Pioneering minerals and metals development in CanadaRio Tinto is developing minerals and metals in Canada sustainably, responsibly, and safely. By pioneering the use of innovative technology, we produce the materials essential for human progress.

Low carbon aluminiumRio Tinto Aluminium’s Canadian energy portfolio is 100 percent carbon free. It is the cleanest in the industry and mainly from self-generated hydropower facilities. Because of this, and our world-class AP technology, in Canada we produce some of the lowest carbon footprint aluminium in the world, providing the materials essential to transition to a low-carbon future.

Reducing our waste at RTFTRio Tinto Fer et Titaine (RTFT) has partnered with Agro-100, an agriculture research company, with the objective of giving a second life to the by-products produced by the sulphur dioxide capture system at the metallurgical complex in Sorel-Tracey.

Together with Agro-100, we are looking to recycle our by-products so that they can be used as nutrient additives in agriculture. Our goal is to reduce our waste and find innovative uses for the materials we produce.

Windpower in DiavikThe Diavik Diamond Mine operates one of the largest hybrid wind-diesel power facilities at a remote mine site in the world. Since coming on line in 2012, the windfarm has offset Diavik’s diesel use by over 26 million litres and reduced the overall GHG emissions by 72 thousand tonnes.

Windpower at the Diavik Mine, Northwest Territories

Investing in the futureRio Tinto officially opened its new $450M A21 pipe at Diavik Diamond Mine, providing an important source of diamond supply for Diavik and ensuring the continuation of existing production levels until closure. Diavik’s innovative design and engineering technology was used to construct the A21 dike, which is located just offshore of Lac de Gras in the Northwest Territories.

2018 marked the opening of IOC’s Wabush 3 mining project in Labrador West. This $79M investment will increase ore output by about five million tonnes per year and extend the life of the mine by 12 years.

Leaders in responsible aluminium production

Partnering with NespressoIn a world first, Rio Tinto and Nespresso have partnered to produce coffee pods that will be made with responsibly sourced aluminium, produced by Rio Tinto. Our two companies will work together to fulfil a commitment of sourcing 100 per cent sustainable aluminium by 2020, ensuring Nespresso coffee capsules are packaged with responsibly produced material.

Aluminium plays a very important role for us and our promise to the customer is that they’re always going to have a sustainably produced, high quality product. Rio Tinto was a very early adopter of the concept of responsible aluminium, and we’re very proud to be working closely with them, together, as part of the ASI.

Can aluminium production really be emissions free?Yes. It is called Elysis. In 2018, Rio Tinto, in partnership with Alcoa, Apple and the governments of Canada and Quebec, announced the world’s first carbon-free aluminium smelting process. The Elysis joint venture will develop and commercialize inert anode technology, the most significant innovation in the aluminium industry in more than a century. The revolutionary process enables the elimination of all GHG emissions from smelting, producing an oxygen by-product. It also reduces operating costs and increases productivity. It is planned that the technology will be able to be installed at new facilities or retrofitted to existing smelters.

Each day brings something different. One day I’m helping to plan a largescale event, the next day I’m out in the plant doing video work and meeting with employees, then the next day, I might be attending meetings with the company’s stakeholders. The Kitimat team is a diverse group who love their jobs and I find myself able to learn so much from such a passionate group.

Tłı̨chǫ Įmbè ProgramRio Tinto is partnering with the Tłı̨chǫ Government on the Įmbè program that connects youth and elders in an intensive cultural learning program. As a part of this program, members of Diavik’s environment team organized water and sediment sampling workshops, showcasing the various careers and opportunities in mining.

Pathways to educationRio Tinto pledged $3.5M between 2017 and 2020 to help give Quebec students from low-income communities the tools and life skills to graduate from high school. Pathways serves close to 1000 students in Quebec.

Through Pathways, Rio Tinto supports the creation of PASS, a unique program developed in partnership with the Innu community of Mashteuiatsh, Quebec. The only program of its kind with an Indigenous community in Canada, PASS provides homework support and culturally relevant afterschool activities to First Nations youth living on reserve. We are also a proud supporter of the Breakfast Club of Canada, helping to provide a healthy breakfast to more than 1200 students in 14 schools across northern British Columbia and Quebec.

Traditional knowledge panel in DiavikThe Traditional Knowledge Panel operating in Diavik brings together Indigenous elders and youth selected by their community to engage in environmental management and monitoring, most notably as it relates to closure planning for the mine. The Traditional Knowledge Panel applies their knowledge of historical caribou migrations and behaviour, water quality and flow patterns, vegetation and the interaction of all aspects of the environment to identify concepts, values, understandings, and complexities to be considered for closure options across the site.

Using a “cleaning up as it goes” model, Diavik is using knowledge gained through the Traditional Knowledge Panel and community consultation, to prepare the mine site for eventual closure. All Rio Tinto businesses must plan for closure from the earliest stages of project development. The planning is intended to minimize financial, social and environmental risks when the operation eventually closes and optimize social, economic and cultural opportunities for the host community.

White Sturgeon Conservation ProgramRio Tinto, in partnership with the District of Vanderhoof, BC Freshwater Fisheries, and the Governments of British Columbia and Canada operate the Nechako White Sturgeon Hatchery. The annual Nechako White Sturgeon Release Day is a demonstration of Rio Tinto’s commitment to protecting this endangered species.

Rio Tinto supports student researchRio Tinto is partnering with the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) to support students and grow the capacity for education and research in the region through a $450,000 investment that will focus on research and analysis of the socio-economic state within the Nechako Watershed region. The investment will also be used to support common interest areas of Rio Tinto and UNBC like the environment and experiential learning opportunities for UNBC students.

Watershed management in SaguenayThe safe management of Rio Tinto’s hydroelectric facilities in Quebec is critically important to the business. Rio Tinto pioneered the creation of flood monitoring technology and we can now precisely anticipate which areas of the community will be impacted by potential flood events. The system has already been tested. When record levels of rainfall lead to significant flooding in the Saguenay – Lac-Saint-Jean region, our flood prediction technology and our close partnership with the community helped to protect the public and prevent further damage.

Sustainable development and safety

Rio Tinto’s contribution to sustainable developmentSustainable development is a fundamental aspect of our everyday activities, and across the entire lifecycle of our projects and operations. By listening carefully to the goals and concerns of our stakeholders and communities, and consistently aiming to align their needs and our own, we work to develop more responsible ways to find, mine, and process the minerals and metals to improve modern life. Throughout this process, safety remains at the forefront of everything we do.

Train carrying ore pellets, Labrador City, Newfoundland and Labrador

tl’ghus LaunchRio Tinto celebrated the launch of the tl’uglus tunnel boring machine, a major milestone towards completing the Kemano Second Tunnel Project.

The 1300 tonne machine was named by the Cheslatta Carrier Nation and will dig 7.6 kilometres of tunnel as part of a CAD $600 Million project to enhance the long-term security of a clean power supply for the BC Works aluminium smelter in Kitimat, BC.

Employee Safety at IOCThe Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC) launched an employee safety policy called Link to Gate, which ensured that access to sites would be linked to the successful completion of five mandatory safety courses. For employees with expired or missing training, site access would be denied until the required training courses were completed. IOC is pleased to report that on day one of the new policy, over 99% of employees were compliant across two sites in Labrador City and Sept-Iles. The Link to Gate policy will help ensure our sites remain safer for all employees, contractors and visitors.
