As we bring a close to the first week of school
Im happy to report that we have had a successful
and productive week. The word for this week is,
routine. Teachers and other staff members work to
establish a routine for everything that is done here at
school. Having a routine adds to the success that
students will ultimately experience. Routines begin
with the drop off procedure in the morning, to how
classes are conducted, to transitioning for one class
to another, to lunches, to fire drill and other safetyprocedures, to pick up at the end of the day. I invite
parents to establish similar routines from homework
time, meal times, free time, and bedtimes. Having a
pattern that is familiar provides our children a freeing
of stability and makes all the activities they have and
expectations for them more manageable.
We look forward to seeing parents at the
school for the Middle School Orientation on
Wednesday, September 5. We are also excited about
Big/Little Brother/Sister Week, September 10 14.
The week culminates in the big reveal on Friday
followed by a family picnic at the school.
I hope each of you have a wonderful, safe,
and restful Labor Day weekend.

Hello Fellow Williams School Parents,
I hope this finds you and your family off to a great start of the school year! I want to take a moment to let you know aboutthe Girls on the Run program we are offering at the Williams School this fall.
Girls on the Run combines training for a 5k (3.1 miles) event with healthy living education. We use exercise, positivereinforcement, and encouraging role models to help girls discover the confidence they need in those critical pre-teen years andbeyond. Through interactive activities such as running, playing games and discussing important issues, participants learn howto celebrate being their unique and real selves. Our hope is that every girl believes and can say, I belong just the way I am.
The girls are encouraged to run, walk, skip, or hop. The goal is for them to move forward, just as in life!GOTR is a non-profit organization founded in 1996. There are now 191 Councils in 45 States and Canada. In 2011, over108,881 girls were involved with the program nationwide. This fall, we will have 40 teams (approximately 600 girls)participating in the Hampton Roads area.
The 10-week session will beginTuesday, September 25th and will conclude with the Santa Shuffle 5K in DowntownPortsmouth for everyone on Saturday, December 15th. The group will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:154:30.
The program will be offered to all girls in grades 3rd-5th. Online registration will be available starting September 1st and will beon a first come; first served basis. We can only accept 15 girls. If your daughter is interested in the program, she mustattend both days of the session in order to participate. The link to register is:
http://www.active.com/framed/event_detail.cfm?event_id=2040346
You can also go to Active.com and search GOTR South Hampton Roads and click on the Fall 2012 Registration link. Please do not wait to register. The group tends to fill up quickly.
We are very excited about this program. It is about fun as much as it is about fitness and learning to make good choices. Weinvite you to visit the GOTR website atwww.girlsontherun.org. Our local website iswww.gotrshr.org.
Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions!
