Workshop Workshop1 2
Ultrasound Assisted Lubrication: Eliminating Failures by Combining PdM and PM Best Practices
Improving Maintenance Strategies and Asset Performance Management
Shon Isenhour CMRPDirector of Education and Work Execution Management
Doug Waetjen CMRP,
Vice President - Global Operations, UE Systems, Inc.
Most organizations have some type of Preventive Maintenance (PM) Program and use Condition Monitoring, at least at a low level. So, what is the problem? Why do failures continue to occur? Are there any tools or processes that need to be used to improve reliability? In this session, we will discuss the P-F Curve in depth and illustrate its importance in building PM, Predictive Maintenance (PdM), and Condition Monitoring Programs. A Failure Modes Driven Strategy should be a focus for any organization where failures are not acceptable on specific equipment. The starting point for this is knowing what failure modes need to be addressed and what needs to be done to ensure these failure modes do not begin for as long as possible. In order to accomplish this feat, one must also know the PdM technologies available to them and the failure modes they address. Airborne and structure-borne ultrasound have evolved into condition monitoring technologies that many would consider to be the cornerstone of an effective maintenance and reliability program. One application in particular is to utilize the technology for condition based lubrication, reducing lubrication-related failures in rotating equipment. The most common causes of bearing failures are related to lubrication: lack of lubrication or too much lubrication. Additionally, typical lubrication programs are based on timed intervals, usually meaning lubricant is applied whether or not the equipment needs to be greased. Ultrasound assisted lubrication helps take the guesswork out of how much lubricant to apply. Attendees will have the opportunity to try an ultrasonic test instrument and an ultrasonic grease caddy, seeing first-hand the benefits they can add to an existing PdM or Condition Monitoring Program. These tools will stretch your imagination to uses that are practical for identifying defects and the early identification of failure modes. This workshop will walk attendees through the process for implementing a structure-borne ultrasound program that can detect mechanical faults in rotating equipment and prevent failures due to either lack of lubrication or over lubrication. The benefits of fewer rotating equipment failures include reduced unscheduled downtime, maintenance costs, and motor repair costs. Information will also be presented on how airborne and structure-borne ultrasound is a perfect complement to other technologies such as vibration analysis and infrared thermography.
Multinational companies and large industrial plants struggle with Asset Performance Management and the deployment of effective maintenance strategies. While RCM is a proven method of defining the most appropriate maintenance strategy, maintenance and reliability engineers still struggle with the deployment of RCM logic. They also struggle with managing Asset Health, collecting the right data and executing a robust Failure Reporting and Defect Elimination Program.
Asset Performance Management is not complex when fully understood and put in simple terms.
This workshop will demystify the complexities and use practical case studies including some from local industries in the Middle East as examples to illustrate the process.
The course material is the result of almost two decades of consultation and successful implementation programs with leading local and international companies including Saudi Aramco which deploys this process worldwide.
The course provides a combination of theoretical concepts bedded in with a practical case study completed by the delegates either on paper or on a spreadsheet.
This course will deliver leading edge and practical thinking to the conference.

Work Management Overview for Executives Equipment Care Team Workshop
Larry Olson, CMRPCEO / PresidentNexus Global Business Solutions, Inc.
Work Management Overview for Executives is a one day course designed to give all participants a clear understanding of the critical importance of well planned and executed maintenance activities.
This course will give you tools that are vital to achieving maximum operational effectiveness. The course is based on industry best practices and introduces a seven step work management process for organizing, planning, scheduling, executing and completing effective maintenance.
The course places Special emphasis on clearly identifying and understanding the importance of Planning and Scheduling roles. Participants will be shown an innovative methodology to break up the plant system and structure it into zones, which will result in greater maintenance efficiency.
Nexus Global Business Solutions will conduct a one day macro level ECT workshop during the 2012 MaintCon. Nexus will guide the attendees through a step by step process on the formation and training of an Equipment Care Team (ECT) workshop. ECT’s are cross-functional groups made up of the organizations resource support team members. They meet according to a team developed Terms of Reference (ToR) until all equipment issues are resolved and ownership for sustainability is agreed. The concept of CLAIR an element of Lean/5s will be used during the workshop. CLAIR stands for Cleaning, Lubricating, Adjusting, Inspecting, and Repair, pertaining to specific issues related to ECT workshop.
This MaintCon workshop (customized to meet the 1day workshop) will bring practical examples into the workshop along with demonstrations of actual hands-on equipment session, the concepts of Operational Excellence in relationship to Integrity and Process Safety Management will be explained. This workshop will be a mini macro session to an actual in plant workshop and can be customized to best suit the need of each facility and organizational goals. The workshop will enable attendees to begin the process of identifying and resolving equipment-related issues in their plant for their specific equipment.
In addition to their new skills, participants leave the course with an Equipment Care Manual.

About Bahrain
The Kingdom of Bahrain is an archipelago of low lying islands located in the Arabian Gulf off the Eastern shore of Saudi Arabia. Frequently called the Pearl of the Arabian Gulf, Bahrain has a history of civilizations that date back more than 5,000 years. Bahrain is the ancient site of the immortal land of Dilmun, and was the religious centre to Sumerians, Babylonians and Assyrians, as proven by many archaeological excavations. Many legends surround the land – the multitude of ancient burial grounds here gave rise to the title “Isle of Eternity,” before modern archaeology explained them as a legacy of Dilmun times; centuries upon centuries of human habitation packed into one compact site. From the mists of time to a vibrant present Bahrain thrives under a stable and prosperous government. Today, the modern Arabic name “Bah-rain” still retains this meaning – “two waters”, it’s landscape is a tapestry of marvelous old sites and colorful traditional markets dotted between modern skyscrapers and buildings. While relatively small in population, land area and resources, Bahrain has achieved a high level of social and economic development over a short period of time.
