What Was It About?
• Freedom of the seas– Britain was fighting a war against the French– British would force U.S. sailors to work on British
ships– British ships would seize U.S. cargo – British supported American Indians
– President Jefferson wanted to remain neutral, or not take sides in the war
Battle of Tippecanoe
• U.S. forces fought Tecumseh, a Shawnee Indian leader resisting pioneer settlements in Indiana
• The British supported Tecumseh
The Battle of Baltimore
• A man named Francis Scott Key watched the attack on Fort McHenry and the next day the American flag was still flying high
• This inspired Francis Scott Key to write the Star Spangled Banner
• The British realized they couldn’t afford to keep fighting the Americans AND the French anymore

• The Treaty of Ghent had been signed after the Battle of Baltimore
• Neither commander of the U.S. or the British heard about this treaty in the south, so a battle was fought even after a peace treaty had been signed
• The Americans still won and that put an exclamation mark on the war
