Te question: How many Lutherans does it take to change a ligh
Te answer: Change?
What seems to be true o many Lutherans may be true o most pe
without regard to belie or creed. During the past year Concordia
leadership team and I spent a lot o time studying, discussing and
implementing change. One o the things we learned is this: peop
dont resist change, they resist loss. Even when people see with cla
and passion a uture lled with gain and progress, weve learned th
see with equal passion the losses they are being asked to sustain.
Adapting to a new environment requires experiments, new discov
and adjustments. It requires learning new ways and changing attit
values and behaviors until the change is internalized and owned
(Leadership on the Line, Linsky & Heietz, 2002).
Tis issue o the Broadcaster contains numerous examples o how
Concordia, our alumni, students, aculty and staf are adapting
to a changing environment. Our university-wide vision statement
is a reminder to each o us who serve and support this institution
that Concordia must continually adapt to its changing environme
i we are to ulll our mission in these dynamic days o the 21st cen
Preparing students in and or the 21st century also calls us to help
students learn how to adapt to a changing environment.
As administrators, aculty and staf who are working to prepare th
next generation, we can teach and model successully only what w
have learned and practiced ourselves. As you read this edition o t
Broadcaster, I hope you observe, as I have, that while we continue
to adapt to our changing environment, Concordias essence, our
mission, has not changed. Nor will it!
Tis is an exciting time to serve and support Concordia! As 2012 be
I am deeply grateul or the many riends and alumni who support
our students aithully and generously. Our God, who changes not,
is blessing your gits and prayers in marvelous ways. We are adapting
to our changing environment and, through your ongoing support
with Gods abundant blessings, Concordia will be even better equip
in the uture to prepare students or the church and world than it is
May God bless you richly with His grace upon grace in the

Help and hope in JoplinRev Greg Mech, known as Joplins disaster pastor, shares his experience o survivinga deadly tornado, responding to community needs and looking to the uture
On May 22, 20, one o the nations deadliest tornadoesripped through Joplin, Mo, destroying over 9,000 homes
and other buildings and claiming lives Although thedamage knocked most o Joplin down, among those letstanding was Pastor Greg Mech o Immanuel LutheranChurch, alumnus and ormer Concordia chaplainand proessor
At frst I wasnt sure o the nature o the storm, Mechsaid, recalling the aternoon the twister touched down Hewas alone at home in his parsonage playing a video gamewhen he heard a warning siren go o Since Missouri otenexperiences tornadoes, Mech ignored the early warning, determined to beat the next level o his video game
When a second siren sounded, Mech looked out thewindow and saw it was dark on one side o the house andlight on the other He dropped the game and took shelter
Many o Joplins homes do not have basements because thetown is located in a ormer mining area I grabbed a bookand went into the hall
As the winds increased, Mech realized the gravity o whatwas happening He remembers noticing the walls moving asi they were breathing He remembers praying or saety: hisown, his wies, his church amilies and his communitys Heremembers singing the e Deum
I wanted to go out praising the God who had given megood lie, Mech said A sense o calm came over me
as the roo o the house came oTe tornado winds were estimated to be over 200 mph, peaking at 20 mph Te path o the tornado stretched mthan a mile wide Te storm increased in intensity as it macross the city o Joplin, leaving attened houses, debarktrees, mangled vehicles and destroyed buildings in its wa
When the winds subsided and Mech let his home, he wamazed at the extent o the damage Mech described tsurrounding landscape as scoured It looked like picto Nagasaki ater the atomic bomb was dropped on it,
Mech recalled It was surrealistic
O the approximately 22,000 homes in Joplin about 7,were destroyed or damaged According to the NationaWeather Service, emergency managers reported damagto 7% o Joplin Communication lines were cut, and wand electric services were down
As Mech surveyed the damage, he saw people wanderinear the church, shocked rom what had just occurredwelcomed everyone he saw to the parsonage and triedto help in any way he could According to Mech, travelthrough Joplin was nearly impossible because streets wlittered with debris

At the time o the tornado, Mechs wie was working at thehospital in town Mech would have to wait fve and a halhours beore he ound out shewas unharmed via a text romhis son in Las Vegas: Mom OKDoing triage
When the immediate danger
had passed, Mech knew he hadto check on the welare o themembers o his congregationand meet the needs o thecommunity I needed torespond with compassionand care We needed to meetthe physical and spiritualneeds and then deal with thefnancial needs, said Mech
One o the most pressing
problems was sanitation Techurch building had littledamage, so they opened itto the community in the daysollowing the storm A signin ront advertised clean restrooms Because at the timethere was no running water, Paul Doner, an eighth-grader atthe Martin Luther Lutheran School, volunteered to take rainwater in waste baskets and manually ush the toilets He didthat or six and a hal hours straight, said Mech It is amazing
Another need was eeding the residents and volunteers
o congregation and community members, organized hmeals three times a day or three months People rom

Donations and volunteers hcontinued to roll into Joplinand recovery has begun T
blessings have never desertMech said
ools worth $0,000 weredonated to the communityStanley Black Decker to hin the rebuilding process AnImmanuel Lutheran congremember purchased a actorthe wood-working equipmein it Te building was givento the church to use to stor
donated items, and the wooworking equipment was givto the local high schoolto reestablish industrialeducation classes
From October 9-2, ABCs Extreme Makeover: HomeEdition was in Joplin to build seven homes in seven daMembers o Immanuel Lutheran staed the tool traileraround the clock, making sure the more than 0,000volunteers had what they needed to get the job doneTe program will air in January o 202
Immanuel LutheranChurch is on the edgeof the tornados pathand was sparedfor a purpose.

DOG BREAH
When devastation hits, God opens opportuto minister in many dierent ways For themembers o Immanuel Lutheran Church anMartin Luther Lutheran School comort camsoulul eyes, cold noses and long tails
Jackson and Louie, a pair o golden retrievercomort dogs, joined the sta o the churchschool courtesy o Lutheran Church Charitishortly ater the tornado Pastor Mech repothe dogs are extremely helpul in working wvictims o the storm When people pet thethey relax, and pretty soon they start to talkwhats really bothering them
Beginning when they were just three monthJackson and Louie underwent nearly nine mo training to learn how to unlock doors, ca
in their mouths and ip a light switch Althothey are canines o many talents, Jackson anserve mostly by allowing people to pet themhug them
About 20 handlers in Joplin have been trainto work with the dogs, including Pastor Greand Martin Luther teacher Charlotte Rober
And in case anyone orgets these dogs are wodogs, both Louie and Jackson have their own
business cards, email addresses and Faceboo
As part o the ongoing work to rebuild Joplin, ImmanuelLutheran has launched RANSFORM JOPLIN, a non-proftorganization and strategic plan or a new ministry tocontinue transorming neighborhoods and lives in Jesusname Teir website shares, Immanuel Lutheran Churchis on the edge o the tornados path and was spared or apurpose Te people o Immanuel sprang immediately
into action, providing or the needs o the neighborhoodand community
Tere is still much work to do in Joplin Mech reports thatmany o the volunteers and those serving in ministryat Joplin are alumni or ormer sta o Concordia University,Nebraska Everything is always changing, reported Mech, saying that i the Concordia community wants to supportthe rebuilding ministry in Joplin, the best thing to do ischeck the website [wwwtransormingjoplincom] Ourvolunteer and donation needs are always up-to-date there
Tere are signs o progress When Mech discusses Joplins
recovery, he describes traveling down blocks leveled by thetornado and seeing just one amily starting to rebuild, abare house rame jutting out rom the horizon You can seehope and need in one glance, explains Mech
Ater a disaster like the Joplin tornado, Mech eels it isespecially important to reect on the word o James aboutperseverance and wisdom I you can stand, says Mech,
you reach or those who have allen down
It is a thrilling time to be a pastor

Balancing life and learnin
As our lives become increasingly inused with technologyand as the desire or convenience increases, manyuniversities have added online programming to theiracademic catalog, allowing students to earn a degree romthe comort o their homes, oces and local coee shops
Looking ahead to the uture o education, Concordia has beenworking to expand its own online oerings, giving studentsthe ability to earn a degree without stepping into a classroom
We have been progressively expanding our online oeringsor several years, said Dr Renea Gernant, programdirector or gerontology and human services Many o the
gerontology courses, a number o general education courses, graduate teacher certifcation courses, several degreecompletion electives, some MBA courses and a large numbero graduate education courses have been available onlineor some time Until recently, we didnt have the ocialpermissions to oer programs exclusively online
Vice president or enrollment, student lie and athletics ScottSeevers expanded on this Te recent approval rom theHigher Learning Commission to our Substantive ChangeRequest or Distance Delivery allows us to oer up to 20%o Concordias programs in a ully online ormat
For some students involved in Concordias graduateprograms, these online classes may be their only optionas is the case with master o education student Shawna
As a ull-time teacher with two part-time jobs, the onliprogram at Concordia gave me the exibility that I neeto balance school, work and amily, said ate, a seventgrade science teacher and single mother
For ate, taking classes on campus is not a viable optionI reside in Omaha, and I would not be able to make theweekly commute to campus aking classes online allowme to work around my busy schedule At times it gets
challenging; however, I balance it by working on myhomework while my daughter is working on hers It wowell or me
Another student reaping the benefts o Concordias onprograms is Becky Romshek who is currently pursuing gerontology degree
For Romshek, a case manager with the Area Agencyon Aging, a wie and a mother o two, it is the exibilito online classes that allows her to continue her schoo

I am married We have a fve-year-old and an monthold Balancing school, along with work, and activitieso my amily is tough at times, but with the online classes,I can complete the assignments once the girls go to bedor on weekends It allows me to work ull-time, take myfve-year-old to dance and gymnastics, and do amily
activities Te online class schedules allow me to completemy masters and not miss any amily timeI something comes up with work or home lie, theproessors allow time to deal with issues that ariseTe exibility is greatly appreciated
Concordias newest degrees which can be obtained solelythrough online study include the Master in Human Servicesand the Master o Public Health
Te development o the Master o Public Health onlineoering is meant to meet a growing need to increase thenumber o people entering the public health feld
It is apparent that this Master o Public Health program
is not only timely but is very much needed to rebuild thepublic health workorce and meet the health needs othe US and global population, said Dr Jennier Janousek, director o the Master o Public Health program
Additionally, the research shows projections or long-termgrowth and viability, said Janousek, citing a report by theAssociation o Schools o Public Health which says morethan 20,000 Public Health workers will be needed by 2020
O more than 00,000 current government public healthworkers, approximately one-quarter o the current public
sector workorce will be eligible to retire by 202
Te development o the human services program also imeant to meet a growing societal need Gernant sharehuman services workers work with about one in ten peacross a variety o demographic groups By providing dcare to vulnerable populations, human service providemake valuable contributions to our overall quality o li
and the economies o our communities, said Gernanttraining o human services workers has not kept up witdemands o the position Te US Bureau o Labor Statwebsite indicates that As the elderly population continto grow, the demand or social and human service assis
will expand
Concordias vision or 20 includes a goal to grow andexpand our inuence to diverse populations, said Seev
Tat means serving people that we cannot reach todayand we believe that online education will help us reach

Te best educators have always been able to bridge the
gap between the classroom and the real world For Dr JoelHelmer, chair o the social sciences department, bridgingthat gap means taking an annual adventure across Nebraska, complete with a treasure hunt
Each all since 200, Helmer has taken his physical geographyand geology class to the Sandhills to show students theunique physical geography o Nebraska, especially at theOgallala Aquier
Te aquier is one o the largest in the world, and theSandhills are the largest dune ormation in the westernhemisphere, said Helmer Te region is extremely beautiul,
containing a great diversity o ora and auna, naturalwetlands and a unique cattle ranching based cultureraveling into this region provides a great opportunityor experiential learning
During their adventure, students spend three days travelingand staying at the Double R Guest Ranch, a working cattleranch in the heart o the Sandhills near Mullen, Neb,in Cherry County Tey experience the physical processesthat created the landorms frsthand, then work togetherto create an original educational video rom the picturesand videos they collect during the trip
Junior Matt Wingert recalled how it took almost eight
to make the 27 mile trip (a little over double the amoo time it would take to drive the speed limit straightthrough) Dr Helmer had created a packet includinginormation about almost every town along the way, athe journey included many interesting stops
Students got to practice their treasure hunting skills byparticipating in geocachinga world-wide outdoor trehunting game Students used global positioning systemdevices to locate hidden objects (geocaches) whose loccoordinates are posted on the Internet In their pursuitto locate the geocaches this year, students used GPS de
to tap into almost a dozen positioning satellitesTere were boxes about the size o an ammo box hiddesaid Wingert describing the geocaches When we locatethem and opened them, we ound a rolled up piece o pWe added our names to the people who had ound the beore us and then reburied the box It was pretty cool
Dana Zluticky also thought the geocaching was intriguWe planted our own geocache on the ranch on Mondamorning beore we let Its exciting to think that otherpeople will go looking or what we let behind, and thealways be something there to remind us o our trip

Once the group arrived at the Double R Ranch, they hikedand explored extensively Te group also took time to helpPat Bridges, the owner o the Double R Guest Ranch whereHelmers group has stayed the last three years
Helmer explains, [Pats] husband, Jim, passed away lastDecember ater a tragic accident on the ranch Earlier this
year Pat broke her leg and then later her back She is alielong resident o the Sandhills and is just a wonderul ladywho welcomes my students to her amazing ranch each allAter hearing about her tough year, I asked my students ithey would like to help her out by doing some work on theranch during our stay Tey said You bet
Te students took a break rom their exploring to paintthe git shop and the roo o the calving shed Pat was sograteul she gave us a thank you card with cash inside Testudents decided to donate the money to Concordiasscholarship und in Pats name
o complete their adventure the class went tanking on theMiddle Loup River and studied the interdunal wetlandsTe trip down the river in a large, repurposed metal tankprovided an especially ond memory or Helmer
Te tanking trip down the Middle Loup River wasthe highlight o the trip Tis group o students wasadventurousjumping o the cut banks into the river, swimming, climbing and hiking Te unniest thing thathappened was when Dana Zluticky decided to get outo our tank and wade She thought we were in shallow water, but when she stepped out o the tank into the icy water she
went completely under When she suraced her eyes werewide open! We all laughed and laughed, Helmer shared
Tat laughter seems to be indicative o the bond that wascreated in the class rom the adventure
It was really un to get to see everyone in such a dierentsetting, Zluticky said It was good to relax and have someun while exploring the things in real lie that we werelearning about in the classroom
Wingert agreed Te whole dynamic in the class haschanged since the trip We are interacting much more
And the learning that took place is apparent As unnyas it sounds, its almost hard to believe that the things welearn about in class are real, shared Zluticky Seeing themwith my own eyes really made the things we talked aboutin class make more sense
Te whole trip was a learning experience, Wingert saidAnd it was nice that we could tie service into itthat wecould make a dierence

Donning a very important shirtOn Concordias campus Kevin Potratz is known or twothings: his uncanny ability to fx computer problems and hisondness or Hawaiian shirts
But theres more to Kevin than an anity or tech and a loveo ower prints Hes also ond o another shirt, the one thatdesignates him as the Boy Scouts o America scoutmastero roop 2
Potratz has been passionate about scouting since hejoined as a cub scout in the second grade Now he seesparticipation in the scouts as a way to give back to hiscommunity As an adult I have the opportunity to shapeyoung boys into young men through scouting, he said
An Eagle Scout, evidence o Potratzs accomplishmentsduring his twelve years as a boy scout in Wyoming nowsit with his achievements as an adult in scouting asembroidered knot insignias on his scoutmaster shirt Its ashirt he wears with pride
Tat pride is especially evident as Potratz talks about hiscurrent work with youth and the vision o Boy Scoutso America One o the nations largest and most prominentvalues-based youth development organizations, Boys Scoutsstrives to provide programs or young people that buildcharacter, train them in the responsibilities o citizenshipand develop personal ftness
Its not about me, Potratz stresses A Boy Scout troopis boy-led Tis means the boys decide what to do Temeetings are planned and led by the boys Scouting usesactivities to teach the boys leadership skills Tats what its
all about We are shaping boys to be citizens and leadersTe activities in which Potratzs scouts have been involvedare diverse Tey have camped, white water rated, hikedto mountain peaks and carried the colors in the SewardFourth o July parade Most recently Potratz organized aMerit Badge University on Concordias campus
Almost two hundred boy scouts aged -7 rom acrosseastern Nebraska gathered or the inaugural Merit BadgeUniversity Te event allowed scouts to work on meritbadges they wouldnt normally have a chance to obtain
Te goal was to get the boys to begin badges Concordia haunique expertise or acilities to provide, said Potratz Wheelse are they going to be able to throw a pot on a potterswheel in the morningand blow stu upin chemistry in theaternoon? Concordias
resources, both humanand physical, areunique We were ableto provide exposureto a wide rangeo topics that mostscouts cannot fndin their home town
Most o the instructionoered to the scouts was providedby Concordia aculty roops were given the opportunity
to work on badges in 2 dierent skill areas such ascitizenship, nuclear science, graphic arts, geocaching andpublic speaking
Potratz elt the event was a great success, and plans are in tworks or next years Merit Badge University But Potratz isquick to explain that earning badges isnt what boy scoutinis all about
Te goal o our activities is teaching leadership skills, Potrasaid Advancement in rank, ultimately becomingan Eagle Scout, is an outcome o an individual scouts growin leadership and involvement in the activities
Right now Potratz is looking orward to uture activitieswith his troop, including the 20 National Jamboree in WeVirginia, and to helping guide adolescents into adulthood
God has given me some gits that allow me to interact welwith adolescent boys I want to use those gits and witnessmy Christian values through my actions It is a way or meto give back and to make an investment in our uture

She touched a part o me that released
a ountain o creativity I did not realize was
there, shared Sharon Nelsen o her teacher
and mentor artist Sister Corita Kent.
A Joyous Protest: Te Graphic Art
o Sister Corita, a gallery show celebrating
Kents work, was on display this allat the Marxhausen Gallery o Art
on Concordias campus.
In conjunction with the exhibit, the
Marxhausen hosted a panel discussion
regarding theology, art and the evolving
role o women in each. Nelsen, who
now teaches adult courses at St. Patricks
Church in Elkhorn, Neb., shared her
experiences studying under Kent
in the summer o 1960. Other members
o the panel included Father John Foldao St. Gregory the Great Seminary
in Seward, Neb., who spoke about the
theology o Mary in relation to Catholic
and Lutheran doctrine, and Seward
resident Esther Pabe, who discussed
womens roles in the church.
Kent became known or her colorul
serigraphs that highlighted political
issues in the 1960s. She served as head
o the art department at the now-closed
Immaculate Heart College, a private
Catholic institution in Los Angeles.
Ater leaving the Immaculate Heart
order in 1968, Kent ocused her art
on raising awareness o social justice.
Nelson recalled how Kent taught her
students to challenge the precedence
set by those beore them. Tey were
encouraged to experience art instead
o simply learn about it. Kents own art
combined text rom the Bible and pop
culture songs and poems with elements
o graphic design, something nearly
unheard o until her time.
She gave me permission to be dierent,
irregular, creative, innovative and
enthusiasticand to be joyous in that,
said Nelsen.

Te works o Reinhold Marxhausen, Concordia art proessor
emeritus who passed away in April 2011, were the subject
o the exhibit Do You See What I See? A ribute to Reinhold
Marxhausen in the gallery that bears his name.
According to James Bockelman, Marxhausen Gallery director
and Concordia art proessor, the exhibit celebrates the
person, career and reputation o Reinhold Marxhausen.
Ater establishing the art program at Concordia in 1952,
Marxhausen improved, enhanced and promoted art within
the church and world in his roles as both a proessional artist
and an educator.
Te title or the exhibition is taken rom one o Marxhausens
slide lectures oten used in the classroom and or the public.
His emphasis was to encourage people to discover the
exceptional within the common ordinary events o the day.
Marxhausens creativity was centered in the Concordia
classroom where he taught lessons learned rom his
studio experience, said Bockelman. Much o the artwork
he created was a result o his relationship between the
classroom and studio.
Do You SeeWhat I See?
o open the exhibit, Marxhausens colleagues Jack Duen
William Wolram, Donald Dynneson, Steve Wake and
Norman Geske, the director emeritus o the Sheldon
Memorial Museum in Lincoln, joined Marxhausens orm
students Arlen Meyer and Edna Duensing to reect on h
contributions as a teacher, as a Nebraska artist and as a
leader within the Seward community.
Trough workshops, lectures and lms Reinhold Marxh
became known as an innovative and inuential arts edu
throughout the state o Nebraska, the Lutheran Church
and the nation at large, said Bockelman. Marxhausens
artwork, educational writings and related material have
published, exhibited and collected widely.

Womens soccer reaches new heights in 20
Beore the 2011 season Concordia womens soccer coach Lisa
White set a loty goal or her team. Tere is a history
o our teams running into a amiliar wall, a wall that says we
will not advance in postseason play, remarked White. Tis
team ully intends to destroy that wall.
As it turned out, the Bulldogs aced more than just the
challenge o advancing in
postseason play this year. Tree
seniors and key team members,
Mallorie Blanckthe Bulldogs
leading scorer, Mia Pauluhn
a back line leader and Jamie
Sanchezwho was second
in goals and assists, suered
serious injuries that kept them
on the sidelines or a majority
o the season.
While the loss o key players
has a tendency to derail teams,
White didnt allow the injuries
to become an excuse. Tere
was no other option, remarked White. We had goals
to accomplish, and they were to be pursued passionately
by the team regardless o the active roster. Tis team holds
the concept o amily in the highest regard, and this was a
response o a amily.
Te injuries had little eect on our tactile strategy, she
explained. I the injuries had any impact on our team,
it was a strengthening o our amily, and it drove our team
to succeed or those players who would no longer be able
to compete. As a coaching sta, we like to think that we are
developing a trait in our players that will strive to overcome;
players and people that will choose to strive in unavorablesituations rather than sit in a puddle o helplessness.
Te Bulldogs rose to meet Whites tough expectations, going
9-9-1 overall, 6-4 in conerence play and earning the number
our seed in the GPAC tournament.
On Nov. 3 Concordia hosted th seed Dakota Wesleyan
in the quarternal round o the GPAC tournament in what
ended up to be the most exciting game o the season. Ater
regulation and two overtime periods, the Bulldogs and igers
were tied at one goal, orcing a shootout.
We ound ourselves in amiliar ground as that match m
into overtime, said White. It was our th overtime
o the season, which really played into our hands, preve
anxiety rom ever setting in. Te shootout was new terr
or us, and the only thought I can recall having was Yo
do this Dogs!
During the shootout, senior goalk
Ariel Harris made a pair o key sav
giving senior midelder Kelly Ross
chance to deliver the game-winni
goal or Concordia. With the 4-3 w
the Bulldogs advanced to the sem
where they ell to top-seeded Has
College 3-1.
Coach White discussed the impor
o the teams rst-ever playo win
this point we really dont know w
the impact o getting that win wil
although I am certain it will be lon
lasting. At the very least, it provid
our players with afrmation o the
belie in themselves to achieve.
As or individual accomplishments, Blanck and Ross ear
second team All-GPAC recognition. Blanck led the team
in goals scored and kicked three game-winning goals du
the year. Ross had just one goal but contributed a team
six assists on the season. Harris, Sanchez, Rachel Gordon
Molly Humlicek all received honorable mention All-GPA
recognition. Blanck and Sanchez also received coneren
player-o-the-week honors during the 2011 season.
Te Bulldog womens soccer program continues to mak
strides. With the programs rst-ever postseason win notaken care o, Concordia has plans or continued progre
Te successes o this season have contributed towards
team having a tangible experience o what they know t
are capable o, said White. Perhaps more importantly,
have been able to demonstrate what they are capable
o to our opponents. As or the uture, expectations wi
