British and Portuguese Defence Industries Partnering Workshop - Lisbon, 23 May 2019 3

I am delighted to welcome you to this

workshop, at which we aim to deepen further

the already close collaboration between the

defence industries of Portugal and the United

Kingdom.

We are proud of the ancient alliance between our

two nations. I believe that the partnerships the

British Embassy and idD have been promoting

play an important part in sustaining that alliance

in today’s world. Portugal and the United Kingdom

share interests and values and we are determined

to work closely together for a safer world.

The United Kingdom’s decision to leave the

European Union has created some inevitable

political uncertainty. But our Prime Minister has

been categorically clear that while we are leaving

the EU, we are not leaving Europe; and that our

commitment to European security and defence

remains unconditional. That commitment is

expressed through NATO and through our

bilateral relationships with our European allies.

Within that framework, Portugal occupies a special

place, given the many centuries we have been

friends and partners.

Our countries also enjoy strong and ancient

trading relations, in which many distinguished

British and Portuguese companies, as well as

individuals, have played their part. Both

governments attach enormous importance to the

flow of trade and investment in both directions and

want to see our bilateral commercial relationship

flourish and grow in the future.

The group of British companies represented at this

workshop are fine examples of UK’s expertise

within the defence and security sectors. I am

excited about the opportunities for joint projects

with Portuguese counterparts that I hope will

emerge from this event.

My best wishes to all participants - Portuguese and

British!

RolaTube Technology’s proprietary Bi-stable Reeled Composite (BRC) technology has revolutionised the

field of communications, surveillance and inspection. Uniquely, BRCs are stable whether coiled or extended.

This allows a user to carry a five metre communications mast as a 20 x 26 cm roll weighing around 5kg. This

type of mast is much faster and easier to set up and take down than traditional telescopic and sectional

masts. It is also far smaller and lighter - critical requirements for challenging environments including defence,

nuclear and space.

The RolaTube mast can withstand harsh environments and is certified to MIL-STD-810G.

In Afghanistan the RolaTube mast allowed Electronic Countermeasures (ECM) equipment designed to

prevent attacks with IEDs to be taken off vehicles and carried by troops on foot for the first time.

Our latest Integrated Antenna Masts further enhance the advantages of the technology. This unique solution

integrates a high performing antenna into the structure of the BRC mast. This allows quick set up of

communications with considerably less weight and complexity than a traditional antenna system.
