NWFP is exceptionally rich in terms of multitudes of tourist attraction. The essence of
this attraction is visible from the remarkable natural picturesque comprising beautiful
rivers, splendid ater falls, spell!bound lakes mostly in the mountainous region and
green valleys in most parts of the province. "ue to its geographical location, NWFP has
had been a confluence of different civili#ations hich flourished and vanished ith the
passage of time.
The quasi contiguity of the province, ith the $entral %sian states and ith xiangiang
province of $hina attracted many migrants, businessmen, arriors and fortune seekers
in different ages for settlement. The interaction among different races and their co!
existence led to a rich cultural heritage. The glimpses of such heritage are evident from
the &handhara archaeological sites at &ur 'hattree Peshaar, Takh!(ahi )*ardan+,
eri (ehlol )*ardan+, haba# &ari )*ardan+ Nimo &ram (uddhist tupa )at+, and
collection of &handhara art preserved at at *useum, $hakdara museum )"ir -oer+
and Peshaar museum.
To give proection to the natural scenic place and available rich cultural heritage of the
province, the government of NWFP established arhad Tourism $orporation )T$+ as a
public limited company in /00/. 1ndeed, the foundation of T$ as a timely decision
ith a vie to developing a setup to utili#e the enormous potential of the province, for
tourism expansion. The $orporation is also intended to prepare schemes and makes
concreted efforts for systematic and sustainable development of the tourism industry inthe province. The T$ has also been tasked to2!
• Promote and develop the tourism industry of NWFP by involving both the private
and public sectors3
• Fully protect and preserve the culture, traditions, history, heritage, environment
and ild life of the target areas3
• "evelop the socio!economic conditions of the people and areas having tourism
potential3
• &radually and systematically identify and develop all the existing and potential
areas for attracting tourists both from ithin and outside the country3 and

PHYSIOGRAPHY OF THE PROVINCE
The province is broadly divided into three different #ones ith their peculiar physical
stratum. The northern part of the province is adorned ith beautiful valleys having 4
rivers running roughly north to south inter alia the $hitral, "ir, at, 1ndus and 'aghan.
These valleys are on the northern edge of the monsoon belt, fairly green and partially
ooded in their southern sections. The mid part had been the seat of the ancient
civili#ations particularly Peshaar remained the hub of activities for different civili#ations
including (uddhist 5indu hahi, ikh, 1slamic and (ritish culture all having their mark on
the city. The southern part of the province is belo the monsoon belt and consists of
lo, rocky mountain and ide, gravely plains. The important cities and areas of the
province are described for the convenience of the reader.
HAZARA REGION
The region of 5a#ara is like a door to heaven, opening up to visitors a orld replete ith
natural beauty. 1t as a favourite gateay from the plains into 'ashmir during *ughal,
"urrani and ikh rules. 1t is a large area some /6,666 sq. km. The orld famous
'arakoram 5ighay starts from 5avelian, a ton in this region at a distance of /6/ km
from 1slamabad. The mighty 7-ion 8iver7 1ndus or %basin flos through the entire length
of 5a#ara. 1t is strategically located beteen the Northern %reas, %#ad 'ashmir, Punab
and the rest of the North West Frontier Province. 5ill stations collectively knon as the
&allis and the 'aghan valley are the best knon parts of 5a#ara. Pakistani and foreign
tourists throng its cool and serene valleys during si##ling summer.
HARIPUR

THANDIANI
Thandiani means 7cold7 in the local language. Therefore being a cool place it got the
name of 7Thandiani7. 1t is :?66 meters above sea level on a small plateau surrounded
by pine forests. This beautiful spot can easily be approached from %bbottabad, hich is
:@ km aay. 1t is totally unspoiled and has the loveliest of vies of all the hill stations of
Pakistan. The scenery here is breathtaking and superb.
NATHIAGALI
Nathiagali clad in pine, alnut, oak and maple trees, is the prettiest hill resort in the
&aliyat region. 1t can be approached both from *urree and %bbottabad. 1t is ngland
here ith its small timbered churches, parks, bungalos and the &overnor;s 5ouse.
(reathtaking landscapes, spring ater and fresh air make it one of the most peaceful
hill stations in Pakistan.
DUNGAGALI
This beautiful tourist resort is situated on the slopes of *ukshpuri 5ills. The hills are

AYUBIA
% cluster of four small hill stations of 'hanaspur, 'hairagali, $hanglagali and &hora
"haka is called %yubia and as named after President %yub 'han ho belonged to

place of &hora "haka has a chairlift, hich gives a panoramic and mesmeri#ing vie of

MANSEHRA

But of the numerous beautiful valleys of 5a#ara, 'aghan is the most attractive of all. %
holiday retreat ith alluring scenic beauty, the 'aghan valley is about /A6 km long and
beteen to to four thousand meters above sea level at various places. Toering peaks
of 5imalayan 8ange, glaciers, ater falls and crystal clear ater of the lakes are still in
a pristine state and make the valley an unspoiled paradise. 'unhar river ith plenty of

banks. The nomads take their flocks of cattle to the high pastures of the 'aghan valley

BALAKOT

There is a charming legend about a prince called aiful *uluk ho fell in love ith a
fairy of the lake. The lake is named after the prince. The best ay to reach the lake is to
alk but you may also take a pony or a eep.
BABUSAR PASS
(abusar Pass is at a distance of 96 km from Naran. 1t is on the ay to the pass that the
'aghan valley;s scenery becomes most dramatic. (attakundi is at a distance of /A km
from Naran and provides access to -ala#ar Plateau, lake "odiputsar and lake -ulusar

MINGORA
*ingora has been an important trading centre for the last :666 years. The ba#aars are
interesting to explore for semi precious stones, hand!oven and embroiled clothes,
shals, bedsheets, oodork, tribal eelry and antiques of different kinds. The hills
having the orld famous 7>merald *ines7 are located to the north of the ton.
SAIDU SHARIF

SWAT MUSEUM
This museum is situated beteen *ingora and aidu harif. The archaeological finds
belong to &andhara (uddhist art of at. The samples of local embroidery, eelry and
carved ood obects are on display.
MARGHZAR
*argh#ar is a small ton situated at the foot of *ount 1lam about /< krn aay from
aidu harlf. 1t is famous for its White *arble Palace, built by the Wali!e!at in early
/0@6;s. The palace no serves as a hotel. While going toards *argh#ar, a road turns
to 1slam Pur, hich is famous for its oodork, shals and blankets.
MIANDAM

Traveling from $hakdara, toards "ir, a road turns to the historic village of Dchh. 1t is

KALASH VALLEYS

GOR KHATRI:
The &or 'harti is a large *ughal caravanserai at the top end of ethi treet. The

PESHAWAR MUSEUM:
The Peshaar *useum has one of the best collections of &andhara %rt in Pakistan, all
