Modes of studyMacquarie offers a variety of learning experiences that are structured to ensure you get the most out of your degree. These range from lectures and tutorials to field work, practical assignments and work-based placements depending on your degree.

LecturesLectures are where you will learn most of your degree content. The length of lectures vary from unit to unit but most run for an hour or more. Some lectures take place in very large theatres with several hundred students, while others are held in smaller rooms with a handful of other students.

TutorialsTutorials, or ‘tutes’, generally include 10 or 20 students and are an opportunity to ask your tutor questions and talk about the material with fellow students. You may also be asked to complete weekly assignments or present a paper to your group.

Online lecturesMacquarie recognises that students of today lead busy lifestyles. Providing flexible learning options is one way of helping you to achieve a high-quality learning experience. Having your lectures available online means you can listen to recordings in your own time. Some students use online lectures as an additional learning tool to reinforce and review the lecture content. Others use it as a lecture substitute if they are not able to attend face-to-face.

Fast-track your degreeSession 3 is an opportunity to accelerate your studies by taking one or two units during summer. It is intensive, running for six weeks from early December (five weeks of teaching and one week of exams). Units offered in Session 3 have identical learning outcomes, means of assessment and prerequisite structures as their equivalents offered at other times of the academic year, though the shorter length of the session may mean that these units will be delivered using online or group sessions, as well as face-to-face teaching.

The other two are known as People and Planet units.Currently all students undertake a People and Planet unit as part of their degree and over time, everyone will also complete a Participation unit. Learn a languageIf you plan on heading overseas for a session or more, you might be interested in learning the language of your chosen country. Ahern’s company, Ahern Media & Training, has recently played a crucial role in the launch of Afghanistan’s first professional media training institution, Nai Media Institute (NMI). NMI will deliver a two-year Diploma in Media focused on radio, television and new media.

In 2009, Ahern was awarded an Order of Australia Media for his services to media education in Australia and internationally. He previously worked for the ABC and the British Consulate-General in a media career spanning 30 years.

As the troops pull out of Afghanistan, media will play an important role in the reconstruction of the country.

Debora Di Dio

Debora Di DioMaster of Development Studies and Culture ChangeUnited Nations World Food Programme

After graduating from Macquarie in 2010 Di Dio was nominated an Australian Youth Ambassador for Development with the United Nations World Food Programme in Bangladesh.

The Programme is the UN’s frontline agency in the fight against hunger.

After completing her 12-month assignment, she stayed on with the programme as a consultant, working across a number of regional projects in the areas of food security, nutrition and education.

“The World Food Programme in Bangladesh is a catalyst of practical hunger innovations,” Di Do says. “There are some truly ground-breaking initiatives here.”

sabrin rahman has been recognised as one of Australia’s Brightest Minds. She received this honour in 2008 just two years after graduating from Macquarie.

She now brings her expertise in corporate social responsibility to HSBC Bank Middle East – one of the largest private organisations in the Middle East.

Initiatives such as the Global leadership Program gave me an edge and allowed me to gain knowledge that could be carried across borders and used in the real world. Stirred by the plight of its residents, in 2010 Mike Minehan packed up his home in Sydney and moved to Cambodia, a country ravaged by landmines.

A former TV anchorman on A Current Affair in Australia, Minehan offered his assistance to the Cambodian Mine Action Centre (CMAC). He now works at the centre full-time, shooting video stories, and accompanying experts into the field to destroy mines and explosives. He also pays the salary of a three-person explosive ordnance disposal team and provides financial support to landmine victims.

“I see the changes in the lives of victims I help, and receive lists every month of the explosives I pay to have recovered and destroyed. The most rewarding part is seeing faces light up when I personally help victims.”

Having begun his career at Macquarie, Australian singer and songwriter Tim Hart returned this year to become an artist-in-residence. As part of a collaborative project between the university and music licenser and royalty collector APrA/AMCOs, Hart has been mentoring students through workshops and tutorials.

A Macquarie contemporary music graduate, Hart is now a high-profile founding member of award-winning group Boy & Bear, and a solo artist in his own right.

The band’s Macquarie links run deep. Hart met fellow band members Dave Hosking and Killian Gavin while they were studying music business together.

Macquarie University LibraryA library is a library, right? Wrong. Macquarie’s library is unique in Australia. As well as having high-tech robots which will find and deliver books to you in minutes, it’s also a versatile learning, research and social space.

• The five floors include learning lounges, quiet study areas, computers, printers and copiers, presentation practise pods, Australia’s first automated document storage and retrieval system (that’s the robots), and a café.

We recognise that life is often a balancing act in terms of responsibilities, and in order to cater for this we have flexible timetabling and lectures online. The Centre for Open Education allows you to study by distance if it is more convenient to your lifestyle, and we also have an excellent reputation for the ease with which you can internally transfer between degrees as your interests develop.

PathwaysYou can take advantage of our various entry pathways if you are unsuccessful in being offered a place via uAC, sTAT or the jubilee scheme. These include the non-award program, Diploma of Languages, Sydney Institute of Business and Technology (sIBT), TAFE and Open universities Australia (OuA).

Rural, regional and remote studentsSometimes rural, regional and remote students experience challenges arising from not having access to resources readily available in the city. Sometimes there are also financial or additional expenses that arise from moving away from home. Macquarie University does not want to see this as a barrier for students and has subsequently developed a range of initiatives and programs of support. These include:

Academic AdvantageAcademic Advantage recognises your achievements in subjects that relate specifically to Macquarie’s degrees. Depending on your performance in these subjects, you may receive up to three bonus points for each one, to a total of five points. You can receive a maximum of nine bonus points if Academic Advantage is combined with other access schemes such as uniTEST or the Lighthouse Scheme.

Commonwealth Supported PlacesAt undergraduate level, higher education providers are able to offer domestic students a Commonwealth supported Place (CsP) (previously known as a HECs place).

• students in a CsP make a contribution towards the cost of their education (known as the student contribution) while the Australian Government provides the remainder.

• Access to Commonwealth assistance for higher education, which includes subsidised places and loans, is dependent on citizenship or residency status. International students are only able to study in an overseas fee-paying place and must pay overseas student fees.

• There are government loan options for domestic students (who are Australian citizens) through the Higher Education loan Program (HElP). These students can access HECS-HELP loans, as long as they provide their Tax File Number.

Each year Macquarie University awards over $2 million in scholarships. Most have a strong emphasis on social inclusion and are awarded on the basis of financial need or other hardship. Others recognise factors such as academic excellence or sporting achievement.

Macquarie University Merit Scholar Program (Aspiring Professionals Program)This scholarship, worth $12,000 per year for five years, is available to students with an ATAr of 98.5 or above. This highly competitive and non-deferrable scholarship is awarded on the basis of academic merit. Students can also augment their application by demonstrating financial need or other hardship.

Macquarie university Mature Age/Non Current school Leaver ScholarshipMacquarie university recognises the financial needs of mature age students/non-current school leavers who are interested in undertaking undergraduate study. Selection criteria takes into consideration a range of factors, including financial disadvantage, sole parent or carer responsibilities and whether the applicant has completed a university degree before. This scholarship is worth $4938 annually for up to four years.

Macquarie University Education Cost ScholarshipThis equity-based scholarship supports recipients whose opportunities to study at university may have been hampered by situations out of their control. This scholarship provides students with $4938 annually for up to four years. Financial hardship, long-term medical condition and long-term carer responsibilities are some of the situations that have been recognised as relevant for receiving this scholarship.

Macquarie university Accommodation scholarshipThis scholarship, worth $9878 annually for up to four years, supports recipients whose living situation may have hampered their ability to study at Macquarie and who would benefit from relocation from regional or rural Australia to study at Macquarie.

Macquarie Higher Study ScholarshipsThis scholarship helps recipients continue their studies to an advanced coursework or honours level by offering $9878 annually. students will need to be able demonstrate a need for this financial support.

Macquarie Indigenous Top-Up ScholarshipThis scholarship rewards Indigenous students at the commencement of their second and subsequent years of study. The University offers these top-up scholarships to each recipient of an Indigenous Access scholarships. It increases in value each year up to $3000 in the fourth year of study.

Macquarie University Refugee ScholarshipMacquarie University recognises the particular financial and other support needs of students from a refugee background. To complement the University’s Refugee Mentoring Program, which raises aspirations towards tertiary study among refugee children, two scholarships are offered each year to students from refugee backgrounds. These scholarships are valued at $4938 per annum for up to four years.

Alex Mitchell scholarship (supported by the university’s alumni)This scholarship enables the holder to pursue a full-time bachelor degree majoring in a subject area within the Faculty of Arts. The scholarship is awarded on an annual basis to an incoming undergraduate student who demonstrates outstanding academic merit and commitment to social issues. It is valued at $7500 over three years.

Applications for the Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood Education) (Distance), the Bachelor of Teaching (Birth to Five Years) (Distance) and the Bachelor of laws (Distance) must be made through uAC at www.uac.edu.au.
