Flooring factsheetCarpet care guide from WOOLSAFE maintenance • cleaning • spot removal • protection • inspection

General Rules for Spot Removal• Soak up liquids with white kitchen roll, tissues, toilet

roll or clean cloth

• Scoop up or scrape off solids

• Try to identify unknown spots prior to treatment –if unsure, use solvent first

• Always work from the edge of the spot inwards

• BLOT, do NOT rub

• Use small quantities of spot remover at a time, applied to a cloth, NOT directly to the spot; workinto the spot with a small, soft brush or sponge

• Take care with applying solvents to bitumen-backedcarpet tiles

• When using solvents always ensure there is plentyof fresh air ventilation

• Always thoroughly rinse out water-based spotterswith clean water

• Dry the spot, if possible, with a hair dryer

Periodic CleaningWhen the carpet or rug reaches a stage where it coulddo with a really good clean, you can either do the jobyourself, or you can call in a specialist carpet cleaningcompany.

If you are considering cleaning the carpet or rug yourselfmake sure to use only WOOLSAFE-approvedproducts. Look for this mark on the bottle or package:

WOOLSAFE-approved carpetcare products have beenindependently and scientificallytested and are safe andeffective for cleaning andmaintaining all types of carpetsand rugs.

Regular MaintenanceRegular cleaning will extend the life of a carpet andmaintain its appearance.Vacuum clean regularly andthoroughly, which removes gritty dirt that can damage the fibres.

Deal with spillages as soon as possible, preferably the moment they occur.

Housekeeping Tips forCarpets and RugsEntrance or walk-off mats

The use of entrance mats at all outside entrances to thehouse is highly recommended, as they will significantlyreduce the rate at which the carpet will soil. They shouldbe of adequate size to allow street dirt to be removedfrom shoe soles and must be cleaned regularlythemselves.

Protective treatmentsMany carpets come with a protective fibre treatment toreduce problems with staining and soiling. These treatments, while effective in many ways, are not bullet-proof and willeventually wear off. Quick response to spills and regularcleaning is still required.

Carpets that have no protector applied by the manufacturercan be treated after installation on the floor by a WOOLSAFE

accredited carpet cleaning company. (To find the nearestWOOLSAFE Certified Operator in your area visit ourwebsite: www.woolsafe.org and go to the PRIVATEHOUSEHOLDER section.)

Beware of products claiming to be safe on all fibres, including wool. It might be true, but if it does not have theWOOLSAFE mark, it is not endorsed by most carpetmanufacturers!

COLOUR MATCHINGCarpets are produced in batches - known ascreels - and usually each batch producesbetween 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipeused by the dyer remains constant, and isfollowed to the letter, in each separateproduction the colour reproduction will varyfrom batch to batch. However production ismatched back to the original or mastersample to ensure that the colour remains‘within a commercial tolerance’.This process if not an exact science and acommercial tolerance is subjective butnevertheless is usually the professionaljudgement of the head dyer based on his/herexperience. A greater level of tolerance is required onblended colours (Heathers etc). To ensureperfect colour matching it is advisable that asingle width be used in any installationrequiring exact colour matching.N.B. Carpets which are laid with the piletravelling in different directions, even thoughthey be from the same batch will appear notto match. For further information please check with themanufacturers recommendations.

SAMPLESThe samples held by individual retailers maynot be from the same batch as currentproduction and therefore should be used as aguide and not an exact colour match.

SHEDDINGAll cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, whichis created during production when spun yarnis cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall ontothe surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’. The effect varies with yarn type and may beremoved without detrimental effect upon thecarpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibreis only a small fraction of the total fibrecontained in the carpet.

PULLED LOOPSPulled loops occur only in looped pile carpetwhere one or more loops in the continuouspile is pulled through the primary backing ofthe carpet. This is usually due to some localcondition, possibly some sharp object whichhas caught in a loop in situ and has resultedin a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with bytrimming the offending end level with therest of the pile. They should not be left as thiscould result in further loops being pulled anddeveloping into a ladder.

SPROUTINGOccasionally an odd tuft or two can work itsway to the surface and stand proud of the restof the pile. This is probably due to one end ofthe tuft being longer than the other i.e. Jshaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedialaction merely requires that the offending tuftsbe scissor trimmed level with the rest of thepile. They should never be pulled out.

SHADINGShading occurs because the pile of the carpethas become crushed, flattened or brushed in adifferent direction to the natural lie of the pilewhilst in situ. This causes light reflection atdiffering angles resulting in the creation oflight and dark patches on the carpet. This willoccur on all pile fabrics but can be morenoticeable on plainer carpets because theshadows created by pile pressure will not bedisguised by a heavy pattern or design.

STATICCarpets do not produce static but like otherhousehold fabrics and objects have thecapacity to store it. Static is caused by thebuild up of static electricity upon personnelin a dry environment and is discharged whena person makes contact with an object whichcan conduct electricity (i.e. door handle orfiling cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensitydepending upon the individual, air humidityand the contact materials. Static is moreusually associated with synthetic materials asthey do not retain moisture very well but itcan and does occur with wool in very dryroom conditions.Preventative measures include theintroduction of moisture into the room or insitu carpet treatment.

FADING ON WOOLCarpets made from wool can and do fade inuse. The degree of fade can vary dependingon the colour chosen and the local conditionsto which the carpet is subjected.Fading can be caused by exposure to ultraviolet light which is found in daylight, but isaccelerated when sunlight shines directlyonto the carpet. This has the effect oflightening or “Bleaching” the colour just asexposure to sunlight will lighten human hair.Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposedto such conditions just as you would protectother furniture or fabrics.A complaint on fading would be consideredjustified if it failed to meet the required shadestandard when tested to the British StandardBS1006 (1990).

PILE REVERSAL(SEE SHADING)

Like shading, this occurs when the pile or napof the carpet changes direction and thusreflects light at different angles showing theeffects of shading which can becomepermanent. It is also described as‘watermarking’. This can happen to everycarpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton,Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indianor even Coir Matting. Like shading it can bemore apparent on plain carpet because heavypatterns can disguise the effects. It can occurquite quickly after installation. A tremendousamount of research has been carried out overmany years by many institutes to determinethe cause of this phenomenon but none of ithas proved conclusive. There is no commonlyknown manufacturing process which cancause or cure this phenomenon and thereforeit is not a manufacturing fault. For furtherinformation please check with individualmanufacturers recommendations.

INDENTATIONSWhen a carpet is subjected to a heavy pointload, such as under the legs of furniture, it isunreasonable to expect the carpet not toindent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile torecover. In the case of very heavy loads inplace for a considerable time, the recoverytime can be very considerable. It must be remembered that it is not only thepile of the carpet that becomes indented. theunderlay will also indent and the backing ofthe carpet may also distort into theindentation in the underlay. Some underlay’swill recover well and some less welldepending upon their composition, thickness, density etc.The use of cups below furniture legs canspread the load and the net result is a largerarea of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavystatic load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939and many manufacturers will have data onthis aspect of carpet performance. In this testthe carpet is loaded for 24 hours and thedegree of recovery is measured after 1 hourand 24 hours. Since there are so manydifferent underlay’s however, it is very rarefor the recovery from a heavy static load to beevaluated on carpet and underlay.Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaningwith a rotating brush machine) will speed uprecovery but in the case of seriousindentations the use of an iron and damp clothor a steam iron together with a blunt darningneedle to carefully tease up the pile can bebeneficial. Care must be take not to over wetthe carpet, of course.

FLATTENINGFlattening will occur as a result of trafficwhich eventually flattens the pile particularlyin the main areas of use. All pile fabrics willflatten to greater or lesser degree dependanton the amount of traffic to which it issubjected and the construction (tuftdensity/pile fibre/height/weight) of theproduct concerned.

SOILINGSoiling is usually the result of some localcondition to which the carpet has beensubjected to, or maintenance, or lack ofmaintenance programme. There is nothing weas manufacturers can do to prevent soiling inuse. There are several types of soiling whichare quite common:Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave astain. In such instances, professional helpshould be sought.Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leavesticky soap residues in the fibres which canresult in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly.Dust - which is carried on draughts can soilcarpets in various ways, apart from theobvious soiled edges, at gaping skirtingboards for instance, dark lines appearing onsurface might suggest airborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fitted floorboards.Sometimes the shape of floorboards can beseen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimesshows itself as spots on the carpet, this is dueto the air carried on a draught under thecarpet escaping through minute holes both inthe underlay and the carpet, leaving dustdeposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paperis essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advisethe consumer when the carpet is measured ofany poorly fitting doors, skirtings, orfloorboards and the consumers responsibilityto ensure any remedial work to seal draughts,is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if aresulting complaint is to be avoided.

INSTALLATIONSWe recommend that all carpets are laid inaccordance with BS5325:2001 (a copy of whichcan be obtained from your library or HMSO)or as per National Institute of Carpet Fittersinstallation manual (Tel 0115 958 3077) forfurther information.

TUFTED

With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpetproduced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll ofcarpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primarybacking fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. Aheavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and asecondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. A widevariety of styles and textures can then be created using varioustechniques.

LOOP PILEBerber • Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effectunderfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours andmay be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop.

Level Loop • When all the loops are of the same height, a highlyflexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casualappearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blendbetween luxury and practicality.

Multi-level loop • The loops vary to two or sometimes threeloop heights to create informal, random textures which are veryforgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for hightraffic areas and busy family rooms.

CUT PILE Freize • Frieze (pronounced free-say) carpets are similar to saxony, but the yarns are more tightly twisted and should always be heat set. They have a dense, low pile surface which creates a coarse, pebblytexture. Frieze carpets are very durable and hide footprints, dust anddirt, which makes them suitable for heavy traffic areas.

Saxony • Saxony textures are made of twisted yarns, which shouldbe heat set.The tips remain very distinct, rather than blending togetherto form a very elegant finish. Saxony textures show footprints andvacuum marks so are suitable for more occasional rooms in the home.More textured variations improve the practicality of saxonies.

Twist • The popular twist carpet is the cut-pile standard. The yarn istightly twisted and often heatset to retain this feature and the result isa versatile, textured finish that is ideal for plain colours.

Velvet • Velvet textures (sometimes called ‘velour’ or ‘plush’) all havea level surface pile of approx 5mm to 10mm height, which is thensheared to give a smooth finish. With very little twist in the yarn, the

WOVEN

Woven carpet may be in a tiny minority of today’s production but

still produces some of the finest carpets which are used for

prestigious installations.

Axminster • The pile of the carpet is inserted into the backing

as it is woven and cut to length, creating U-shaped tufts to give a

velvety surface. The process locks in the fibre to create a carpet of

high durability and performance retention as well as a luxury feel.

The process allows for intricate designs and colours to be used –

although modern trends mean that the traditional patterned

axminster has given way to current fashion trends for plain carpets.

Wilton • Wilton woven carpets are produced in a similar way to

axminsters – the principal difference being that a continuous fibre

is woven all the way through. The carpet can be sheared to create

a range of cut and loop textured effects. The result is a high quality

carpet of unrivalled durability.

Flat weave • Manufactured in the same way as wilton, flat

weave is a loop pile which allows the yarn to be woven across a

wider area to created a flatter, more textured effect.

Carpet types

ends blend together which then further enhances the overall finish. These carpets tend to ‘shade’ with heavy use. Footprints show easilyand the colour looks different from place to place because fibreslying in different directions reflect the light differently. A luxury foroccasional rooms.

CUT AND LOOPWhen some of the pile is cut and other left as loop, a variety ofsurface textures and patterns can be created (in a variety ofcolours). The multi-level surface is excellent for hiding footprints andstains so cut and loop is good for high traffic areas and generalpurpose rooms in the home.

Shag pile • Shag pile has varied in popularity. The pile is up to50mm long and the texture is casual and loose but the surfaceflattens easily and lacks durability.

BONDEDBonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’)are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres arenot stitched into the backing in any way. The technique is principallyused for commercial carpet tiles.

A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working withgripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavytraffic will need a thinner, denser pad.The combinationof thickness and density is all important as a thickunderlay with low density may not perform well.Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it willneed to be - 11mm is often used for luxury installationswith 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet andlaminate flooring offers retailers one of the bestopportunities to add value to every sale - with goodprofitability, trade-up potential once benefits areunderstood and high satisfaction levels with customers.

But 50% of carpet is still sold without new underlay!

Retailers should create an assumption that newunderlay is always required, the only decision is whichtype. It’s also a good target-setter for sales staff.

Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers canwalk on samples with different grades of underlay andfeel the difference has shown excellent results - somemanufacturers offer point-of-sale units.

Underlay

Sponge rubberThe market’s most popular underlay is available in flat orwaffle patterns in a wide range of weights for differentapplications. It performs well for comfort and has adurable spring retention.

PU (polyurethane) foamPU foam is a relative newcomer to the market, typicallymade from recycled foam offcuts. The foam providesexcellent comfort and performance levels with lots ofthickness options - and its light weight helps handling. The product can be re-cycled again after use.

Crumb rubberFlat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall - offering maximum protection but a little less comfort(and very good over stair nosings).

Laminate underlayThere’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminateflooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floorand helping the boards float above any imperfections inthe sub-surface.

CombinationA rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a goodcombination of protection, durability and comfort. It alsoallows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt.

Underfloor heating underlayAlways ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturersoffer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with acombined tog rating up to 2.5 can be used - which meansthe underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0.

FeltThis traditional (but environmentally friendly) underlay ismade from recycled fibres - wool, jute and synthetic - tocreate a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation.Still a very popular choice among contractors whenstretch fitting woven carpets

Pre-tackified underlayA self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefeltand PU. A removable system for heavy use whencomfort is desired

“Voice

OF THE TRADEBob Lawton of Carpenter UnderlaysAge: 64 and a (big) bit Job Title: National Sales Manager. Underlay Division Years with present company: 3 Years in flooring industry: 48Previous roles, retail: Ford Escort driver, Riding Hall Carpets;Water Carrier, Gripperrodsmanufacturing: Sales Director & Managing Director, Ball & Young;Managing Director, Bestbase; Spear Holder, Interfloor.Main non-work interests: Most sports, Rock’n’Roll,Wine tasting and baltishovelling, shouting obscenities at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Feature

“How would you describe current markets conditions now, compared to a year ago?

Very difficult. I’ve been out and about all year working with ourwholesale partners. The retailers, at most levels, are definitelyfinding it tough going. There are some bucking the trend though...how do they do it?

What’s the key market challenge today?

Moving carpet and underlay up the Consumer Buying Index. Oncewe were up there with holidays, double glazing and fast cars… nowwe’re vying to make the top 25 with George Foreman’s Lean MeanFat Grilling Machine.Yourfloors.co.uk is a positive move forward.

What’s the single most important key to success in flooring?

Knowing your products and their applications inside out. It breedsconfidence that the consumer soon picks up on... and that results in sales!

Which companies in the trade most impress you?

Carpet manufacturers that don’t make ‘felt backed’ carpets andretailers that don’t sell the stuff. Why on earth do retailers do this? It’s a massive loss of revenue and it does nothing for the reputationof their business, nor the carpet trade!

What’s your favourite flooring product

Ceramic Tiles on the patio of a Mediterranean villa with a bottle ofcold Pino Grigio sparkling in the evening sun. (Anyway of puttingunderlay underneath ceramic tiles? ...some research needs doing)

If you could ask retailers to change one thing, what would it be?

To stop forcing the poor wholesale rep to reduce his underlay by50p a roll and instead, add £1.00 sqm on the selling price. Then seewhat a difference it’ll make to the bottom line over 12 months!

In all your time in the trade, what has most surprised you?

That the underlay market in Northern Europe has remained sosmall, particularly Germany. At Domotex you need SatNav just toget round the halls displaying wood floors and rugs.

And most disappointed you?

Sweden. I quite like Abba and don’t mind Volvo cars with theirheadlights on …but laminate flooring and dustmites …what was allthat about ? Mama Mia !

Why do retailers sell felt-backed? It’s a massive loss of revenueand does nothing for thereputation of the carpet trade!Who has been your biggest influence in business?

Without doubt, Jim Young. He was my MD at Gripperrods in the70s and Ball and Young (yes, that Young) in the 80s.

What was your first job in flooring?

Retail carpet salesman at Lee Longland in Birmingham. Those werethe days of Brylcreem, drainpipe trousers and Numdah rugs.Underlay? …that was felt wasn’t it?

Would you advise a member of your family to come into theflooring industry?

Already have. My son Adrian works for the Landsdon Group.

If you didn’t work in this industry, what would have beenyour second choice career?

Putting aside the fact that I missed the audition to become the fifthBeatle, …I was a professional cartoonist for 18 months, but, the lureof selling carpet underlay to the eternal gratitude (well, for at least aslong as the guarantee lasted) of the human race brought me back.

There was also a new Cortina and double-bubble commissioninvolved, if I remember.

What’s the oddest thing that’s happened to you in the trade?

Lord Peckham, when he was Sir Phil ‘arris, once bought underlay offme... and it wasn’t rubber!!!

How are environmental issues likely to impact the industryand consumer behaviour?

Every other Tuesday morning our avenue looks like there’s been anindustrial Tupperware party. Colour coded plastic containers forglass, paper, plastic, garden waste, left over food... and soon? carpet, vinyl, lino, laminate flooring, underlay... it’ll affect us all at trade andconsumer levels. Recycling is becoming more important as landfillbecomes more expensive... and scarce.

Kronospan, a leading UK manufacturer of wood-based panels, has received theKingfisher Group ‘Supplier of the Year’ award. Kronospan was selected for itshigh levels of service, quality of product and speed of delivery.

The Kingfisher Group is one of the world’s largest DIY retailers, operatingacross 18 countries with over 775 stores. Kronospan supplies the group withvariety of products including laminate flooring, MDF and chipboard, as well askitchen furniture components.

Sales director Michael Dineen received the award on behalf of Kronospan. Hesaid: “We pride ourselves on the close relationships we have with ourcustomers and of the high levels of service we offer. This is what makes thisaward so important to us. It also highlights our commitment to manufacturingthe highest quality materials and our reliability in terms of reaching deadlines.”

www.kronospan.co.uk.

In a demonstrable sign of support, Charles Wallace, head of Consumer Codes at the Office of Fair Trading, visited the Carpet Foundation to identify ways in whichtheir Consumer Code of Practice could be improved and also industry wide issues that needed addressing.

The day long session looked at how the Foundation’s Code of Practice could be amended and improved in a bid to further increase its effectiveness. In aninteresting development, areas under consideration included product accreditation; training and accreditation of fitters; improved service and pricing transparency.

The Foundation took the opportunity to point out that its retail members were identifying more and more cases of misleading pricing policies from certain retailerswhich was a cause for concern and gave rise to unfair competitive advantage. In a welcome move, the OFT said that it was prepared to consider investigating thelegality and impact of these malpractices. Evidence is now being sought from Registered Specialists to support this claim.

Charles Wallace also confirmed that the new Doorstep Selling Regulations did apply to carpet retailers who conclude the contract in a consumer’s premises duringa measuring and estimating visit.

Mike Hardiman, Chief Executive of the Carpet Foundation commented:“It was an excellent meeting and Charles’ approach was most refreshing. We were particularly encouraged by his belief that the Code of Practiceshould become more of a ‘living’ document with continuous improvement.

“The issue of ‘misleading pricing’ is a real bugbear for our retailers. Some retailers make wildly exaggerated claims about the ‘normal’ or‘recommended’ prices of carpet products on sale so that they are able togive seemingly generous discounts to consumers. This misleadsconsumers into thinking they have bought a high value product at abargain price and this adversely affects retailers who use honest pricingpolicies.

“Our members want us to become more hard nosed and commerciallyfocussed and what a breakthrough this would be for the trade if we couldput an end to misleading pricing.”

dispatched immediately we make use of a national distribution service.Managing supply chains is a core part of Burmatex’s activities and we use localsuppliers wherever possible to minimise our carbon footprint.'

Cormar, meanwhile, runs its own fleet of vehicles for a number of reasons, saidmanaging director David Judge: 'Customers are more demanding, not just ofproduct quality but also of service. Making a sale in an already tough market ishard but a quick and reliable delivery service could mean the differencebetween winning or losing the transaction.

'Our transport service is now an integral part of the Cormar service and wecontinue to invest in it. One of our key differentiating factors is the 'on-time'delivery – the delivery date stated at point of order – which is one way we addvalue to our retailers. We also continuously review our operations to reduceoperating costs and run the fleet efficiently by using the latest in technology.'

The company has found that an efficient, nationwide delivery service has helpedto endorse its reputation as a reliable supplier to independent retailers.Thedecision to make door-to-door deliveries was made over 30 years ago and theoperation now includes 10 outbases, in addition to its central facility in Bury, resulting in an average turnaround service of 48 hours to customers aroundthe UK.

Axminster is another manufacturer that runs its own delivery fleet to providedependable commitment to its customers, said Steve Upperton, sales director.'Some of our trucks are so well cared for and meticulously maintained thatthey regularly win awards at truck festivals and some have even covered anamazing 750,000 miles and are still going strong,' he continued.

'Retailers can almost set their clock by our weekly deliveries, knowing theirorders will turn up on the same day, time after time. This is great comfort forthose retailers that pride themselves on customer satisfaction as they canconfidently arrange fitting without disappointment.

'Also, given that retailers know their Axminster Carpets driver and vice versa, there are no enquiring telephone calls and trucks unable to find the shop – evenin the trickiest of locations – just the right carpet turning up at the right time.

'With many drivers and retailers on first name terms, our distribution service isfar more than just delivering carpet, it is about maintaining the high standard ofsupplier/retailer relationship that Axminster Carpets is renowned for.'

With global economic meltdown gleefully predicted by the national media on aconstant basis, it's unsurprising that retailers in many sectors of the market areseeing reduced footfall and, in several cases, a corresponding fall in sales.

A stalled property market is frequently linked with less demand for interiorgoods, but it can have benefits in other areas. Consumers electing not to movehouse often decide to make their home more comfortable and there are fewthings more comforting than good quality carpet underfoot.

But consumers are increasingly expecting better levels of service, which doesnot necessarily involve getting their goods faster. Prompt delivery is of course afactor, but they also expect to be kept informed with accurate times when thedelivery and/or fitting will occur.

This is when an efficient distribution system pays dividends, allowing theretailer to make accurate appointments with their customers and maintain apositive relationship. The UK flooring sector has seen considerableimprovement in its distribution activities in recent years, to the benefit ofeveryone concerned.

While some manufacturers run their own delivery fleet, others use carrierssuch as Transfloor. Steve Makin, the company's transport manager, said: 'Withthe market becoming increasingly tough, manufacturers and wholesalers face adifficult balancing act to control distribution costs whilst maintaining theservice levels which are so crucial to retailers. The key to successfuldistribution is investment, as we have proved with Transfloor.

'We invested heavily to ensure that it had the quality and strength of fleet to beable to deliver to the entire UK, regardless of how remote the location.'

The company recently opened its second distribution centre in Colchester, complementing its Blackburn facility, to improve deliveries to the south ofEngland.

'We can maintain twice weekly deliveries even in these difficult times, as aresult of carrying for several large manufacturers, including Cavalier Carpetsand Ulster Carpets, and as a result the service is fast becoming the first stopfor British and European carpet suppliers looking for a reliable and qualitydistribution service,' Makin continued. 'Run by professionals who know thebusiness inside out and with the facilities to provide exceptional service,Transfloor dispels the myth that high standards are only obtained by verticalintegration. Stringent quality control and an ethic that focuses aroundtrained delivery operators, ensures that each carpet arrives on time and inperfect condition.'

Burmatex uses both its own delivery and that of a carrier for environmentalreasons. Becky Peters, Brand Manager, explained: 'The environmental issuessurrounding logistics are a growing concern for Burmatex and we have strictcompany policies already in place, and regularly complete environmentaltransport audits. As a UK based manufacturer, the distribution of our productsis handled centrally from our head office in West Yorkshire.

'We ensure deliveries are extremely efficient by scheduling each trip toincorporate several orders.Where individual orders are required to be

Interfloor educates on underlayA new 16-page booklet from Interfloor will help retailers train their staff tobetter understand and sell the benefits of new underlay to their customers. Forwith less than half of carpet consumers buying a new underlay, there’s a biguntapped sales and profit opportunity.

The booklet contains findings of research showing why consumers buy underlayand importantly why they don’t! Underfoot comfort and carpet durability arethe main reasons for buying followed by noise and heat insulation and finallyenhancing carpet appearance.

Of the 51 per cent of consumers who don’t buy new carpet underlay the topreason they give is because they want to use their old underlay. Other reasonsinclude not feeling underlay was necessary, buying a carpet with a secondarybacking, nobody suggested new underlay, too expensive, mistakenly believingunderlay doesn’t make carpet better and using the old carpet as underlay!

The training booklet, available to retailers, counters these consumer objectionswith positive responses and explains how to use point of sale to sell more, andbetter underlay. “It is important staff understand their customer’s needs and ‘sell’the benefits of new underlay to match these needs,” said Interfloor marketingdirector Steve Woodhead.

The new booklet called ‘How to sell more underlay and make your customershappy’ shows retail sales professionals how to define the consumers’ needs fora range of underlay products throughout the home. It illustrates how point ofsale can be used to convey underlay benefits in the store and advises how bestto use the marketing tools that Interfloor offers.

Axminster Carpets has taken inspiration from the 15th Centuryand turned it into a piece of modernity with its latest creation,Salcombe Striata.

Unveiled to interested visitors at the National Floor Show,Salcombe Striata is beautifully made from Axminster Carpets’unique 100% pure new wool Home Spun Yarn, and takes itsmotivation from early 15th Century dyeing techniques whereuniform colours were difficult to replicate. The result is a patternedcarpet that has a distinctly contemporary feel.

Following the trend for linear patterns in the home, SalcombeStriata introduces a broken stripe effect that bears a similarity tostriations in sedimentary rock formations. The finished article is farsubtler than a traditional stripe and the simple colour combinations co-ordinate wellwith a variety of contemporary colours from the recently refreshed Devonia Plainscollection. As part of the Axminster Co-Ordinates collection, Salcombe Striataallows homeowners to introduce patterned carpet in certain rooms withoutaffecting the overall unity of the interior.

A woven Axminster rated for Heavy Domestic use, Salcombe Striata provides anideal solution for busy homes looking for the quality and durability synonymous withthe Axminster Carpets name.

Richard Lawrence, Marketing Manager comments: “Pattern is having increasinginfluence within the home and many consumers are now returning bolder carpetstyles to their interior. Salcombe Striata offers a subtle step into pattern thatcaptures the popularity of stripes, but which still provides a unifying colour withhints of different tones rather than stark contrasts.”

Emma, is a bright young newcomer to the flooring industry having previouslyfinished a drama course and then spent time holding drama workshops inschools locally. But she was eventually drawn into the world of flooring byher father, Richard, who owns the business.

“I have lived and breathed carpets since I was knee-high, as my Dad oftentalked about work things at home and would always look closely at the carpetwhen we went anywhere, so I know more than an average flooring salesbeginner.” Emma explained.

After talking to her for a while, it was clear that she certainly knew hermarket and her customer and she felt that her drama skills could be veryuseful in sales. “I can smile and be friendly with the most difficult customerbecause of my training” she proudly explained.

The shop set up by her father has been in the current position for the lastthree years and offers a good range of wool carpet with the Cormar rangesselling the best –“Value and quality is vital at the moment and the £25-£30per sq m range is probably the most people are spending at the moment.”

The shop manager, James Scott admitted that it had been a very tough year –“Very slow trade, even on Saturdays and people are shopping around moreand then expecting us to match prices against poorer quality wool carpet.People simply don’t understand the price is a reflection of the quality of theproduct. ”

Sleaford has eight flooring shops, so competition is fierce but she maintainsthere is respect and friendly co-operation when they need some help.

In terms of keeping the business coming through the door, they are running alocal advertising campaign and have invested in signwriting for their vehicleswhich Emma considers has been a really good move plus clearer directionalsigning from the main road has helped people find them on their tradingestate base.

“Reputation is very important in Sleaford, we ensure our fitters arrive ontime, are smart in appearance, neat with their work and, tidy up afterthemselves. High standards of service pay dividends for repeat business andword of mouth trade.”

“We are a small team, just the three of us but it is really nice working in afamily business, we help each other and the flooring industry is great. I reallyenjoy my job and I intend to stick with it.”

Carpet recyclers need to identify the pile fibres in order to find thebest value for materials recovered from them. Carpet Recycling UKhave engaged with the two major US manufacturers of near infra-red identification ( NIR ) technology to solve the problem for UKrecyclers.

The use of hand held NIR instruments is already well established inthe growing US carpet recycling industry with these instrumentscalibrated to handle typical carpets which are mainly 100% of onefibre type. In the UK market pile fibre blends particularly with woolare well established and therefore instruments had to be modifiedto meet UK needs.

NIR analysers from Axsun Technologies and Polychromix are nowavailable with the capability to identify the majority of UK blends. These are battery operated portable hand held devices which arequick and easy to use in a carpet sorting operation.

Both of these devices can also be ordered with textile and plasticidentification libraries so that the recycler can use them across awide range of material streams.

Dow Building Solutions has announced the UK launch of Floormate 300-A, a new blue extrudedpolystyrene foam insulation board made with naturally occurring CO2. The new product – createdfrom leading insulation material, Styrocam® - has been designed for use in floors across the spectrumfrom residential to commercial buildings. Along with low water absorption, ease of installation andexcellent insulating properties, the new material also has a high design load along with durability, which is particularly important to specifiers looking for proven long term performance.

Floormate 300-A has a nominal compressive strength of 300 kN/m2, and a design load (the loadwhich will give maximum compression of 2% over 50 years) of 130 kN/m2. Declaring the design loadallows specification against the long term requirements of a building’s floor, as well as built in safetymargins.

“Failure of a floor can be incredibly expensive, due to the interruption of business and cost of repair, for any building irrespective of its use,” said Conrad Newberry,Technical Manager for Dow BuildingSolutions (pictured above). “In particular, floors in environments such as busy retail outlets andoffices must be capable of withstanding anticipated loads – and they must also be able to maintainthat performance over a building’s lifespan, making durability key.”

Dow manufactures Floormate 300-A using naturally occurring CO2 as a blowing agent to create itsfamous blue extruded polystyrene foam – thus there is no additional emission to the atmospherewhich would contribute to climate change.

Burmatex, has unveiled its stunning new design hub following a period of intensechange. The former squash courts are now unrecognisable, sporting a design studio, boardroom and showrooms for both contract and residential brands –demonstrating that its design team’s creativity really has no limits.

The unused squash courts at the Airea plc head office were completely transformedwith the installation of a mezzanine floor, providing 320m2 of useable space. This ‘hub’is now home to Burmatex’s design and marketing team, comprising a design studioand commercial showroom centring on new product development, a state of the artmeeting room boasting cutting-edge media technology, and a beautiful residentialshowroom to demonstrate Airea plc’s domestic offering, Ryalux, in situ.

Darren Clanford, creative director at Airea plc, said: “The design hub’s purpose is twofold; not only is it the perfect environment to receive clients, it is where all our newcollections are conceptualised, developed and showcased. At the moment, forexample, the corridor running through the rooms is trialling phase two of our latest collection, Evolve. The remainingflooring scheme comprises products from the current Evolve collection, combining Evolve Skyline – a contemporaryproduct inspired by city architecture and geometry – with Anyway Urban, a sophisticated tonally linear product withbright contemporary highlights. Both products can be fitted broadloom, tessellated or random lay, which gives thecollection flexibility and reflects the modern interior design requirements for today’s working environments.”

The best design processes are centred around not only the creation of an impactful space, but the way in which spacesare used. Burmatex has been instrumental in proving that, today, floors can add a focal point to a room or harmonizeseamlessly with an existing interior scheme. Its new meeting room, for instance, is the perfect example of how differentcolours and textures work together, employing Axis, a dense twist carpet tile that brings a contemporary slant to a classicstyle in lime, to complement a statement walnut boardroom table. Darren concludes: “It’s interesting that when we hadcompleted the first stage of the design hub, namely the office and the design studio, it felt revolutionary. But now that thesecond stage of the boardroom and residential showroom is complete, we’re itching to update the office. It shows howcommitted we are to developing brands built on innovation.”

A new report suggests that as the effects of the wider economy reaches the UK floor coverings market, a series of takeovers and sell offs will sweep themarket. The report, by leading industry analysts Plimsoll Publishing, has found that a combination of needs is forcing smaller companies to consider selling to theirlarger rivals and larger players are looking to buy their smaller rivals to diversify and develop their businesses.

David Pattison, senior analyst at Plimsoll, has a clear view on this: “It has a great deal to do with necessity. Many of the larger players in the market, despite thedownturn, are desperate to find new ways to develop their business, but with the current climate, costs are being cut and business development is beingslashed. So they need options to help them protect their futures and tap into exiting revenue and profit streams. Financing a series of small acquisitions at keyniche players in the market will give them two clear benefits:

• A quick route to increasing sales for relevantly low cost

• A foothold in the emerging sectors of the market

The facts are very clear :

• For the last few years, the larger companies have been surviving onwafer thin margins, most only making 2.1% or less

• 100 of the UK’s top 1000 players are actually losing money at themoment. This is evidence that their strategy of chasing sales andvolume compromises profits.

Meanwhile at the other end of the market, an emerging group 231companies, are smaller, high focused players. These fast-growingcompanies have been able to carve out niche markets for themselves, some with premium profit margins. The best examples of thesecompanies are:

• Reporting sales increases of well over 18.8% per year

• Reporting margins of 5.7%

However, despite the excellent returns there now seems to be aneagerness to sell from many of the owners. Several factors are at playhere: a combination of their businesses now reaching a critical point intheir development, twinned with the tightening of credit and a reluctanceof the money markets to finance the next phase of development. Intoday’s market, selling their business makes sense for two clear reasons:.

• Brings the chance of stability and security to protect the business

• Accelerates the development of the company due to extra resources

David Pattison comments on these smaller companies seeking buyers:

“It would be a pity if some of these exceptional businesses went to thewall, or do not get the maximum chance to prosper just through lack offunding.”

Flooring sector set for sell-offs

Novostrat makes a name for itself

Leading business information provider, Equifax, has released its latest BusinessFailures Report. Not surprisingly, there are increases in the number ofbusinesses going bust in some sectors, but the overall picture for the year todate suggests that other sectors are faring better.

The worst hit was the manufacturing sector, which saw a 13.8% increase in thenumber of businesses failing in Quarter 3, compared to Quarter 1.

However, the services and wholesale sectors both saw failures drop by 4.2%and 2.6% respectively in Quarter 3, compared to the beginning of the year.

“Whilst there is clearly immense pressure on businesses with increased costsall-round, it appears that some sectors have been taking the right precautionsto manage cashflow and avoid the risk of bad debt and this is enabling them tostay solvent”, confirmed Neil Munroe, External Affairs Director, Equifax.

The construction and transport & communications industries continued tostruggle in the difficult financial climate with failures up 11.7% and 11.9% inQuarter 3, compared to the first Quarter of 2008. “Although there areincreases in these sectors, the trend through this year is pretty steady”,continued Neil Munroe. “And significantly, failures in the Retail sector onlyincreased by 2.8% in Quarter 3 compared to Quarter 1.

“Indeed, the overall increase across all sectors for Quarter 3 is just 3.2%compared to the beginning of the year, but the 0.5% cut in interest rates will bea welcome lifeline for businesses in all sectors as the conditions remain tough.”

UK businesses hold steady despiteeconomic turbulence

At the beginning of 2008 it would be fair to say that most people would have said “Novostrat –Who?”

Although Novostrat was already the largest manufacturer of polyethylene foam in Ireland, to theirrecent target sector, i.e wood and laminate floor underlays, they were positively embryonic. Howthings change. After a year of major brand building, Novostrat is right there, winner of the bestUnderlay 2008 at this year’s FloorStyle exhibition, sporting a range of 8 laminate floor underlays andtwo carpet underlays, and now with a network of distributors and retailers across Ireland and the UK,Novostrat is being recognised and respected. Novostrat is building its brand on a series of distinctselling points which separate them from the competition. A low tog rating, which makes the rangeideal for underfloor heating applications, a low physical weight, which makes them ideal for storage, carrying and installing, high acoustic insulation, with ‘Sonic Gold’ achieving a 0.22 dB rating….. but mostof all, very competitive pricing for a very high performance product.

Novostrat underlays are made using polyethelyne foam with a variety of foil and membranelaminations – as such they are fully recyclable, they achieve a Class 0 fire rating and the manufacturingprocess neither produces nor uses any harmful HCFC’s, heavy metals, chlorides or bromides. Thesevery green credentials are finding favour with Local Authorities and environmentally aware developerswho are now insisting on ‘Green’ products. Novostrat High Performance Underlays are not being solddirectly to the consumer.

2008Harrogate Review

A co-ordinated attack on the consumer

Stewart Martin, Axminster’s Group Sales Manager, sums up thecompany’s attitude: ‘Let’s go for it’. Their policy in a tight market is to keepmoving ahead strongly with a stream of new launches and colourways togive retailers more to talk about. As a result, Harrogate saw lots that wasnew including the stunning new natural tones of Royal Clovelly andintricate, delicate floral designs of Torbay Persian Lace. Strong-sellingDevonia Plains showed off a new palette with four new plains colours andeight new heathers – and a total choice of 60 hues! A star of the showwas the coordinated collection of Moorland carpets in 3 colourways – atwist, a tweed and a woven (pictured). ‘The options we can now offer arehuge’, says Stewart.

Victoria’s stand was alivewith exciting new products, none more so than thatcarpeting the stand whichwas one of the most originalnew products seen at theshow – City Living.Thiscarpet is an all-wool tuftedcut and loop but it’s difficultto describe the geometricstripey multi-level texturethat the designers havecreated in 12 colourways. It’sthe ideal answer to thecustomer’s ‘I’m looking forsomething different’comment but you’ll have tosee a sample to see why!Other newcomers were thecoordinating all-wool BerberStripe and Berber Ridge, thesubtle heather tones of the80/10/10 Kelso, the top-endchoice of 60 oz Regal Twistand a re-coloured TudorManor.

Concluding our reports from theNational Floor Show at Harrogate withan analysis of design and colour trends

The sneaking suspicion that two thirds of the colour palette is there just tomake the wall racks look good has been prevalent for the last two or threeyears at Harrogate. But now the flooring business is definitely getting brighter.

And that’s brighter in the sense of smarter – not just more colourful.

OK, the bulk is still beige. The safe naturals grow and grow with addedenvironmental credentials. Heathering and berbering abound.

The stronger colours have had a better run in recent times with rich reds andbrowns, sophisticated taupe and black combinations making a good impact.

But most noticeable at Harrogate was the more intelligent use of colour –more subtle shading, more contemporary pastels, more acceptable stripesand, above all, the combination of all of these into attractive, co-ordinatedcollections.

Co-ordination is probably the single most important trend that came to thefore on the floors of Harrogate and many design hours had clearly beenused to deliver options that were well thought out and, most importantly, highly sellable.

Victoria’s marketing people Martine Hirrel(left) and Claire Gough.

Page 42: BRITAIN’S No. 1 FLOORCOVERING MAGAZINE FOR THE RETAIL · PDF fileBRITAIN’S No. 1 FLOORCOVERING MAGAZINE FOR THE RETAIL AND CONTRACT MARKET ... visit our new online demo ... roll

And the commerciality of co-ordinates is all important – they sell on aesthetic appeal anyhow but there is that extraopportunity to roll a sale from one room to the next, thereally give salesman a story to tell and a reason to trade up.

The Show had some fine examples of the art from leadingmanufacturers. In some cases, the co-ordinated range had beencreated from one original design process – in others, ranges hadbeen added or combined from existing ranges to make a co-ordinated collection.

Axminster leverage the breadth of their capability for plains, tuftedand axminsters in a co-ordinated collection called Moorland thatoffers flexible options across three colourways. ‘We have seenthose trends in fabrics and wallpapers and wanted to see whatwe could do with existing ranges. This is a good way forward forus,’ said Group Sales Manager Stewart Martin.

But for pure class, the co-ordinates prize may have to go toUlster whose launch of the Country House Collection atHarrogate after two years in the making was a joy to behold.Three styles – a contemporary floral design (Melrose),a plaid (Beaumont) and an antique Persian (Kazan), which is also available in a co-ordinating runner, share the same colour palette.

One of the smartest co-ordinates on show was Brockway’sVogue collection – a high quality 2-ply twist with five plains ineach colourset and a matching stripe with all of thosecolours also available in a running. ‘We’ve had an excellentresponse to this approach,’ said Brockway’s Charles Annable.

Victoria are new to co-ordinates but presented a highlycommercial tufted loop collection of eight plains and fourstripes with some strong colours in their BerberStripe/Berber Ridge range.

Telenzo’s Zodiac offers a different approach with a strip,a spot and a square – three designs in seven colourwayswhile on Georgian’s stand, the Stoddard’s brand wasoffering an up-market option of six stripes and fiveplains.

Stripes are having a good run in the market andwhat may have seemed something of a fad two orthree years ago has now achieved an establishedplace in the market as consumers appreciate justhow practical a striped carpet can be in additionto its designer appearance.

Apart from some of the co-ordinated optionsalready mentioned, Edel Telenzo’s Tube collectionis particular worthy of note as is the Rock n’ Rollcollection of Alternative Flooring that make itshighly attractive (and award-winning) debut at theshow.

In terms of the colour palette overall, softer, warmer shades are empahasised such as inContemporary Life’s new Elementas velvets.Kingsmead continue to be ‘colour-active’ in their

Ulster Carpets made a seriousimpact on the show with the launchof their sumptuous new CountryHouse Collection – a 9-shot 80/20woven axminster which will beavailable to the market in January. The collection, presented at Harrogatein a lifestyle inspired display withstunning roomset photography, isconceived in three beautiful styles:Kazan – an ornate traditional designin rich dark colours with a vintagePersian feel in seven colours; Melrose,a contemporary fresh floral design in 10 modern colourways; andBeaumont, a plaid available in four colours. Each design isdistinctively different but have all beencreated from a complementary colourpalette resulting in a versatilecollection of stand-alone products or co-ordinating designs.

Edel Telenzo has an intelligent approach to the market, constantly monitoring consumer trendsand tailoring their response with keen focus. The smart new feel about the company was reflected inthe new contemporary stand design, carpeted with the highly popular Tube stripes carpet. New forthe show was the Zodiac, a clever co-ordinating contract range that provides a strip, a spot andsquare in seven colourways and there was also a makover of the ‘London’ range with a re-colouring ofGreenwich and Henley and a new stripey Windsor to complement them.

Hall’s Floorings arrived at their first Harrogate in considerable style with an attractiveand highly professional presentation of the extensive range of floorcoverings and point-of-salesupport that they supply to independent retailers. The company emphasises that ‘you are ouronly customer’ in its total focus on independents and cite many retailers who take the entireHall’s branded product range to furnish their stores for a mid/upper quality profile. Ranges arehighly contemporary such as 80/20 structured loop natural berbers, a new style-theme vinyllectern and innovative products from Gerflor include matt textured wood-look Senso vinyl andversatile textile backed vinyls.

approach and are expecting greys, aqua greens and mushroom to do well in theforthcoming season along with damson for the more adventurous.

Heathers are getting a little more fleck with good examples at Kingsmead andCormar have great expectations of their Primo Tweeds ranged launched in theSummer.

There were so many rugs at Harrogate this year that it would be difficultto identify a dominant design trends as everyone is offering the widestchoice but innovations in texture and multi-height yarns is creating someinteresting options.

In wood floors, oak is still a UK firm favourite but some of the whiter bleachedfinishes are doing well.

In the smooths department, some of the more interesting offers includeBalterio’s shiny Magnitude laminates with metallic sheen [CHECK] and thelizard-like vinyl from [CHECK] on the Halls Flooring stand floor. And if youthought you’d seen it all, check out the High-Definition collection of Bonar’s newFlotex and the high-tech white Grid design that the Rubber Flooring wonawards with at the show.

Overall, flooring design is looking brighter and smarter than ever. Let’s hopeconsumer enthusiasm can respond to the excellent design work going on inthe industry.

Most noticeable at Harrogate was the more

intelligent use of colour – more subtle shading, more

contemporary pastels, more acceptable stripes and,

above all, the combination of all of these into

attractive, co-ordinated collections.

The Mohawk Group has introduced a new point-of-sale unit designed to showconsumers the full potential of the Karastan range of high-end residential floorcoverings.

Capturing the stunning textures and patterns available throughout the Karastan range, the point-of-sale unit can display up to 90 samples in a 13.5 x 18” format of Karastan’s

wool and wool-rich carpets. With such a variety of styles on offer, the unit allowsretailers to show the depth of Karastan ranges to their customer base.

The display stand enforces the high-end residential nature of carpets from Karastan andwith a small footprint, it also takes up minimal space in store.

“We are aware that for many retailers, Karastan will appeal to a niche but importantproportion of their customers and so we wanted to ensure that the display stand

reflected this,” comments Howard Lindsay,The Mohawk Group.

“Karastan is a luxury product and it is important that consumers immediately relate thestand with quality and style, so we have introduced some strong lifestyle photographyand branding to ensure this occurs. However, we also wanted to make sure that the

Karastan unit could also be flexible within store, allowing retailers to change their floorspace at will and promoting the benefits of good in-store design. Hence, the Karastan

display stand is easy to move, giving retailers exactly this.”

The Karastan display unit is available to retailers under a rebate scheme which ensuresthat successful Karastan stockists will not only benefit from an excellent range ofcarpets, but also a comprehensive sales support package, which is only partially

represented by the stand.

UK urged to be more export awareUK manufacturers have been urged to be less cautious about exporting asBritish representation at the world’s top trade fair for flooring has fallen.

The spectacular Domotex show in Hannover this January is expecting growthfor the 2009 event but only about 30 of its 1,350 exhibitors will be British – in2008 it was nearer 40 companies.

“The UK is still cautious about exporting and too inward-looking,” said IvanDekeyser, International Sales Director at Burmatex and Ryalux.

“Exporting isn’t easy but it’s easier than it was and there are greatopportunities for British manufacturers abroad if you are prepared to be in itfor the long term. We’d love there to be more UK companies at Domotex,”he said.

In addition to Burmatex/Ryalux, the UK contingent includes flagship carpetcompanies such as Asiatic, Rama,Westex and Wilton and underlay and ancillarysuppliers such as Ball & Young, Carpenter, F. Ball and Bonar Yarns. The British WoolMarketing Board and the British Wool Textile Export organisation also wave the flag.

And there’s a GB squad in the European Team Floor Laying Competition – withThe Stocklists as one of the sponsors.

Speaking at a Domotex preview event in London, Ivan added: “Domotex is afantastic show that is totally focussed on flooring – no interiors. All the mainplayers do attend and we find our customers want to come.

“It’s a great platform of capability to show people what you can do and, ofcourse, it’s a great chance to see what everybody else is up to and what thetrends are,” he said.

Domotex attracted 47,000 visitors last January with 55% of those attendingfrom outside Germany and more than 80% of the exhibitors are notGerman.

“The number of registered exhibitors is very encouraging given the currentdifficulties being experienced by the flooring industry,” says Stepan Ph. Kuhne, aboard member of Domotex organisers Deutsche Messe AG. “During periods ofmarket weakness and volatility, companies need to seek new business leads, follow new initiatives and improve their image. There is no better a place to dothis than Domotex.”

The Domotex event’s total focus on flooring has established the event as theindustry’s barometer of taste, trends and design with exhibitors makingmaximum efforts to impress.

In addition to the trade stands, Domotex pulls together a whole program ofevents including ‘contractworld’, the Carpet Design Awards and technicalpresentations. This year there is a new health and safety initiative which willfocus on protecting fitters’ knees.

A major highlight, and worth the trip across the Channel in itself, is FloorForum– a joint initiative by 30 carpet and rug manufacturers presided over by toptextile designer Ulf Moritz. This showcase of ‘carpet as art’ dominates Hall 3 andthe 2009 event will focus of texture and the tactile qualities of carpet.

For fans of hand-made carpets, the Loom Lounge in Hall 18 presents anattractive environment to see the finest craftwork and alongside in Hall 17 willbe the world’s largest square Nain carpet – 400 square metres with 490,000knots per square metre! It has taken six years to make.

Binding a stair runner and fitting a 13 step staircase, including half landing, in just 30minutes proved to be a crowd puller at Harrogate Floor Show this year. Fitters and

retailers watched transfixed as Kelly Huddleston on the Stairrods (UK) stand appliedEasybind to a stair runner and then deftly fitted it up three steps, curved it

seamlessly around the half landing using the company’s new Easy Studs, and then upthe remaining ten steps.

Those fitters and retailers yet to switch to Easybind and Easy Studs wereparticularly impressed with the neat bound corners and the strength of the binding,

whilst those already using Easybind came to pick up tips from Kelly and to see Easy Studs in action for the first time.

Jamie Adamson of Stairrods (UK) reported that home owners are increasinglychoosing a contrasting Easybind colour to their carpet in order to create a

decorative feature on their stairs.

Easybind -is an attractive rope-styled edging, which is easy to apply and available in23 colours. Runners and rugs can be made with Easybind at a customer’s home -

cut from any width or design of carpet and then immediately fitted.

Easy Studs are a smart and fast new method to fit stair runners around cornersonto a landing. Applied in conjunction with Easybind, the edging trim, Easy Studs

avoid the need for naplocks on corners resulting in a seamless, continuous stairrunner with an unbroken pattern flowing down the steps. Available in five metal

finishes, Easy Studs are decorative, highly functional and simple to use.
