Arctic foxes and Ptarmigans These two animals have formed adaptions. Do you see how their fur color is white just like the ground? This is to blend them in so predators can't see them. If their fur was a different color they would be more vulnerable to predators because the predators would be able to see them easier. Reindeer mosses and Liverworts These plants have adapted to the Alaskan Tundra. They are small plants that are close to the ground. Their roots are also very small and don’t travel far into the ground. If their roots did travel far in the ground the plants would most likely freeze. Liverworts = The Terrific Tundra! FUN FACTS! 1. The word tundra comes from the Finnish word tunturia which means treeless land. 2. Animal populations fluctuate throughout the seasons in the tundra biome. Some animals hibernate during the winter and others migrate to warmer temperatures. 3. Because of the extreme temperatures, most organisms get their nutrients from the decaying of dead organic material. 4. During the summer, it is daylight 24 hours a day. 5. The tundra biome covers about 20% of the Earth. 6. The plants that grow in the tundra biome often grow in clusters to help protect themselves from the severe winter winds. 7. The tundra biome is the driest place on earth. 8. The tundra biome has about 400 varieties of flowers but only 48 different animals. 9. The tundra is a very fragile biome that is shrinking as the permafrost is melting. 10. There are two types of Tundra! Keep Cool in the frozen Alaskan Tundra!!!!! By: Leah Kania and Charley London
