Calf Mortality Control ProgramInstitute of Dairy Sciences, UAF

In Pakistan, more than 50% calves die prior to 2 months age. It is mainly due to mis-management. Reduction in calf mortality is possible by feeding colostrum within an hour after birth, navel cord care, feeding according to requirement, control of parasitism and use of injection Butalex at the age of 10 days.

Calf suffer with omphalitis

Training about navel cord care In Pakistan, low livestock productivity is mainly due to underfeeding. Mott grass is a multicut fodder having optimum growth and production in May –June. However, quality fodder availability is only possible if cutting stage is 45-60 days. For making quality mott grass silage, use molasses @3% fodder dry matter. Silage feeding can ensure regular and uniform supply of nutrients resulting to enhance productivity.

Ber (Zizyphus mauritina Lamk) has 45 genera and 550 species and is widely distributed in sub-tropical and tropical climates of world. Ber is also mentioned in Quraan as a blessed fruit. Ber fruit is rich source of vitamin-A, B and C; vitamin C contents are higher than oranges. It contains more phosphorus, protein, calcium and carotene than apple. The fruits is high in calorific values and is easily digestible, laxative and help lower the cholesterol level, blood pressure and is useful against cancer, liver diseases and HIV. Because of its tolerance against salinity and drought, it can grow better in poor degraded lands thus provides provides food security in those areas. In Punjab total marginal land is 6.67 million hectare, which is approximately 3% of the total cultivated land. Most of the agronomic and horticultural crops cannot be grown successfully in marginal areas, whereas Ber orchards can be established successfully on such land. This fast growing tree starts producing fruit within two to three years. High density plantation (18 x 18 feet or 15 x 20 feet) is recommended for the establishment of Ber orchards. Height of the plants is maintained at 6 or 4 feet by annual pruning. In this way the number of plants per unit are more and management practices are easy. This technology provides the opportunity to grow the good Ber cultivars in marginal lands for higher returns. Pruning in the months of fodder shortage can provide fodder for goats and sheep. Fruits are used as fresh fruit and different by products such as jams and pickles are prepared to get the more income. Following cultivars are available at Institute of Horticultural Sciences, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, Pakistan.

SOLARDEHYDRATORDepartment of Physics

Food drying is an excellent solar energy application since food drying primarily requires heat, and solar radiation is easily converted to heat. A clear or translucent glazing allows sunlight to enter an enclosed chamber where it is converted to heat when it strikes a dark interior surface. Air flow is typically achieved with natural convection (warm air rises). Temperature is controlled by air flow using adjustable venting.

Factors affecting theSolar Dehydrationl Temperaturel Passive Air Flowl ‘Angle of Incidence’l Materialsl Insulation

TEMPERATURE IN SOLAR DEHYDRATORMost foods are dehydrated at 130°F(54°C) temperatures of 130°F, or 54°C, although meat should be dehydrated at a higher temperature of 155°F (68°C), or preheated to those temperature levels, to guard against pathogens that may be in the meat.

SOLAR OVEN

l A reflecting mirror of polished glass, metal or metalized film concentrates sunlight on a small cooking area.

l A black or low reflectivity surface on a food container or the inside of a solar cooker improves the effectiveness of reflecting light into heat.

l Light absorption converts the sun's visible light into heat.

l A plastic bag or tightly sealed glass cover traps the hot air inside the oven.

l Glass transmits visible light but blocks infrared thermal radiation from escaping. This amplifies the heat trapping effect.

Upto 300° F (150° C) is suitable for cooking. Food containing larger quantities of moisture cannot get much hotter than 212° F (100° C) so it is not necessary to cook at higher temperatures.

Mastitis Diagnostic Kitand Mastitis VaccineDepartment of Clinical Medicine & Surgery

l At least 20% cows and buffaloes in Pakistan produce unwholesome milk because of mastitis (inflammation or swelling of udder). Most of the diseased animals are affected by sub-clinical or hidden form of mastitis

l Milk of mastitis affected animal contains higher than normal number (200,000/ml) of white blood cells (pus cells).

l Increased number of white blood cells in milk can be detected by mixing milk with 3% solution of Surf Excel (Muhammad et al., 2010, Tropical Animal Health and Production, 42: 457-464) in equal proportion (Surf Field Mastitis Test; SFMT).

l To control the scourge of mastitis, several candidate mastitis vaccines investigated at University of Agriculture, Faisalabad.

l The most promising results in mastitis control obtained with a vaccine incorporating a biofilm producing local isolate of Staphylococcus aureus.

l Both SFMTkit and mastitis vaccine (MastipepTM) now commercially available as an output of an agreement inked between Business Incubation Center, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad and UM Enterprises, Karachi.

SFMT recognized as a success story inSAARC coubtries

o Researchers at the Department of Clinical Medicine and Surgery ---- blazed a trail in demonstrating a far too superior wound healing effect of Shingraf than that of Pyodine® in a rabbit mode

o Shingraf---- may potentially be developed into a commercially available product for use in animal and human patients.

o There is no gainsaying that a considerable research work (e.g. mercury levels in the body of the treated animals in the wake of application of Shingraf, the level of hydroxyproline as a wound healing marker in tissue samples collected from the wounds) ----- yet to be undertaken

DMSO-IODIZED OIL

Test formulation (DMSO-iodized oil)

Formulated for the treatment of:

Ÿ Mastitis (swelling of udder)…….….the

most common reason for use of

antibiotics in dairy animals.

Ÿ The downside of use of

antibiotics……....emergence of

antibiotic resistance in bacteria and

antibiotics residues in milk and meat of

treated animals. An alternative to

antibiotics is therefore desperately

needed.

Ÿ A non-antibiotic mastitis treatment

formulation (currently under trial)

containing Tri-sodium citrate, Vitamin

C, wheat flour and water (sufficient to

make a dough ball) may swing the pH of

mastitic milk to acidic

and thus cure mastitis by

stopping the

multiplication of

mastitis pathogens.

A NON-ANTIBIOTICMASTITIS TREATMENT FORMULATION

A buffalo being treated with test formulation

A dough ball containingabove ingredients

A cow being treated with DMSO-iodized oil

Ÿ Heat-intolerance syndrome (panting) after recovery from Foot-and-mouth disease in cattle and buffaloes.

Ÿ Summer season hyperthermia of exotic and crossbred dairy cattle.

Ÿ Pyrexia of unknown origin (PUO) refractory to antibiotics and NSAIDs

Ÿ Iodine deficiency in livestock Ÿ Mastitis with fibrosis Ÿ Actinomycosis/actinobacillosisŸ in cattle and buffaloes.
