Between the 11th and 12th of January

2011, seven cities in the mountainous

region of Rio de Janeiro were affected by

extreme weather conditions that led to

landslides and floods . The accumulated

rainfall in 24 hours was more than expected

for the entire month. As a result, over 30

thousand people became homeless and

public utilities such as electricity, running

water and phone lines were affected.

A landslide is a wide range of ground

movements, such as rockfalls, deep failure

of slopes and debris flows. Landslides in the

state of Rio de Janeiro are annual events

and historically causes of disasters and

fatalities. There are different types of

landslides according to their characteristics

why did t hey happen?

The occurrence of such disasters is linked

to the intense rainy season that takes place

every summer in Brazil, the geological

features of the area and the occupation of

slopes. Together, these three factors

increase the chance of major accidents.

For example, Nova Friburgo, one of most

affected cities, has an average accumulated

rainfall of 201mm during January.

This brochure provides information about

the landslides and floods that happened in

the state of Rio de Janeiro 2011. However,

there are recommendations on how to

prevent these disasters that can also be

applied in other regions.

However in 24 hours between the 11th and

12th the accumulated rainfall reached

271,5mm. This excessive amount of water

acted as lubricant in the geological fracture

that controls many drainages in the area,

thus the soil above these fractured rocks

was saturated with water and became

unstable. As a result, several constructions

that were near the slopes were destroyed by

the landslides and the floods.

The Civil Defense of Rio de Janeiro is

installing rain warning sirens at critical

areas in three of the seven cities affected

by floods and landslides: Nova Friburgo,

Teresópolis and Petrópolis. The aim of

this project is to prepare the

neighborhoods located near hazardous

areas and avoid tragedies like the one

that killed more than 900 people in

January 2011.

house who are not leaving in risky areas or

to the closest assembly points

- Do not cut trees or remove vegetation from

slopes without consulting the responsible

authorities

- Do not construct in illegal areas. You can lose

your house and expose your family to risk

- Do not make illegal cuts in slopes, they are

one of the biggest landslide causes
