Brno is the capital of Moravia and thesecond-largest city in the Czech Republicafter Prague. In the 19th century, Brnoembraced the industrial revolution withgreat enthusiasm and the city wasnicknamed the ‘Manchester of Moravia’,however Brno is also a very green city withlots of parks and lakes where visitors canchill out. The national dish of the Czech Republic isroast pork with sauerkraut and knedliky;mammoth coin-shaped dumplings sliced offfrom a long roll. This is washed down withthe golden nectar, probably the bestpilsner in the world. Vegetarians used tobe faced with a choice of breaded and friedcheese or chips, but now the situation ismuch better with an abundance of Italianeateries. Brno also has several first-classvegetarian restaurants, listed below.Desserts are hearty, and include good icecream, thick Turkish coffee and someinteresting liqueurs and digestifs to roundoff a typical blow-out.

The Velký Špalíček complex at Mečová 2holds stores, restaurants and a multiplexcinema, while nearby the shopping mall atOrlí 3 is also a good destination foreveryday needs such as food and clothing.

The shopping and cultural centre GalerieVaňkovka (www.galerie-vankovka.cz) islocated between the railway and busstation on the edge of the town centre. Itcomprises 130 stores, restaurants andcafes and is open seven days a week.
