Future Stars TAG Rugby Programme

Bristol Rugby Community Foundation’s Future Stars TAG Rugby programme is delivered in 135 primary schools throughout the South Gloucestershire, North Somerset and Bristol City Council areas, providing over 12,000 children with the opportunity to take part in 10hrs of High Quality P.E. and Sport.

The programme provides children at a grassroots level with the chance to participate in rugby both in, and out of curriculum time. The Future Stars programme has been a massive success within primary schools over the past 4 years for a combination of reasons.

Firstly, we maintain a very high delivery quality by using well quali"ed and motivated coaches and by ensuring they operate a maximum of a 15:1 player:coach ratio.

We provide practically based teacher education to school staff as part of weekly delivery, which helps staff at each school continue rugby at the school after the programme has moved on.

Every young person will get the opportunity to take part in an end of term Festival based at the nearest accredited rugby club.... next page to continue:

Continued...The festival not only provides the children with a chance to show-off their newly found rugby skills but provides a safe and friendly introduction to competitive sport. The festival also assists the school build and strengthen links with local rugby clubs so that young people can continue playing rugby outside school hours.

Festival winners then get the chance to take part in a Champion Of Champions playoff at the Memorial Stadium during half time of a Bristol Rugby home "xture, with the winner of that, representing Bristol Rugby at Twickenham for the Aviva Premiership Finals!

Furthermore, every child on the Future Stars TAG Rugby Programme will get the chance at attend a Bristol Rugby Matchday Experience at the Memorial Stadium. This features a pre-match parade by the children prior to the start of the game, in front of the ever-supportive Bristol Rugby fans, cheering the children on. This is truly a day not to be missed and where the children feel apart of a team community.

Each year, the programme receives outstanding Monitoring and Evaluation, resulting in more and more schools wanting to get involved. In tough "nancial times, the sad news is that without corporate sponsorships to support our own fundraising activities, Future Stars would not exist and so we are always on the look out for new corporate partners.

If you would like the chance to get your school involved in this amazing opportunity or if you are interested in helping to fund these projects and give children in Bristol the experience of a lifetime, then please contact Ben Breeze on 0117 9581641 or at [email protected] at Bristol Rugby Community Foundation TODAY!

Eagle ProjectThe Eagle Project introduces Year 7&8 secondary school Girls to the game of rugby union. Sport provision for Girls is seriously undersubscribed and so Girls can be miss out on the chance to try rugby unless by chance they know someone who is connected to a local team. This lack of opportunity has been challenged by the Eagle Project, which is proving to be an outstanding pilot program that is managed and delivered by Geraint Lewis.

The Eagle Project is delivered over 2 terms and teaches the skills, tactics and gameplay to help Girls make the transition from TAG rugby, through mixed gender minis rugby and into rugby for real. The Eagle Project not only aims to increase the participation and retention of girls in sport, but looks to teach teamwork and life skills. The Eagle Project works in partnership with Bristol Ladies and bene"ts from international players attending coaching sessions, which has inspired young girls about the game of rugby and further enhanced the quality of delivery of the Eagle project.

The Eagle Project is part funded by BRCF fundraising events, through contribution from Great Western Round Table and a working partnership with the Rugby Football Union. Without this partnership approach, the Eagle Project project would not have started and would not be giving communities and their children the opportunities that we all sometimes take for granted.

Eagle project also provides a safe and friendly introduction to competition through a Girls Festival hosted by the nearest accredited rugby club that has an active girls junior section. The festival celebrates the progression and successes made during the programme and helps to create a link with a rugby club where Girls are able to continue their rugby. This link is valuable as it enables the Girls to become a part of a club outside of schools hours and in the long-term, give them life skills and con"dence that will bene"t society and communities...next page to continue.

What do you do and why?A bit of everything! But my primary role as Chief Executive of BRCF is to secure funding, monitoring our award winning work and forming new partnerships, in what continue to be very tough financial times.  Rugby is tremendously engaging for the young people who we work with and we are always on the look out for new ways to use this engagement to benefit our local community whether through sport participation, education and/or social inclusion amongst others. How did you get started in rugby? I started playing rugby at secondary school and got into the University at Loughborough during which time I was lucky enough to play for England U21s.  The year I left Uni was the year the game turned pro and I signed for Bristol RFC.  Four great years at Bristol from 1995-1999, then played for Newport which turned into the Dragons from 1999-2006 and then four years at Exeter Chiefs from 2006-2010.What’s been your favourite moment at BRCF?My favourite moment happens quite regularly, and is the moment when young people make a positive

choice or take part in something they didn't think they could do before.  That moment of realisation when a young person realises they can better themselves and their lives – humbling and rewarding all at the same time!Who has been a major influence in your life? I do not think I have one singular influence on my life, I always try to talk to happy and successful people and find out how they did it!What is the future of BRCF? Tough but very bright, there is tremendous opportunity for the work we deliver.  The key will be successful partnerships, staying open to change and continuing to improve our already award-winning work.

Now, lets really get to know you......What is your favourite food? Anything that is fresh, spicy and chucked on the BBQ!

What is your worst food? Processed food! Full of fat, salt and sugar.

Favourite Film? It's still The Matrix, the concept appeals to my cynical side and the message is go get a life!!

If you could be anything you wanted in the world from being a movie star, Prime Minster or even a Superhero...what would you be?Politics does interest me, but so does owning a guesthouse on a cliff in the middle of nowhere!

Any Final Thoughts? Life is not a rehearsal and should not be seen as a free ride, find out what motivates you, what makes you happy and go create that future for yourself and your loved ones.

RUGBY TIPS!Core skills!! Every rugby player needs them, Hear all the critics and plaudits, listen to only a few.  If your lucky to have talent, practice it until no one can deal with it!
