Transmission Line Protection

NR’s PCS-900 series fast and reliable protection & control devices are designed for applications in HVAC transmission lines with voltage levels up to 1000kV, including directional comparison relay, distance relay, current differential relay, stub differential relay, and voltage relay with transfer trip supervision. The PCS series products adopt advanced UAPC multi-processor platform which is fully complied with IEC 61850 station bus & GOOSE process bus and supports both traditional electro-magnetic CT/VT and electronic CT/VT.

- Distance Protection

The PCS-902 numerical line distance protection provides full-scheme protection functions hosted on patented UAPC platform. It introduces an extensive functional library, programmable logic and configurable I/O intended for applications in overhead lines and underground cables of all voltage levels, including series compensated lines, double-circuit lines, heavily loaded lines, weak infeed (WI), short lines and extremely long lines. An extra communication port is optional to provide dual protection channels for three-terminal application and redundant application.

- Current Differential Protection

The PCS-931 current differential protection integrates phase-segregated current differential protection, zero sequence current differential protection, stepped distance protection, current protection and voltage protection with single and/or three pole tripping and auto-reclosing. The PCS-931 is suitable for overhead lines and underground cables of all voltage levels, including series compensated lines, double-circuit lines, three-terminal lines, heavily loaded lines, weak infeed (WI), short lines and extremely long lines. An extra communication port is optional to provide dual protection channels for three-terminal application and redundant application.

Capacitor Protection

NR's RCS-9631 relay can provide simplified settings for shunt capacitor banks, reactors, and circuit breakers in one-and-a-half breaker and ring breaker applications. It provides sensitive voltage and current unbalance protection with drift auto adjustment.

Reactor Protection

NR's numerical reactor protection relay RCS-917 is suitable for the protection of UHV shunt reactors by offering mechanical protection and electrical protection such as percentage differential protection, DPFC differential protection and overcurrent protection.

The RCS-9647 reactor management relay is an integrated current measuring multi-function relay designed to be used for the protection of shunt reactors at low voltage side of transformer.

Transformer Protection

The PCS-978 is a numerical transformer protection hosted on advanced UAPC multi-processor platform for various transformer applications, including two-winding transformers, three-winding transformers, auto-transformers and split-phase transformers.

The device introduces current differential element and restricted earth fault element as main protection for transformers, and integrates over-excitation protection, overcurrent protection, voltage protection, frequency protection and mechanical protection as backup protection. Up to six three-phase current inputs are available in the current differential protection. The extensive functional library, programmable logic and configurable I/O are integrated to meet flexible applications. The unique current differential protection includes the unrestraint current differential element, percentage current differential element and DPFC differential element.

Busbar Protection

The PCS-915 comprehensive and scalable busbar protections are hosted on advanced UAPC multi-processor platform, providing busbar protection and breaker failure protection for single busbar, double busbar, double busbar with or without transfer bus, double busbar with bus sections and one-and-a-half breaker application, etc.

The device provides fast and secure low impedance busbar protection with sub-cycle tripping time. Check zone and discrimination zone of differential protection are available in the PCS-915 as a choice. It incorporates advanced and patented features to improve its sensitivity and security, such as breaker failure protection for all bays including bus coupler and bus section, innovative DPFC (Deviation Power Frequency Component) current differential protection and unique CT saturation detection method.

The PCS-915 adopts scalable and expandable architecture to protect up to 36 bays. The scheme is composed of one Master Unit(MU) and several Slave Units(SU) which are connected through fiber optic communication. The PCS-915 is fully compatible with IEC-61850 station bus & GOOSE bus and supporting both traditional electro-magnetic CT/VT and electronic CT/VT.

Circuit Breaker Protection

To enhance the operation of circuit breakers in a substation, NR offers complete breaker failure protection RCS-921 and RCS-923. The RCS-921 breaker failure relay with auto-reclosing function is designed to be used for the protection of circuit breakers in one-and-a-half breaker and ring breaker applications. The RCS-923 breaker failure protection with auto-reclosing and overcurrent protection functions can be used to protect circuit breaker, bus coupler or bus section. It can initiate breaker failure protection or directly trip the adjacent breakers.

Feeder Protection & Control

NR offers PCS/RCS-9600 series intelligent protection, control and monitoring devices to enhance power distribution capability. It provides complete protection and management functions for feeders used on utility, industrial and commercial electrical systems to achieve higher work efficient.

- Directional Overcurrent Protection

The PCS-9611 directional overcurrent protection provides protection, control, monitoring and measurement of distribution feeders, transformers and transmission lines. It can also be used as interlocking overcurrent (ILOC) protection for distribution busbars.

- Overcurrent Protection

The PCS-9691E is a numerical relay with overcurrent protection and auto-reclosing designed for the selective short-circuit protection, control and monitoring of feeders, capacitor banks, reactors or the motors etc. It is suitable for directly-grounded, impedance-grounded, Peterson-coil-grounded or ungrounded system.

HVDC Control & Protection

The self-developed PCS-9500 provides complete control and protection solutions for all engineering needs of HVDC transmission projects. It is designed for used in long-distance UHVDC transmission up to ±800kV and back-to-back converter station of all voltage levels.

Protection & Control of FACTS

The Flexible AC Transmission System(FACTS) is a power electronics-based system meant to enhance power flow control and increase power transfer capability of the network. NR’s PCS-9500 series VSC-HVDC products are designed for protection and control of FACTS using voltage sourced converters (VSC) technology. It can be applied to two-level converters, three-level converters and modular multi-level converters (MMC).

System Protection Scheme (SPS)

NR's provides system protection scheme(SPS) to save the system from a blackout which may appear after the clearance of a severe disturbance in a stressed operation situation or after an extreme load growth.

- Power Stability Control System (PSCS )

NR's unique Power Stability Control System(PSCS) is used to implement load-shedding and generator shutting-down to guarantee the stability of power grids and effectively avoid severe large area outage. It takes actions on cascading stage as early as possible to reduce the loss of load.

- RCS-992 Stability Controller

The RCS-992 stability controller is composed of one Master Unit(MU) and up to 6 Slave Units(SU). Communications between master unit and slave units are via dedicated point-to-point optic fibers using IEC60870-5-103 or IEC61850 communication protocol. Communications between stability controllers can be realized by dedicated optic fibers or SDH networks.

- RCS-993 Out-of-Step Relay

The out-of-step relay RCS-993 can effectively prevent system collapse by tripping the circuit breakers to separate the power system into several smaller islands, shutting down generators, shedding loads and/or starting synchronizer to prepare for the system synchronism after system islanding.

- RCS-994 Frequency & Voltage Relay

The RCS-994 Frequency & Voltage Relay can provide emergency voltage and frequency control by starting up or shutting down generators to balance the generations and loads.

NR provides protection and control solutions for power plant with unit capacity up to 1000MW, covering electrical protection for generators and auxiliary power, mechanism protection for transformers and thermal control for rotors.

Generator-Transformer Unit Protection

- Generator-Transformer Unit Protection

The PCS/RCS-985A/B/C microprocessor based generator-transformer unit protection provides comprehensive protection, control and monitoring for small to large generators, generator-transformer units with capacity up to 1000MW, main transformers, auxiliary transformers, excitation transformers and exciters. It integrates innovative patented technologies, including stator inter-turn fault protection, stator ground protection, rotor ground protection and loss of excitation protection.

For a large scale generator-transformer unit, two sets of PCS/RCS-985A/B/C can be used to duplicate main protection, abnormal operation condition protection and backup protection. Operating circuits are installed on a separated panel.

- Transformer Auxiliary Relay

The PCS-974 transformer auxiliary relay provides mechanical protection, pole disagreement protection and breaker failure initiation for transformers. Mechanical signal can be configured as thermal, gas, oil temperature, winding temperature, pressure, oil level and so on.

Figure 4 shows the typical protection configuration of PCS/RCS-985A/BC. This typical application consists of three protection panels. panel A and panel B comprise one set of PCS/RCS-985A/B/C each, and these two protection devices uses different CT groups respectively. Panel C is composed of RCS-974 Transformer Auxiliary Relay. This protection scheme is also applicable when the exciter is replaced by an excitation transformer.

Generator Protection

The PCS/RCS-985G is a generator protection designed for the protection of sophisticated generators, including turbo-generator, hydro-generators, gas turbine generators and pumped-storage generators. It integrates protection, control and monitoring functions in one package, such as differential protection, distance protection, mechanical protection, circuit breaker failure initiation and metering.

Figure 5 shows the typical protection configuration of PCS/RCS-985G. Panels A and panel B comprise of one set of PCS/RCS-985G each, and these two protection devices use different CT groups respectively.

One set of RCS-974AG is installed in Panel C to provide mechanical protection of generator and exciting transformer. Pole disagreement protection, circuit breaker failure initiation and circuit breaker operation relay set are optional based on customers' requests.

Protection for Generating Station

NR offers PCS/RCS-900 series high integrated protection and control devices to generating station in power plant to maintain the best quality of service available and communication capabilities.

Protection for Auxiliary Power

The PCS/RCS-9600 series is an object-oriented product designed for auxiliary power system with capacity up to 1000MW. It is available along with a wide integration of protection, measurement, monitoring and control functions. It adopts GPS time-synchronization which is compatible with second pulse, minute pulse and IRIG-B.

The protection module is independent of other modules both in hardware and software. Therefore, the protection function does not rely on the communication and can operate normally even when the communication link is cut-off.

Motor Control

The PCS-9690 series digital protection and control devices are designed for PCC and MCC system from 380V to 600V (phase to phase), including protection, control, monitoring and communication. This series can be used as the protection and control for motors, feeders, bus sections and circuit breakers. The PCS-9691 is used in the power control center of a low voltage auxiliary power system, while PCS-9692 is applied to the motor control centre. The PCS-9690 series is reliable and easy for maintenance. It is flexible to choose software and hardware of the device based on customers’ requirements.

Metals and Mining

NR's RCS-9600CN series products are designed for applications in industrial field. It highly integrates protection, control and monitoring functions in one rack, providing reliable safeguarding for power systems in industrial system. Communications between protection rooms and control rooms are realized by industrial fieldbus or Ethernet network.

The PCS-9691E is a numerical relay with overcurrent protection and auto-reclosing functions. It can provide fast and selective short-circuit protection, control and monitoring

for feeders, capacitor banks, reactors and motors in 380V power system of industrial enterprises.

The PCS-9655 Fast Transfer Device provides optimum safeguarding of energy supply and stable system operation. The fast transfer device ensures the continued supply to the consumer through automatic transferring to a stand-by feeder to avoid expensive stoppage time.

Oil and Petrochemical

NR’s highly reliable, economical and flexible solutions are suitable for severe conditions of oil and petrochemical industries, and are able to integrate into any existing systems.

The RCS-9600CS series products provide protection, control and monitoring of expensive equipments and increase the reliability of primary instruments. It also integrates automation functions such as disturbance fault recording, to increase the reliability and safety of control and monitoring system.

Transportation

- Electrified Railway

NR’s PCS-9680 series devices feature the integration of protection, monitoring and disturbance recording functions in one rack, providing safeguard and guarantee of economical operation for the entire electrified railway system.

The PCS-9680 series covers transformer protection, feeder protection, capacitor protection and automatic transfer device. It introduces harmonics blocking and self-adapting harmonics restraint functions to solve the impact and harmonics caused by loads in electric traction feeding system.
