STAFF REPORT
BRISTOL — From being anusher at St. Joseph Church tochampioning a new Civil Warmonument, Tom LaPorte hascontributed to many aspects ofcommunity life during his sixdecades in Bristol. On Saturday, the Mum Festival
will salute LaPorte’s civic activ-ism. He will be recognized as the2012 Hometown Hero and thenext day will serve as marshal of
the Mum Parade.The Bronx-born LaPorte
becomes the fourth HometownHero. The festival honored Iraqwar veteran Matt Lavoie in 2010and last year recognized DavidCarello and his son Matt, both ofwhom have served overseas.A local history buff, LaPorte
has been an eyewitness to muchof the Mum City’s history, havingmoved here in 1951. A productof local schools, he found work
at New Departure and remainedwith the automotive manufac-turer until his retirement in 1992.He has seen the city make thedifficult transition from an indus-trial center to a largely bedroomcommunity and sports communi-cations hub.He also has given much of his
time to Bristol Hospital, where hehas been a hospice volunteer.LaPorte is vice president of the
Memorial Military Museum, a
member of the board of directorsof the Bristol Historical Society, and a member of Team Bristol —a non-profit group that hosts localevents such as the celebration ofthe city’s 225th anniversary in2011.“I holdTom in greatest respect,”
said Bob Montgomery, city his-torian and a member of TeamBristol. “I have worked with himon a number of activities and heis a pleasure to work with.”
