Giving For A Purpose—Remembering Tom Cotter By Brian Patrick

How does one give back to something that means a lot to them? Tom Cotter is an exem-plary example of just how this has been achieved. Tom Cotter, an alumnus of Broadwater County High School who be-came a successful business-man, left our community after graduation and spent most of his life in Palo Alto, California as an account executive for Mer-rill Lynch. Even though he moved away, he made a positive difference in our community through his giving. He estab-lished his own foundation, un-derstanding the importance of a permanent pool of money which, when grown, would al-ways benefit a cause. From this foundation, he made annu-al gifts to the Broadwater Com-munity Foundation and various civic groups, knowing that the “permanent gift” would benefit our community forever. He

understood the importance and purpose of our local foun-dation which is to create an ongoing source of funds for community improvement pro-jects. During my time as the school superintendent, I en-joyed delightful conversations with Mr. Cotter as he was checking up on a few friends and the school before traveling to Missoula to a homecoming football game or other activi-ty. He shared his fond memo-ries of school, playing football, and growing up in our com-munity. He appreciated his school experiences and genu-inely cared about our students having an opportunity to be successful. His foundation provided scholarships to stu-dents who may not have oth-erwise had the opportunity to attend college. It was im-portant to him that they expe-rience life outside of Town-

send. The unique criteria for the annual scholarships includ-ed money for students who didn’t receive other awards at graduation. He also encour-aged the publication of a past graduate career history so stu-dents could see that they could become doctors, lawyers, teachers, and engineers. He also knew and understood that people who became homemak-ers were just as important and vital to communities and their children. He loved the All School Reunion and supported bringing former graduates of Broadwater County High School back to Townsend. Tom Cotter passed away in July at his home in California. I consider myself lucky to have known him because of his pas-sion for providing opportuni-ties for Townsend students and his understanding of the importance of our community in that equation. He also val-

ued giving back to the place which was once home for him. Because of his understanding of foundations, his impact on the community will be felt for many years to come. His impact on our community and students will be for a lifetime.

The Broadwater Community Foundation has a history of provid-

ing scholarships for graduating high school students. In the appli-

cation process, students explain how their

involvement in community service activities

and projects made them a well-rounded per-

son and how they would encourage others to

volunteer for community service. In 2014

the foundation granted $3,500 in scholar-

ships to four graduating seniors. Since 1997,

the foundation has granted 61 college bound

students over $31,500 in scholarships.

Broadwater Community Foundation (BCF) received grant requests from Broadwater County Development Corporation (BCDC) to help with the purchase of street light bases for the decorative light posts on Broadway Street in Townsend. BCDC also requested funding to restore the old Power Townsend sign that was painted on the side of the their original building in the early 1900’s. With funding provided by the BCF and funding from other local contributors, BCDC purchased 20 street light bases and then BCDC members volunteered to do the installation.

The Power Townsend sign restoration project was made possible not only by funds from BCF but by contributions from Bud Lawson, Hufnagel Painting, Broadwater County Museum and BCDC. The project’s purpose is to preserve Townsend’s history for future generations. ABOVE: After and before pictures of Power Town-

MISSION STATEMENT The Broadwater Community Foundation is a community endowment fund which will help ensure that the quality

of life in Broadwater County is maintained for future generations. The Broadwater Community Foundation

will allow us to control our own destiny. By developing our resources from the grass roots level, we will control

our own future.

How To Get A Significant Tax

Credit AND Help Your Community

Established in 1997 to encourage individuals, businesses, and

organizations to make lasting investments in their communities,

the Montana Endowment Tax Credit creates an incredible incen-

tive for residents to give to endowments.

The credit allows charitable donors to pay less in Montana

state income tax when they make a qualifying planned gift to a

qualified Montana charitable endowment like the Broadwater

Community Foundation. The incentive is 40 percent of the gift’s

federal charitable deduction, up to a $10,000 tax credit, per year,

per individual, and a credit of 20 percent of a direct gift by a quali-

fied business, up to $10,000 per year.

If you would like to save money on your taxes and help your

local community please contact Broadwater Community Founda-

tion president, Carole Plymale at 266-3590.

Generous Donations In 2013-2014 Every donation made to the Broadwater Community Foun-

dation is appreciated, large or small, as your donations help in-

crease the endowment fund. This in turn increases the distributa-

ble funds available each year for grant giving for projects within

our own community as well as for BHS student scholarships.

From January 2013 through September 2014 there were

some very large contributions made to the Broadwater Communi-

ty Foundation, however, that we would like to acknowledge. The

largest donation was over $12,000 and came from the Montana

Bankers Education Foundation Endowment for scholarships at

the recommendation of the State Bank of Townsend. Organiza-

tions and individuals who gave $3,000 or more included Tom

Cotter and Vigilante Electric Cooperative and those that gave

$1,000 or more included Valley Bank of Helena. Family members

of Rusty Raisland also made a substantial donation for scholar-

ships in his name and memory.

Each year we also have quite a

few PLATINUM sponsorships to

the foundation ($500 or more) and

these included Dave and Fleda

Campbell and Kelly and Jill Flynn

during this time period.

We appreciate each and every

donors support and contribution

to the Broadwater Community Foundation and wish everyone

well in 2015.

Casino Night Funds Equipment BHC Ambulance says thank you to the hospital, the Broadwater Community Foundation and everyone who made the Casino Night a success. Funds received as a result of that community fundraiser were used to purchase equipment for the ambulances. We recently purchased essential accessories for our new cardiac monitor/defibrillator that was acquired through a Montana Department of Transportation grant. These accessories include blood pressure cuffs, adult and pediatric defib-rillator pads and the connections to allow us 12-lead ECG monitoring

capabilities. The newer technol-ogy allows our ambulance crews to monitor heart rhythms, ena-bles EMTs to better prepare the receiving hospital for the type of heart event the patient is experi-encing, and in the near future the ambulance will actually be able to transmit the data (while en-route) to the hospital. Local EMS members are thankful for the support of this community and are proud to serve in the capacity of providing quality care and ever striving to be better.
