this big event. It was a fun and busy day doing all the events with schools all across the city. Most of the students placed top 8 but unfortunately they couldn’t move on. All of
the Brock students had fun and they can’t wait to go again next year. All of the Brock athletes would like to thank Ms. Samuel, Ms. Dixon, Mr. Crifo and all of the other staff and parents for helping out. We couldn’t have done it without them.
Four students, Makenna, Ilija, Morgan, and Paul advanced to the semi-finals on June 2. Ilija and Makenna did a great job in their races and got 12th and 10th. Morgan was 5th place for the Safety Javelin. Only one Brock student named Paul advanced to the City Finals by placing 4th in the javelin.
He placed 9th in the City Finals out of the best 16 people in the city.
Note: We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all of our phenome-nal athletes. You all worked so hard and accomplished so much. Special con-gratulations goes out to the students who advanced to the semi-finals, and to Paul for his fabulous performance at the City Finals. You all made Brock very proud. Thank you to Ms. Samuel for all your hard work to ensure so many stu-dents at Brock get the chance to be part of a team.
Kindergarten Track and Field
By Le Rong
On May 7th we had a Kindergarten
Track and Field. The JK and SK clas-
ses went out to the field and did activities that would be in track and
field. We had many different cool stations set up all around the
school yard. They were all run by the Grade
seven and eight students. Some of the sta-
tions were: hurdles, long jump, sprinting,
shot put, 100 meter, frisbee and the freezee
station. There was also music for the event.
There were seven groups and they rotated between stations doing
the fun activities and then everyone got a freezee at the freezee
station. Ilwaad’s favorite station was the freezees. Sophia liked it
when she got to run around the field. At
the end of the day they all had a lot of fun!
:)
Ultimate Frisbee Tournament
By Talena
On May 28th Brock’s Ultimate Frisbee team
went to Greenwood Park to play against 2 other
schools. They played 2 games and did great. The
first game they won 4-2 and the second they won
3-2. They all had a fun time playing against all
the other schools. Special mention goes to Na-
than, Mohd, Nick, Tristian, Hussein, Sophia,
Paul, Amir, Messiah, Isabella, Tarrick, Hemali,
Talena, Michelle, Annie, and Joyce. Thanks to
Rine and Ms. Samuel for helping the team get
ready for the season and do their best. Rine
taught us a lot of moves and plays that helped us
win. Ms.
Samuel
made sure
we had the
time to prac-
tise and
taught us
how to play
the game.
We all hope
to play again
next year!
Play Day
By Vanessa
On May 22, Brock held our Play Day event for this year. For the event, we had some kind twelfth graders from Bloor Collegiate come to organize and run the event for us. Two of the high school helpers came and announced what would be going on that day. They told us how things would work, and what we would do. This year, Play Day was themed as “Around the World.” During Play Day, we had events from all over the world. Each event was different depending on what part of the world it came from.
There were twelve different events that people could enjoy. From Italy, there were peo-ple doing face painting. There was hula hooping events that originated from England, parachuting events that came from Greece, an obstacle course to participate in from Ger-many, a balloon pop game that came from Ethiopia, basketball activities from the U.S.A, a game where you had to carry an egg on a spoon from Indonesia, a soccer shootout that came from Brazil, a 3 legged race that came from China, and a bean bag toss that came from India!
All afternoon, people were going from station to station and having lots of fun! To make all this happen, each station was run by a few Bloor students. None of this could have happened without their help! By the end of Play Day, everyone had tons of fun with all the different events! Once again, we couldn’t have done any of these cool events without the help of the awesome Bloor students! Thank you!
Red Maple Awards By Alisha
“A book a day keeps the boredom away .”
On May 12th, the grade seven class and a few grade eights went to the Red Maple Awards at Harbourfront. The Red Maple Awards are for intermediate students. There are 10 nominated titles
and we get to vote for our favourite book. It was special this year because 8 students from Brock got to be onstage at the ceremo-ny. Talena, Amir, Annie, Michelle. Tristan, and Cole got to hold the author signs. Hemali got to introduce Sigmund Brouwer and Joyce got to introduce Vikki VanSickle. They all did a great job and it was really cool to see them on stage.
The day was really fun and we met so many Canadian authors. The authors who won the awards were Eric Walters for the book The Rule of Three and Ro-na Arato for the book The Last Train: A Holocaust Story. We all had so much fun. Hemali said she enjoyed being out in the fresh air the most (even though it was kind of windy).
Jenny loved being there because we got to do what we wanted. There were a bunch of stations and activities that we could choose from after the awards. Talena enjoyed being there and her favourite station was the magic sand station and Annie said she loved Red Maple just because she loves field trips. I think that it was a great trip and we would all want to go again. Thanks to Ms. Kondo and Ms. da Silva for organizing the trip and encouraging us to participate in the Red Maple program.
Talent Show
By Annie
Magic tricks, singing, piano, ukulele and even dancing! On May 20th, Brock had their bi-annual talent show. There were about 13 acts in total. In the first act, Anik, Veronica and Bessie showed off their great
vocals by singing a Russian song they learned themselves. Emerson wowed the crowd with her guitar and singing skills! Sophia and Keirdan performed a guitar duet to Riptide and
were accompanied by Sam, Elisabeth and Juliana! Mason and Israt sang a beautiful version of Robin in the Rain while Mr. Cheong played the guitar. Kayla wowed everyone with her incredible piano skills. Mickiaella, Tayja, and Fynn entertained us with their singing. Jahliyah wowed us with her Cup Song performance.
Talena, Michelle and Sophia performed to Home by Phillip Phillips in a uku-lele trio! We also had more vocal performances such as Hollis and Makenna singing a duet to Safe and Sound. “I was nervous at first but once I started to sing I got into it,” said Hollis in grade 5. Hol-lis also mentioned that she was worried about singing too loud. “It didn’t take long to learn the
song,” said Makenna in grade 5. “I heard Makenna singing the song and so that’s how we got the idea to sing it for the talent show!” said Hollis. We also had the amazing Catarina dancing to “That Power.” She stated that she was very nervous and her styl-ists were her parents. Catarina taught herself the routine and it took about a month to learn. We had many wow factor acts by the courageous students of Brock. Congratulations!
Grade 7 Trip to
Brock University
By Sophia
On June 4th the
grade sevens went to
Brock University.
They left early in the morning and did
many fun activities during the day such
as leadership/cooperative games (to get ready to work to-
gether on the ropes), low ropes, high ropes and rock climb-
ing. Joyce thought that the best part was the ropes course.
“It was scary but very thrilling.” Brent's favor-
ite leadership game was the picture frame
game. “ We had to fit our whole group in a pic-
ture frame. It was challenging but very fun.”
The rock climbing was very hard for Annie.
“The rocks were very small so it was hard to
climb all the way to the top.” Vic thought that
it was worth the long drive to
Brock University. He said that
when he did the
forty foot rope
course it did not look
so high from the
ground but when he
got to the top, it was
very scary and sus-
penseful. When the grade sevens re-
turned from the trip they had many fun
memories of Brock University.
FDK Trip to the Gardiner Museum
By Le Rong
On June 2, the kindergarten clas-
ses went to the Gardiner Museum.
Everything in the museum is about
clay. The students got to make
their own sculptures and have fun
and experiment with the clay.
Solomon is in Ms. Christian’s
class and his favorite part was
getting to eat outside. He made a
penguin out of clay.
Angela and Arden both made birds in nests. Aliyah’s
favorite part was when they got to make their own sculp-
tures. She and Sierra made sculptures of owls with their
clay. At the end of the day they learned much more about
clay. Many thanks to Mr. Sprott who picked up the sculp-
tures after the museum was finished firing them in the
kiln so that they last
longer. Everyone is ex-
cited to take home their
sculptures. Thanks to the
parent volunteers who
went with the classes on
this trip!
FDK Trip to the Zoo
By Talena
On May 21st the kindergar-ten classes went to the zoo to look at the animals and explore life in the zoo. When they got there the classes split up into groups and went to see the different animals and go to different activities. They had a lot of parent volunteers to help make sure everyone had fun. The classes also
got to par-

I got to go on a mo-torcycle. It was su-per fun.

Puppet Shows
By Amir
The grade 4,5 and 6’s
went to the gym and
watched a puppet show
performance about addic-
tions to drugs and alcohol
and why you shouldn't do
it. The performers
worked for “Concerned
Kids” and taught the kids what could happen if
you ever got addicted to drugs and alcohol. The
grade 2-3 students learned about bullying and
why it’s hurtful. Special thanks to Mr. Tran
and Ms. Bettencourt for
organizing this show.
The students are happy
that they watched it.
They all said it was a
great experience and it
will help them make
better future decisions.
Folkfest
By:Michelle
On May 16th, the members of the Dance Club went to Folkfest in Scarborough. Folkfest is an event where different schools come and meet, learn new
dances and perform ones they already know. Ms. Yannopoulos and Mr. Crifo worked really hard with the dance team to learn many dances. All their hard work and practice really paid off. Fynn said
they danced different dances from around the world. Emma said “lots of schools were there and we all did a march.” I asked if they would like to go again and Makenna said she would like to go again because it was fun. “Yes, because we got to dance and I like dancing” said Fynn. “I would like to go again because it was fun and we got to stay up late” said Emma. I asked if they learned anything from the trip. Makenna re-alized that she “learned that if you mess up while doing a dance, it’s ok- you can jump back in.“ “I learned dances that I didn’t know existed”
said Fynn. Congratulations to Ms. Yannopoulos, Mr. Crifo, and all the members of the Dance Club. Thank you for representing Brock so well!
Grade 8 Graduation Events
By Amir
The grade 8’s are having their graduation ceremony on Wednesday, June 24th 2015 and because they are graduating they went on a fabulous Ottawa trip that Mr. Basanti and Mr. Tran organized for them. They stayed at a hotel called Marriott Hotel. Lots of them say it was a great experience staying there because it had great hospitality and served 5 star food. On their first day they went to a restaurant and had an Aborigi-nal dinner. On the second day they went to a muse-um, a market and also went to Parliament Hill and did a mock trial. On their third day in Ottawa they went to a war museum. Overall they had a great trip.
They also went to a baseball game on June 10 for graduation. Even though it was raining, they still had a good time. They made signs to take to the game. They will also be going to the Drake Hotel for a gradu-
ation lunch during the last week of school. We wish the grade 8s all the best as they get ready for high school.

Teacher Spotlight:
Ms. Dixon
By Tarrick
This year, Ms. Dixon taught music and French at Brock. We asked what she’d like to teach next. She said “I’m interested in teaching kindergarten French immersion, but I love teaching all grade levels, that’s why this year was so great because I got to see everyone from kindergarten all the way to grade 8.”
She likes teaching French because she gets “to do lots of fun activities and its great to give students the ability to speak another language that they can use in the future. It’s a useful skill that I hope our students at Brock can utilize for years to come.”
Music is fun for her because “singling, dancing, and making music makes me happy and I love to get
students excited about the arts and help develop their musical skill.”
Sadly, Ms. Dixon won’t be at Brock next year. We asked if she would like to come back and she said “Yes of course. I would love to come back to Brock. Everyone is wonderful and fantastic and it’s a great community.”
Thanks for everything you’ve done for us this year, Ms. Dixon! From music to French, to the awesome Winter Carnaval. We will miss you!
Teacher Spotlight: Mr. Cheong
By Michelle
This month’s
teacher spot-
light is Mr.
Cheong, who
teaches grade
1/2. He has
been a teacher
for 23 years
and has been
teaching at
Brock for 20
years. He’s met
lots and lots of
students over the years. Students like being
in Mr. Cheong’s class because he is nice
and funny. He said he likes interacting with
kids and he enjoys teaching new things! His
favorite subject to teach is math because
when he was younger he was good at it. Mr.
Cheong is a really special teacher and per-
son and we all like him a lot. We’re going to
miss you next year! We hope you come
back to visit!
Teacher Spotlight: Mr. Tran
By Amir Mr. Tran is the principal of Brock. He’s really nice, support-ive, and fair to the staff and students. We asked Mr. Tran how long he’s been at Brock.
“I have been a principal for 5 years at Brock and I love my experience.” He really enjoys “working with a wonderful Brock community that consists of par-ents, students, and staff.” Mr. Tran’s best experience has been “watching Brock grow over
the years, especially from a K-6 school to a K-8 school.”
He loves what he does because he has an opportunity to connect with all of the students, staff, and parents.
We thought we’d ask him what he would like to teach if he could teach a grade. “I would like to teach full day kindergar-ten because it would be a new experience. When I was a classroom teacher, FDK was not available.”
Being a principal is hard work. He says “the most challeng-ing part about being a principal is not having enough time in the day to do what I really need to because there’s a lot to do.”
Lastly, he says “I believe the key message is Brock is truly a collaborative and nurturing learning environment.” We think so too. Thanks for letting us interview you and for being a great principal, Mr. Tran!
Teacher Spotlight: Ms. da Silva
By Sophia
This month’s teach-
er spotlight is the
grade 7 teacher,
Ms. da Silva! Ms.
da Silva has been
teaching at Brock
for many years.
We asked her what she’s taught over the years. “I
started teaching junior kindergarten, then I taught
many other grades and grade 7 is one of my fa-
vorites. The students are always full of energy.”
Besides being an awesome teacher, she also
helps organize and run many events for Brock.
Some of her many talents include organizing tal-
ent shows, writing scripts for concerts, organizing
schedules, and giving advice and resources to
students and teachers. We wanted to know what
she thought of us, her class. “This year’s class has
been awesome and I wish them a great summer
and the best of luck for next year.” Thanks for
everything you do for Brock, Ms. da Silva!
Math Problems of the Month (Good Luck!)
By Paul
1) Grandpa: "My grandson is about as many days as my son is weeks, and my grandson is as many months as I am in years. My grandson, my son and I together are 120 years. Can you tell me my age in years?"
2) A rich merchant had collected many gold coins. He did not want anybody to know about them. One day, his wife asked, "How many gold coins do we have?" After pausing a moment, he replied, "Well! If I divide the coins into two unequal numbers, then 47 times the difference between the two numbers equals the difference between the squares of the two numbers." The wife looked puzzled. Can you help the merchant's wife by finding out how many gold coins they have?

Yoga Club
For the past
month or so, some
grade 7s have
been coming to
Intermediate Yo-
ga Club in the
library. They have been learning many poses
and flows, such as sun salutations, triangle
pose, warrior I, II, extended side angle, tree
pose, and lots of forward folds from Ashtanga
yoga. They have also been doing some core work
like bicycles. Even though some of the poses
are hard, all the members really try their best
and push through.
In a short time, they have all shown improve-
ment in their strength and flexibility. Ms. Kon-
do is really proud of their hard work and dedi-
cation. They keep coming back each week and
everyone has made great progress.
We hope to con-
tinue yoga next
year, and maybe
even extend it
to other grades.
Namaste!
Farewell and Happy Summer!
By Joyce
We have come to the last newsletter of the
2014-2015 school year! These newsletters
have been the grade 7’s way of communi-
cating with the school. We wrote about the
school’s adventures! Our school has gone
on many adventures and held many
events. At first, we were scared of the news-
letter because it held such responsibility.
However, we improved as time went on.
We approached the newsletters with mixed feelings; half of us were excited and the other
half, well...not so much (but that changed by the end). I think that by reading these newslet-
ters, students and families of Brock had the chance to see our writing (hopefully) improve.
Some of our writing went from bland and boring to detailed and exciting! From all of us in
grade 7, we would like to thank Ms. Kondo and Ms. da Silva for being patient with us, editing
our work when it wasn’t our best, and for organizing the time for us to write. We would also like
to thank all of the wonderful teachers at Brock. They allowed us to interview their students
when they were in the middle of a lesson. We would also like to thank Mr. Tran and Ms. Rita for
editing, printing and sending out the newsletters. Last but not least, thank you to the readers!
Thank you for reading since that was our motivation to keep writing. We hope you enjoyed
reading these bundles of love as much as we enjoyed writing them. Happy Summer! Enjoy the
sun and the summer vacation! See you in September! :)
Happy Graduation!
By Brent
The Grade 8’s and Senior Kindergartens are graduating this year. We’re very happy the Kindergartens are graduating. We are sad that the Grade 8’s are leaving, but we’re happy that they’re going into high school next year. The Kindergartens and the Grade 8’s have had a great year. The Grade 8’s said they have enjoyed this year at Brock and that they are excited for graduation.
The Kindergartens have grown a lot. They have also been practising what recess will be like next year. The Kindergartens are really excited they are going into Grade 1 next year- HOORAY! Finally, we would like to wish “a see you later” to the Grade 8’s and a “welcome to Grade 1” for the Kinder-gartens. All the best to you next year!
