The Mary Hochhausen Prize for Music and Braille Literacy was established in 2014 by the Hochhausen family to honour the memory of Mary Hochhausen. The Prize will celebrate her joy and love of music and professional performance on piano and Pipe (Lower case) organ; her family values; her commitment to education and to community service.

The Prize also recognizes Mary’s life of service to her community and affiliation with work for the blind in Canada and elsewhere.

From the inception of the World Braille Foundation in 2001, Mary maintained an active interest in the objectives and projects of the Foundation and was among its long-standing and loyal donors.

The World Braille Foundation acknowledges with appreciation the founding gift of $50,000 by the Hochhausen Family to endow this special Prize.

Two or more prizes of up to $2,000US each will be awarded annually to young blind women and men in Africa to further their education or career in the field of music.

What is most unique about this Prize is that it will be awarded in the spirit and function of Braille Literacy – a passion for music toward a goal of employment and economic independence.

Literacy is the key to opportunity, economic security and freedom, yet in most developing countries blind children receive minimal education. Lack of skilled teachers and limited access to Braille materials or equipment means that in many countries at least 95% of blind children are not in school today. For adults, Braille skills dramatically increase opportunities for employment but basics such as Braille paper or instruction are often not available. The World Braille Foundation delivers the gift of Braille literacy.
