Academic Programs offered at the Department and their curriculumBack to Contents

Bachelor of Technology: Admission to this 4-year program

is through the prestigious Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-

JEE), which is recognized as one of the most competitive

examinations in the world. Consequently, some of thebrightest minds in the country join the department through

our affiliation with the JEE. The program endeavours at

providing a strong foundation in theoretical, practical and

design aspects of Electronics and Communication

    Engineering.

Our undergraduates have completed courses related to

Analog and Digital Design, Microprocessors, VLSI, DSP,

    Digital Communication and Instrumentation.

In addition to this, to develop a strong coding background,

the curriculum also includes courses on Computing

fundamentals, OOP and data structures. For a detailed list of

courses completed by undergraduate students over the

duration of their program, refer to

    http://www.iitg.ac.in/acad/courses&syllabi/UG.htm#ece

Hardware design project in the sixth semester and the B.Tech

project spanning across the seventh and eighth semester play

a pivotal role in refining the strong theoretical background

formed during earlier semesters. Moreover, on an average, 2

out of every 5 contact hours are devoted to laboratory

courses. The rigors of labs and projects mean students are

used to delivering quality work within strict time constraints.

Master of Technology: The M.Tech program is offered with

a specialization in one of two disciplines: Signal Processing

and VLSI (The 2010 M.Tech batch has 34 students

specializing in Signal Processing and 4 in VLSI). This is a 2-

year program, admissions to which are conducted through

GATE. The M.Tech in Signal processing curriculum has

advanced topics for providing an insight into the

mathematical, theoretical, and practical application aspects of

signal processing. The M.Tech in VLSI consists of courses on

Digital and Analog IC Design, VLSI System Design and some

aspects of Signal Processing. At IIT Guwahati, students also

do a research based project spread across the third andfourth semesters, aimed at postulating new methodologies

and developing new useful systems. In this way, students

gain a deeper understanding of the subject and its

    practicalities.

Doctoral: The Ph.D. program is aimed at developing creative

thinking, mathematical modeling, and problem solving

abilities of the students by posing them unsolved research

issues in their areas of interest. The department provides a

free, conducive, and friendly atmosphere for students topursue unfettered research work in all areas related to the

field of Electronics and Communication Engineering.

Students admitted to this program have been pursuing

research work under the supervision of one or more faculty

    members of the department.

    Co-curricularsBack to Contents

The department has been home to students with an appetite

to learn so insatiable that even our comprehensive course

structure only makes them yearn for more. The 10-week

hiatus between the 6th and 7th semesters hence sees moststudents enrolled in the Bachelor's degree course fly out to

top companies and universities across the world in an

attempt to enhance their skill-set and knowledge. The

current batch has (among others) students who have

interned at organizations such as Qualcomm Technologies,

IBM, Goldman Sachs and Co., and Siemens Medical etc.

Google's Summer of Code program (GSoC) has also had

contributions from a student developer belonging to our

department. Institutes of global standing such as the IndianSchool of Business (Hyderabad), Ecole Polytechnique

Fdrale de Lausanne (Switzerland), the University of

New Hampshire (USA), and TU Mnchen (Germany) can

also vouch for the excellence of Summer Interns from IIT

    Guwahati.

It is not through summer internships alone that students try

to gain additional experience - research projects sponsored

by leading organizations provide many opportunities to

students for their co-curricular development at IIT Guwahati

itself. Motorola India Ltd., UKIERI, ISRO, DRDO,

Honeywell Technology solutions etc. have been sponsors

of such projects in the years gone by. The department also

hosts national level conferences with considerable incidence.

Impressive voluntary student participation has been

witnessed in the following conferences: QIP Short Term Course on Advanced Wireless

    Communication (22-26th Sept, 2008)

Workshop on Image and Signal Processing (WISP 2007) (28 -

    29th Dec. 2007)

15th National Conference on Communications (NCC 2009)

    (16-18th January 2009)

and Finance. There are athletes who have represented the

institute at the highest level in the Inter IIT Sports meets.

There are key members of the organizing teams of IIT

Guwahati's national level festivals - Techniche and

Alcheringa. There are heads of student clubs and campus

societies. Many of the current outgoing batch of students

have been a source of inspiration for the IIT Guwahati.

    community.

This is the ECE students' society of IIT Guwahati, which aims to

play a pivotal role in their development as engineers. The

society strives at making students aware of the latest

developments in the field of electronics and communication

and other related areas through its acclaimed departmental

magazine, InPhase. It also tries to promote interaction between

academia and industry. The society uses its extensive alumni

base in order to come to terms with these objectives.
