ISTORY
ARCHAEOLOGYAND STATETHEORYSubjects and
Objects of Power
Bruce Routledge
After neo-evolutionism, how
does one talk about the
premodern state? Over the
past two decades
archaeological research has
shifted decisively from
check-list identifications of
the state as an evolutionary
type to studies of how
power and authority were
constituted in specific polities. Developing Gramsci’s concept of
hegemony, this book provides an accessible discussion of general
principles that serve to help us understand and organize these new
directions in archaeological research. Throughout this book, conceptual
issues are illustrated by means of case studies drawn from Madagascar,
Mesopotamia, the Inca, the Maya, Egypt and Greece.
Bruce Routledge is Senior Lecturer in the School of Archaeology,
Classics and Egyptology, University of Liverpool.

BRONZE AGETEXTILESMen, Women andWealth
Klavs Randsborg
In the ancient civilizations of
the Eastern Mediterranean,
textiles were generally
much more costly than
foodstuffs, animals or
bronzes; it is very likely that
the same was the case
throughout prehistoric
Europe. In this study, the
first for over seventy years,
Klavs Randsborg examines
completely preserved
woollen dresses, both female and male, from Danish oak coffin graves of
the early second millennium BC. These garments, matched in age and
superb preservation only by finds from Ancient Egypt, along with related
artefacts such as images and figurines, are used to build up a rich picture
of Bronze Age society and culture in the context of archaeological,
ethnographical and historical information from Europe and beyond.
Klavs Randsborg is Professor of World Archaeology, University of
Copenhagen.

PAGAN ANDCHRISTIANReligious Change in
Early Medieval Europe
David Petts
Conversion to Christianity
was a key cultural process
that saw the transformation
of Europe from the Classical
world to medieval
Christendom. The study of
conversion in the early
medieval world has
increasingly become a focus
of study for both historians
and archaeologists, but there
has been a noticeable lack of engagement with the methodological and
theoretical problems underpinning any attempt to explore the
archaeology of belief. This book, drawing on case studies and examples
from sources including the ‘Celtic’ west, Anglo-Saxon England,
Scandinavia and Eastern Europe, tackles these key issues and in
particular explores two under-theorised aspects of conversion: the
relationship between archaeology and belief, and the ‘pagan’ as a key
element in conversion.
David Petts is Lecturer in Archaeology, Durham University.

FLUID PASTS Archaeology of Flow
Matt Edgeworth
Fluid Pasts outlines an innovative archaeological approach to the study
of rivers and flowing water, challenging the view that rivers are somehow
more natural, less cultural than other kinds of material evidence. In
bringing archaeological perspectives to flowing water, as opposed to
static and solid objects, the book follows water from rivers along
numerous channels to the many archaeological sites where running
water was utilised or built into designs and layouts, or where other kinds
of flow have left material traces. A focus on flow changes our perception
of otherwise ordinary sites and landscapes, its very nature prompting us
to think about the material world differently, and to develop more
dynamic and fluid forms of analysis.
Matt Edgeworth is Research Associate and Project Officer, School of
Archaeology and Ancient History, University of Leicester.

WRITING ANCIENT PERSIA Thomas Harrison
The history of the Achaemenid Persian empire has been largely rewritten in the last thirty years by
an international group of scholars, inspired partly by new sources of information, but also by a
concerted attempt to look at Ancient Persia in its own terms, rather than through the lens of
neighbouring societies, and to excise the pejorative bias of the Greek sources. This essay is a
critique of this new Achaemenid historiography, concentrating on the difficulties of using Greek
sources for the writing of Persian history. It argues that the excising of Greek bias should be seen
to be, if possible at all, a much more complex procedure. It then examines two themes in more
detail: the representation of the Kings and Queens (in Greek sources and in recent histories of
Persia), and the accounts given of the Persian Wars and the conquests of Alexander. It concludes
with an analysis of past versions of Persian history, suggesting that there is a much greater degree
of continuity between earlier accounts of Persia (often derided as narrowly Hellenocentric or
orientalist) and those of the new Achaemenid historiography.
Thomas Harrison is Professor of Ancient History and Classical Archaeology, University of
Liverpool.

THINKING THE OLYMPICSThe Classical Tradition and the Modern Games
Edited by Barbara Goff & Michael Simpson
This is the first book to address the convergences and divergences between the ancient and
modern Games from the perspective of the classical tradition, examining the ways in which
connections between ancient Greece and the revived Olympics may be constructed, interrogated,
lauded, or deplored. The Athens Games in 2004 were a climax of convergence, as the Games
effectively returned to their ancient origins. Yet the Beijing Games in 2008 celebrated another,
even more ancient civilisation. Thinking the Olympics brings together contributions from various
disciplines ranging around two opposing themes. On the one hand, the Games are presented as
an ideal enactment of pure, intrinsic Olympic values, such as peace through sport; on the other,
the Games appear as a messy performance of extrinsic investments by diverse groups with their
own interests, commercial as well as political.
Barbara Goff is Professor of Classics, University of Reading.
Michael Simpson is Senior Lecturer in English Literature, Goldsmiths University of London.

GREEKS AND PARTHIANS IN MESOPOTAMIA AND BEYOND, 331 BC – AD 224
Wolfram Grajetzki
Greeks and Parthians is an innovative, archaeologically based investigation into urban
life in Mesopotamia and the northern part of what is now the Persian Gulf, from the
arrival of Alexander the Great to the end of the Parthian Empire. With detailed coverage
of the cities of Seleucia-Ktesiphon, Babylon, Uruk, Susa, Spasinou Charax, Ikaros
(Failaka) and Tylos (Bahrein), Wolfram Grajetzki shows that for most people in the
region, life and material culture were not, as is commonly stated, transformed by the
coming of the Greeks. The Parthians have tended to receive a negative press from
historians, but their supremacy lasted some 350 years and the archaeology of their cities
reveals innovations in architecture and decorative arts, with lavishly equipped houses
showing a high standard of living.
Wolfram Grajetzki has participated in excavations in Egypt and Pakistan and taught
Egyptology at Humboldt University, Berlin.

PAGAN GODDESSES IN THE EARLY GERMANIC WORLDEostre, Hreda and the Cult of Matrons
Philip A. Shaw
This book considers evidence for Germanic goddesses in England and on the Continent, and argues on
the basis of linguistic and onomastic evidence that modern scholarship has tended to focus too heavily on
the notion of divine functions or spheres of activity, such as fertility or warfare, rather than considering the
extent to which goddesses are rooted in localities and social structures. Such local religious manifestations
are, it is suggested, more important to Germanic paganisms than is often supposed, and should caution us
against assumptions of pan-Germanic traditional beliefs. Linguistic and onomastic evidence is not always well
integrated into discussions of historical developments in the early Middle Ages, and this book provides both an
introduction to the models and methods employed throughout, and a model for further research into the
linguistic evidence for traditional beliefs among the Germanic-speaking communities of early medieval Europe.
Philip A. Shaw is Lecturer in English Language and Old English, University of Leicester.

INVENTING BYZANTINE ICONOCLASM Leslie BrubakerByzantine ‘iconoclasm’ is famous and has influenced iconoclast movements from the English Reformation and French Revolution to Taliban, but it has
also been woefully misunderstood: this book shows how and why the debate about images was more complicated, and more interesting, than it has
been presented in the past. It explores how icons came to be so important, who opposed them, and how the debate about images played itself out
over the years between c. 680 and 850. Many widely accepted assumptions about ‘iconoclasm’ – that it was an imperial initiative that resulted in
widespread destruction of images, that the major promoters of icon veneration were monks, and that the era was one of cultural stagnation – are
shown to be incorrect. Instead, the years of the image debates saw technological advances and intellectual shifts that, coupled with a growing
economy, concluded with the emergence of medieval Byzantium as a strong and stable empire.

POLYBIUS AND ROMANIMPERIALISMDonald Walter
Baronowski
This is the first study to
explore in depth the complex
reaction of the Greek
historian Polybius to the
expansion of Roman power.
Although he considered
imperialism intrinsically noble,
and both admired and
supported Roman
domination, Polybius also
demonstrated a certain intellectual distance from Rome, evident in his
application of abstract principles to the evaluation of Rome and other
imperial powers, his acknowledgement of the aggressive drive
underlying all imperial ventures, his willingness to criticize Rome, his
concern for the interests of subject nations, the promotion of his own
political views, and his willingness to contemplate the end of Roman
power.

Classical Studies, McGill University, Canada.

THE CLASSICSAND SOUTHAFRICANIDENTITIESMichael Lambert
The teaching and research of
the Classics in South Africa
are deeply rooted in the
racial, political and educational
inequalities which have
characterised its turbulent
history. Michael Lambert
opens three windows on to
this history, using the creation
of identities as his theoretical
lens. The foundation of the
Classical Association of South Africa in 1956 and the cultural reinforcement
of Afrikaner nationalist identity; the deployment of British colonial identity in
public discourses about the role of the Classics in apartheid South Africa at
an English-speaking university; and the exploration of black African
identities in response to the teaching of the Classics at missionary
institutions, where ‘vocational training’ was locked in combat with a classical
education, regarded by an educated black élite as the means for upward
social mobility in a highly-stratified colonial society.
Michael Lambert is Senior Lecturer in the School of Literary Studies,
Media and Creative Arts (Classics), University of KwaZulu-Natal.

AESCHYLUS: PROMETHEUS BOUND I.A. Ruffell
Prometheus Bound is a play beloved of revolutionaries, romantics and rebels, though its blazing idealism is tempered with an acute awareness of the
compromises, dangers and obsessions of political action. This companion sets the play in its historical context, explores its challenge to authority, and
traces its reception from the seventeenth to the twentieth centuries. Many scholars have disputed its Aeschylean authorship, but it has proved the
most influential of tragedies outside academia. Marx’s favourite tragedy, Prometheus Bound is also a foundational text for the genre of science fiction
through its influence on Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. In its open-eyed celebration of technology and democracy, it is the tragedy for the modern age.
I.A. Ruffell is Lecturer in Classics, University of Glasgow.

AESCHYLUS: SUPPLIANTSThalia Papadopoulou
Aeschylus’ Suppliants dramatises the myth of the fifty daughters of Danaos, who flee Egypt and come to Argos
as suppliants, trying to escape forced marriage to their Egyptian cousins. It was long considered to be the
earliest surviving tragedy. Even after the mid-20th century, when new evidence established a later date for the
play, critics tended to condemn it for its alleged ‘archaic’ features. As a result it has long been underestimated,
although a careful examination reveals it to be one of the most exciting tragedies. This companion employs a
variety of critical approaches to set the play in its literary, dramatic, social and historical contexts, and also
offers a thorough examination of the performance of the tragedy, investigating topics such as stage action,
music, song and dance.
Thalia Papadopoulou is Assistant Professor of Classics, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

CHALLENGES TOTHE POWER OFZEUS IN EARLYGREEK POETRYNoriko Yasumura
In the earliest extant works of
Greek literature, Zeus reigns
supreme in the Olympian
hierarchy. However, scattered
and scanty though they may
be, there are allusions to
threats of rebellion which
challenge Zeus’ supremacy.
This book examines these
passages, drawn mainly from
Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey,
Hesiod’s Theogony and the Homeric Hymns, to offer some intriguing
new interpretations. Focusing on the themes of cosmic/divine and
generational strife, Noriko Yasumura shows that hints of lost legends
underlie these texts. Tracing their hidden logic helps to improve our
understanding of early Greek poetry. Throughout the book the texts and
fragments scrutinised and discussed are quoted both in Greek and in
the author’s accompanying English translation.
Noriko Yasumura is Professor of Classics, Kanazawa University,
Japan.

THE MYTH OFPAGANISMNonnus, Dionysus
and the World of Late
Antiquity
Robert Shorrock
With the adoption of
Christianity as the official
religion of the Roman world in
the fourth century AD, the
role of the poet underwent a
radical transformation. In
place of the traditional poet of
the Muses there emerged a
new figure, claiming
inspiration from Christ. This
established a conceptual framework that still drives modern approaches
to the period: Christian poetry is taken ‘seriously’; ‘pagan’ or ‘secular’
poetry is largely ignored. The Myth of Paganism re-evaluates the role of
‘pagan’ poetry in late antiquity. Attention focuses on an exploration of the
contemporary resonance of Nonnus’ Dionysiaca – traditionally regarded
as a ‘pagan’ epic in terms of its theme and content, yet in all probability
the work of a ‘Christian’ poet responsible for a Homeric-style retelling of
St John’s Gospel.
Robert Shorrock teaches Classics at Eton College, Windsor.

Evidence relating to the
‘real world’ of antiquity –
inscriptions, historiography
and legal speeches – has
dominated studies of
ancient Greek and Roman
slavery, although providing
few direct accounts by
slaves of their subjective
experiences. Yet the
imaginative fictions
produced by the ancient psyche in its literature and art provide many
representations and discussions of what it felt like to be a slave. This
volume provides a sustained discussion of the theory and practice of
handling ancient poetry and images in order to enhance our
understanding of the way that slavery was experienced by both slaves
and their owners in the ancient world. Twelve essays by an international
team of specialists develop a variety of theoretical positions, reading
practices and interpretive strategies for recovering the psychological,
emotional and social impact of ancient slavery from Homer, Aristotle,
Greek drama, visual images, Roman poetry and imperial Roman dream
interpretation.

RECONSTRUCTING THE SLAVEKelly L. Wrenhaven
Although the importance of slavery to Greek society has long been
recognized, most studies have primarily drawn upon representations of
slaves as sources of evidence for the historical institution, while there
has been little consideration of what the representations can tell us
about how the Greeks perceived slaves and why. Although historical
reality clearly played a part in the way slaves were represented,
Reconstructing the Slave stresses that this was not the primary purpose
of these images, which reveal more about how slave-owners perceived
or wanted to perceive slaves than the reality of slavery. Through an
examination of lexical, visual and literary representations of slaves, the
book considers how the image of the slave was used to justify, reinforce
and naturalize slavery in ancient Greece.
Kelly L. Wrenhaven is Assistant Professor of Classics, Cleveland State
University.

VIRGIL’SGARDEN
The Nature of
Bucolic Space
Frederick Jones
Virgil’s book of bucolic
verse, the Eclogues,
defines a green space
separate from the outside
worlds both of other
Roman verse and of the
real world of his audience.
However, the boundaries
between inside and outside
are deliberately porous.
The bucolic natives are
aware of the presence of
Rome, and Virgil himself is
free to enter their world. Virgil’s bucolic space is, in many ways, a poetic
replication of the public and private gardens of his Roman audience –
enclosed green spaces which afforded the citizen sheltered social and
cultural activities, temporary respite from the turbulence of public life,
and a tamed landscape in which to play out the tensions between the
simple ideal and the complexities of reality. Virgil’s Garden looks at the
Eclogues in terms of the relationship between its contents and its
cultural context, making connections between the Eclogues and the
representational modes of Roman art, Roman concepts of space and
landscape, and Roman gardens.
Frederick Jones is Senior Lecturer in Classics, University of Liverpool,
and the author of Juvenal and the Satiric Genre.

on the Roman Empire
Edited by
Sinclair Bell &
Teresa Ramsby
How did freed slaves reinvent themselves after the shackles of
slavery had been lifted? How were they reintegrated into society, and
what was their social position and status? What contributions did they
make to the society that had once – sometimes brutally – repressed
them? This collection builds on recent dynamic work on Roman
freedmen, the contributors drawing upon a rich and varied body of
evidence – visual, literary, epigraphic and archaeological – to
elucidate the impact of freed slaves on Roman society and culture
amid the shadow of their former servitude. The contributions span the
period between the first century BC and the early third century AD and
survey the territories of the Roman Republic and Empire, while
focusing on Italy and Rome.

FIGHTING HYDRA-LIKE LUXURYSumptuary Regulation in the Roman Republic
Emanuela Zanda
From the Old Testament to classical Rome, from the religious societies
of the Middle Ages to Elizabethan England, luxury has been morally
condemned. In Rome, sumptuary laws seemed the only weapon to
defeat ‘hydra-like luxury’, the terrible monster that was weakening even
the strongest citizens. Here Emanuela Zanda explores the reasons and
purposes behind the enactment of such legislation in Rome during the
Republic, placing it in a wider political and social framework. She
engages with the historical-literary polemic against luxury and focuses
on government intervention in matters of extravagance by taking into
consideration not only sumptuary laws but also other measures that
dealt with self-indulgence. She addresses and answers a number of
questions about the purposes that the ruling class was trying to achieve,
about its real motivations, and about the significance of the ideological
discourse surrounding the enactment of these laws.
Emanuela Zanda teaches Classics at Stockport Grammar School.

CTESIAS:ON INDIA Translation and Commentary
Andrew G. Nichols
A Greek doctor serving at the court of the Persian king Artaxerxes II in the fifth century BC, Ctesias
met travellers and visitors from the far eastern reaches of the Persian Empire, merchants from along
the Silk Road and Indians from near the Indus Valley. His Indika (On India), was the first monograph
ever written on India by a western author, introducing its readers to such fantastic creatures as the
unicorn and the martichora, along with real life subjects such as the parrot and the art of falconry.
Confirming pre-existing conceptions of what were considered to be the edges of the earth, Ctesias’
Indika helped shape the Greek view of India. Offered here for the first time in over a century is a full
English translation and commentary on all the extant fragments of the Indika, along with fragments of
Ctesias’ minor works never before translated into English.

CLASSICS ON SCREENAncient Greece and Rome on Film
Alastair A.L. Blanshard & Kim Shahabudin
Cinema loves Greece and Rome. Hollywood epics, animated movies,
avant-garde features – all have turned to classical antiquity for inspiration.
On the silver screen, we see a world of virtuous Christians, depraved
pagans, gladiators and muscle-bound demigods – a potent mix of sex,
violence and art. So pervasive are these images that this cinematic output
dominates the public understanding of the ancient world. Through analysis
of ten influential films, this book examines the representation of Greece
and Rome in popular and art-house cinema. Arranged by cinematic genre,
it offers an accessible introduction to the depiction of antiquity in cinema.
Alastair Blanshard is Senior Lecturer in Classics and Ancient History,
University of Sydney.
Kim Shahabudin is co-editor of Classics for All: Reworking Antiquity in

COSTUME IN GREEK TRAGEDYRosie Wyles
This is the first book-length survey of tragic costume to be published
for over forty years. The core of the book focuses on tragic costume
in its original performance context of fifth-century Athens, but the
implications of subsequent uses in Roman and more recent
performances are also taken into consideration. Most importantly, the
reader is invited to think about how tragic costume worked as a
language in ancient performance and was manipulated physically and
verbally in order to create meaning. Elements of this language are
shown through a series of test cases from a range of ancient
tragedies. All ancient passages are given in translation and the book
includes a glossary of terms.

EMOTION, GENRE AND GENDER INCLASSICAL ANTIQUITYEdited by Dana Munteanu
This tightly focused collection of essays analyses the degree to which
expressions of emotion in ancient literature and art become an
‘artistic’ rather than a ‘social’ construct. To what degree do literary
genres, philosophy and visual arts produce expectations for the
arousal of certain emotions? Are the emotions of women, for example,
represented differently in different genres? How and why do literary
genres and visual arts concentrate on specific emotions and stylise
them accordingly, and how do particular emotions relate to gender
within literary texts?

Egypt is by far the best-
documented province of the
Roman Empire. The dryness
of its climate means that an
enormous number of literary
and documentary papyri have
survived – a unique, reliable
and lively source that
documents Egypt in more
detail than any other Roman
province. Hitherto these have
not been used extensively by
Roman historians, on the
erroneous assumption that
Egypt is somehow ‘atypical’ as
a Roman province. However,
scholars now agree that Egypt should be devoted more attention by
anyone interested in the history of the Roman Empire. This book offers
a first approach to the subject, presenting a survey of the most important
aspects of life in the province under Roman domination, from the
conquest by Octavian in 30 BC to the 3rd century AD, as they emerge
from the micro-level of the Egyptian papyri and inscriptions, but also
from the ancient literary sources, such as Strabo, Diodorus and Philo,
and from the most important archaeological discoveries.
Livia Capponi is Lecturer in Ancient History, Newcastle University.

SPECTACLE INTHE ROMANWORLDHazel Dodge
This book offers an
introduction to the main forms
of spectacle in the Roman
world (human and animal
combat, chariot racing,
aquatic displays), their nature,
context and social
importance. It explores the
vast array of sources, from
literary to archaeological
material, that informs the
subject, examines the
spectacles with special
emphasis on their physical setting, and considers the variation in the
provision of venues and their context across the Empire.

ANCIENTPHOENICIAAn Introduction
Mark Woolmer
The Phoenicians played a
fundamental role in shaping
the history of the
Mediterranean. Lauded by
Homer as unrivalled
navigators and traders, they
founded colonies across the
length of North Africa and into
Southern Spain, yet as a
people they have often
remained an enigma. This
introduction aims to unravel
some of the mysteries
surrounding this ancient culture. Presenting the latest research and
archaeological discoveries, it explores the social, political, economic and
ecological changes that occurred in Phoenicia between the Early Bronze
Age and the start of the Hellenistic era. Phoenician government and
society, agriculture and economy, trade and colonisation, warfare,
religion, and art and architecture are all discussed in order to illustrate
the character and achievements of this vibrant civilisation, which was
able to maintain its unique identity and culture in the face of external
threats from states such as Egypt, Assyria, Babylon and Persia.
Mark Woolmer is Lecturer in Classics and Ancient History, Durham
University.

LATIN LANGUAGE TESTS FOR LEVELS 1, 2 & GCSEAshley Carter
This collection of tests provides practice for students preparing to take the new Latin language
examinations at the WJEC examination board Levels 1 and 2. It also includes tests similar to those used
in the OCR examination board GCSE examinations. The book is divided into five sections, each devoted
to a different format or level of tests. Words that are not expected to be known at each level are glossed.
The range of grammatical and syntactical features is similar to that found in the public examinations. The
tests are designed to cover translation and comprehension of specially constructed stories in Latin.
Users are not expected to have familiarity with any particular course book, and the stories may also be
used simply as a graduated Latin reader, if desired.

LATIN STORIESA Pre-GCSE Reader
Henry Cullen, Michael Dormandy
& John Taylor
Latin Stories is an ideal first reader for students of Latin. It offers 100 self-contained passages of manageable length, chosen for their intrinsic interest
and adapted from a wide range of ancient authors. Generous help is given, with a short introduction to each story and glossing of all proper names
and non-GCSE vocabulary. The collection will also be attractive to older students beginning or returning to the language. Section 1 provides 30
passages, starting with very short and simple stories and building up to the level of the current OCR GCSE paper Language 1. Section 2 provides 30
passages at the level of the GCSE paper Language 2, with its more demanding grammar and vocabulary requirements. Section 3 provides 40 longer
passages in the style of current GCSE papers, with comprehension questions as well as sections for translation: 20 for Language 1 (stories from
mythology or Roman life) and 20 for Language 2 (stories from Greek and Roman history).
Henry Cullen teaches Classics at Tonbridge School.
Michael Dormandy was until recently Head of Classics at Ashford School.
John Taylor is Head of Classics at Tonbridge School.

IN SEARCH OF THE ROMANSJames Renshaw
In Search of the Romans is a lively and informative introduction to
Roman history and society. Making extensive use of ancient sources and
illustrated with over 100 photographs, drawings, maps and plans, it
introduces six key areas of the Roman world: history, religion, society,
entertainment, Pompeii, and Herculaneum. Each chapter can be read
independently, although there are many cross-references and links
between each of them. There are also useful Appendices on the city of
Rome, Roman politics, currency values, clothing, and the calendar.
Review questions throughout the book challenge students to read further
and reflect on some of the most important social, political and cultural
issues of ancient Rome, as well as comparing them with those of their
own society. Essential reading for teachers and students of Classical
Civilisation, this book will also be of considerable interest to those
involved in drama and citizenship courses.
James Renshaw is Head of Classics at Colet Court and teacher of
Classics at St Paul’s School, London. He is the author of a companion
volume, In Search of the Greeks, also published by Bristol Classical Press.

FROM PLATO TO POSTMODERNISMThe Story of the West through Philosophy, Literature
and Art
Christopher Watkin
Bridging the gap between what is taught in schools and the cultural
knowledge required at university, this book gathers together the cultural
history of the West into one concise volume, Nearly four thousand years
of Western history come together in one unfolding story in which
philosophy, literature and art all reflect and shape the twists and turns
that have built today’s world, weaving its way from the West’s Greco-
Roman and Judeo-Christian origins through the Middle Ages,
Renaissance, Enlightenment and Romanticism to the postmodernism of
the twenty-first century. With the help of diagrams, illustrations and
timelines, terms like ‘gothic’ and ‘baroque’, ‘idealism’ and ‘the death of
God’ are explained and set in context, along with important names from
Aristotle, Abraham and Charlemagne to Michelangelo, Blake and
Derrida.
Christopher Watkin is Lecturer in the Department of French, University
of Cambridge.

ALCIBIADES AND THE SOCRATIC LOVER-EDUCATOREdited by Marguerite Johnson
& Harold Tarrant
In the Platonic work Alcibiades I, a divinely guided Socrates adopts the
guise of a lover in order to divert Alcibiades from an unthinking political
career. The contributors to this carefully focussed volume cover aspects
of the background to the work; its arguments and the philosophical
issues it raises; its relationship to other Platonic texts, and its
subsequent history up to the time of the Neoplatonists. Despite its
ancient prominence, its authorship is still unsettled; the essays and two
appendices, one historical and one stylometric, come together to
suggest answers to this tantalising question.
Marguerite Johnson is Senior Lecturer in Classics, University of
Newcastle, Australia.
Harold Tarrant is Professor of Classics, University of Newcastle,
Australia.

TAMING ANGERThe Hellenic Approach to the Limitations of Reason
Kostas Kalimtzis
Taming Anger is an important contribution to the study of emotion in the ancient world and today. From Homer to Aristotle, understanding anger and
harnessing its power was at the core of Hellenic civilization. Homer created the framework for philosophical inquiries into anger, one that persisted
until it was overturned by Stoicism and Christianity. Plato saw anger as the guardian of justice while Aristotle went further, conceiving of it as bound to
the logos of friendship. Yet both showed, in different ways, that anger, when not nurtured properly, could become the guardian of injustice and the
defender of psychological deformity. Though the philosophers sought ways to bring anger under the command of reason, they emphasized reason’s
limited ability to withstand the impulses of anger. The Greeks’ view of the emergence of anger in public life as an early warning sign of disease and
dissolution retains its importance to this day.
Kostas Kalimtzis is an independent scholar who took his PhD in Philosophy at the University of Florida.

TEN GIFTS OF THE DEMIURGEProclus on Plato’s Timaeus
Emilie Kutash
Proclus’ commentary on Plato’s Timaeus is perhaps the most important Neoplatonic commentary. In it
Proclus contemplates nature’s mysterious origins and at the same time employs the deductive rigour
required to address perennial philosophical questions. Nature, for him, is both divine and
mathematically transparent. He renders theories of Time, Eternity, Providence, Evil, Soul and Intellect
and constructs an elaborate ontology that includes mathematics and astronomy. He gives ample play
to pagan theology too, frequently lapsing into the arcane language of the Chaldaean Oracles. Ten Gifts
of the Demiurge is an essential companion to this rich but complex and densely wrought text, providing
an analysis of its arguments and showing that it, like the cosmos Proclus reveres, is a living coherent
whole.
Emilie Kutash is Lecturer in Philosophy, St Joseph’s College, New York.

ORDER FORM (PLEASE USE BLOCK CAPITALS)
ORDERING BOOKS FOR THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2011-12. Much of our backlist is now available by short-run printing, which enables us
to keep far more of the backlist consistently in print. Although the process of reprinting by this method takes only a few weeks, it is very helpful
to us if teachers can place their orders so that we receive them by the end of June at the latest for books required for the following
academic year – i.e. June 2011 for books required in September 2011. If that is done there will be no problem supplying the books, in the right
quantities, on time.
