Brocher Symposium

Between Policy and Practice:
Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Assisted Reproductive Technologies
and Equitable Access to Health Care
July 5-7, 2015
Brocher Foundation
Hermance, Switzerland
We invite proposals for paper or
poster presentations during a two-
day interdisciplinary symposium,
hosted by the Brocher Foundation,
in Hermance Switzerland.
The symposium will bring together an interdisciplinary group of scholars and experts involved in
research, publication, and advocacy work in the area of ART policy, health care policy, bioethics,
patient rights, and patient experiences with ARTs. The purpose of the Symposium is to examine the
current ART situation in Europe from a multi-disciplinary as well as cross-national perspective, and
consider ways in which ART health policies could be improved and harmonized with specific
legislative solutions and advocacy efforts. The Symposium will convene scholars and advocates with
expertise that ranges from experiences in nations that currently have comprehensive ART policies to
those that have inadequate regulation or subsidies for ARTs. Twelve Invited Speakers representing 5
disciplinary areas of anthropology, sociology, bioethics, law, and health advocacy have been
confirmed and are scheduled in the program below. There are 4 specific goals of the Symposium:
(1) To identify the key areas of concern regarding the legal, ethical, health, and social impacts of
inadequate ART regulation and reimbursement, (2) To isolate and discuss practical effects of
implementing specific policies in particular national contexts in European nations, (3) To identify the
advantages and challenges of particular policy solutions regarding ARTs, by comparing policy and
provisions in various European nations, and (4) To establish which advocacy efforts are both feasible
and effective in different socio-political contexts with the goal of improving equitable access to
reproductive health and rights.
This CFP is for Symposium Participants from any relevant disciplinary area who are interested in
presenting either an oral paper or poster, as well as Symposium Auditors who are interested in
