At SPD designers are being called on to envision progressivetransportation concepts that t a uture scenario where carsare no more the unrivaled player. Alongside micromobilitysolutions or people mover systems that respond to thechallenge o the new megacities and their ast-growingeconomies, todays car design paradigm can also be broughtinto question in the urge to better interpret new socialhabits and environmental issues.

CHARACTERISTICS AND AIMSThe Master programme embraces theentire design development processthrough research into new experiential

concepts, the redenition o architec-tural solutions and by moving orwardwith new criteria or comort and e-ciency. Parallel to the technical training, studio projects are organized in collab-oration with major car companies. Inparticular SPD has signed a long-termeducational partnership with Volkswa-gen Group Design involving the par-ticipation o designers rom the variousbrands - rom Audi to Lamborghini- into the teaching activities. Ater theinitial exploration, students move or-ward into design concepts and their

renement up to both physical anddigital modelling. Its a long processthat demands a high level o personalcommitment and fexibility, organiza-tional and time management skills aswell as a strong attitude or teamwork.Transportation designers thus acquireconstant stimuli or innovation in termso both orm language and unction, allied with the understanding o engi-neering and production processes.

COURSE DURATION The Course lastsor one academic year (October toNovember). The nal exam consists othe presentation o a personal disserta-tion (thesis project) is arranged withinDecember. Full time commitment isrequired including mandatory class at-tendance, preparation o courseworkand individual study.

ENTRY Upon selection based on the

portolio review and on a personal as-sessment, the Master admits graduatesin Transportation or Car Design, Vehi-cle Engineering and their equivalents,

candidates with a degree in IndustrialDesign or other discipline who havegained signicant proessional expe-rience in the specic eld. Students

having successully attended the OneYear Course in Car Design Tools maybe accepted subject to the evaluationo the Master Admission Committee. For urther inormation please contactthe Academic Oce:[email protected] +39 02 21597590.

PROGRAMME OUTLINE*Studio practiceThis area identies a series o project-oriented courses arranged accordingto varying duration and a didactic ap-

proach that run over the entire year.Participants are tasked with complexthemes closely related to emergingissues in the current design scene. In-tensive workshops are intended tostimulate creative thinking while ex-tensive laboratories round o sounderproessional skills. Didactic activities willcover all the phases in the design proc-ess, rom the concept idea to designrenement, modelling and presenta-tion. Participants can benet rom aproessional oriented educational expe-

rience thanks to the close collaborationwith leading industrial partners and inparticular with the Volkswagen group.During regular class critique activitiesand interim reviews with external au-ditors, students can take advantageo the guidance o renowned design-ers working in the various studios othe world largest group and acultymembers who have been chosen romamong the best proessionals in the au-tomotive eld. Working both in smalldesign teams and individually, studentswill have the chance to enhance theirrelational skills and team work attitude, which is crucial in the proession due tothe complex and highly structured or-ganization o the businesses in the eld.

Design cultureTheoretical and practical classes are in-tended to support the students idea-tion process and boost their culturaland methodological background ac-cording to a proessional orientation.Thematic courses are provided to osterthe comprehension o the history and

the contemporary culture o transpor-tation design. The principles o auto-motive marketing will be investigatedaccording to a user-centered approach.

In a collaborative way classes will tendtoward the denition o the brand strat-egies and market trends, the interpre-tation o the values o each brand by

recognizing the elements that dene itsidentity. The denition o uture trendsin transport design will start rom theanalysis o the target user, his needs, and habits.Research topics are selected accordingto a global perspective that takes intoconsideration the leading names in theautomotive eld in relation with todaysdesign and construction techniques, inaddition to attention on the new possi-bilities introduced by ast growing mar-kets emerging in the automotive scene. The new rontiers o the integration

among man-transport-urban inrastruc-ture-inormation and communicationnetworks will be deeply investigated.Inact it is to be noted that this chang-ing landscape is marking a dramaticevolution in the proessional role o thetransportation designer. A specic ocusis devoted to the Colour and Trim areaas a complementary skill or the youngdesigners. A practical methodology ap-plied to colours, materials and nishingis presented to support both the re-search and the design phase. The course

also covers the study o trends and thecreation o new sensorial palettes thatare able to infuence consumer demandrelying on a strong emotional identity. The main design assignments o theyear will be completed with a detailedcolour and trim study relevant to bothcar exterior and interior.Tools and techniques

SPD is recognized as an educational institutionsby Regione Lombardia. The Masters coursesoered by SPD are organized in collaborationwith IULM University and award academiccredits under the ECTS system. Please checkwith the Student Inormation Oce or ur-

The didactic area comprises advancedtraining or dierent tools and tech-niques, starting rom renement o thestudents graphic abilities up to digital

modelling and production skills accord-ing to the quality standard set by theindustry. The programmes will initially ocus oncolour sketching and digital renderingtechniques as the correct visualizationo the concept is made rst by hand, beore moving on to the CAD phase, which is notoriously more costly interms o time. Classes will then concen-trate on digital rendering techniques inorder to achieve a higher photorealisticlevel o representation.Moving to the 3D modelling phase, it is

noted that today advanced digital mod-elling is a undamental tool or a youngdesigner in the automotive eld. There-ore it is important to understand thespecic attitude with which designersshould approach this technology andthe benets it delivers to them duringthe design process. The main goal o thecourse is enabling the students to getamiliar with the technical understand-ing o three-dimensional modelling, acquire a sound construction methodol-ogy and gain a designers sensitivity to-

ward digital suracing and detailing. AnAlias model is also requested as a validsupport at the beginning o a clay mod-elling process or or rapid prototypingpurposes. Towards the end o the proc-ess physical modelling is a key phase toveriy volumes, proportions and stylingsolutions. The educational process em-phasizes the benets o clay modellingas it allows a totally reversible processo addition and subtraction. Duringthe work, students will be presented avariety o clay modelling tips through alearn-by-doing process. The entire train-ing programme requires constant indi-vidual commitment on a daily base.

SPD Scuola Politecnica di Design is the rst postgraduate

school or design disciplines in Italy, ounded in Milan

in 1954. Today SPD is an international laboratory

or exchanging experiences, making contact with companies

    and proessionals, or developing projects

by keeping a balance between unction and expression,

and a solid orientation towards production

and experimentation. The work developed every year

and the young proessionals rom a strongly international

background that the school is able to oer

to the market are also testimony to this incredibly rewarding

    creative dialogue with companies, manuacturers

and the various actors along the design chain.
