DAY 2 DISCOVER….CLIFTON

Clifton is one of the oldest and most affluent areas of the city, much of it having been built with profits from tobacco and the slave trade. Situated to the west of Bristol city centre, it was at one time a separate settlement but became attached to Bristol by continuous development during the Georgian era and was formally incorporated into the city in the 1830s. Grand houses that required many servants were built in the area. Although some were detached or semi-detached properties, the bulk were built as terraces, many with three or more floors. One famous terrace is the majestic Royal York Crescent, visible from the Avon Gorge below and looking across the Bristol docks.

Work actually began in 1831, but the project was dogged with political and financial difficulties, and by 1843, with only the towers completed, the project was abandoned. Brunel died aged only 53 in 1859, but the Clifton Suspension Bridge was completed as his memorial. Designed in the early 19th century for light horse drawn traffic, it still meets the demands of 21st century commuter with 11-12,000 vehicles crossing it every day. The Clifton Suspension Bridge’s spectacular setting on the

cliffs of the Avon Gorge has made it the defining symbol of Bristol, drawing thousands of visitors a year just to stroll across for views of the ancient Avon Gorge, elegant Clifton and the magnificent city beyond.

The project was the brain-child of street artist Inkie and Bristol music promoters Team Love who, together with the support of Bristol City Council, brought leading street artists from around the world to Bristol to transform the facades of ten multi-storey buildings along the street over the course of a week - and in doing so they made Nelson Street one of the world's largest outdoor art exhibitions.

DAY 5 DISCOVER….BATH

El trayecto entre Bristol y Bath es de aproximadamente 20 minutos Founded by the Romans as a thermal spa, Bath became an important centre of the wool industry in the Middle Ages. In the 18th century, under George III, it developed into an elegant town with neoclassical Palladian buildings, which blend harmoniously with the Roman baths.

2. Llegada a Bath Spa Station. 3.

This being a Roman city, the Abbey, built in 1499, is a mere latecomer. There’s been a church on this site for a thousand years, and England’s first King was crowned here. The carvings on the front of the Abbey show the dream of Bishop Oliver King who had it built (it was the last Tudor church in Britain before the Reformation). Angels climbed up and down a ladder to heaven in his vision, but the only way the stonemasons could distinguish between them was to make the downwardly mobile ones do it head-first.

Continuación hacia los PARADE GARDENS. Parada para comer. Si el tiempo lo permite, picnic

It’s said to be one of only three in the world with shops on both its sides, and was designed by Robert Adam. It also has a collection of strange bollards on either side of the road, definitely not designed by Robert Adam. Their purpose is possibly to stop traffic from crossing it, or maybe they’re part of an abandoned giant chess set

6. Recorrer la GREAT PULTENEY STREET, bordeada de casa victorianas 7. Regresar paseando hasta el JANE AUSTEN CENTRE y por GAY STREET hasta THE CIRCUS

John Wood made the Circus represent the Sun and the Royal Crescent the Moon, and Brock St, which links them, runs along an old line of psychic energy. In the Circus you can admire the frieze of carved 528 symbols, each one different, running around the front of the curved terraces.. This is all John Wood’s masterpiece, designed by him and completed by his son in 1754. John Wood was obsessed by arcane symbolism, hence the 528 carvings, taken from a 17th-century fortune telling book.

Designed by John Wood the Younger as lodging-houses for the gentry on their visits to Bath, this crescent was completed in 1767. It was in the middle of farmland then and had wonderful sweeping views of the hills and Avon valley. Those views now offer additional interest for fans of gasholder design and housing estate layout, but the Crescent itself remains a splendid sight, with Victoria Park calmly green below.

10. Regreso a Bristol
