BrisSUP Club Newsletter #11 Nov-Dec 2019 Event Photos President’s Report Ex-President’s Report Thank you for all your support over the past two years. I really enjoyed the time and it was a great pleasure to be attending almost every event hosted by our fabulous Club. I got to know so many more of you people and there were so many fun times. But it’s time to step down and let someone else take over the reigns – or should I say the paddle? I hope you all still like your 2019 club t-shirts with your names or nick names on it and wearing it with pride. And it is you being the reason why this fantastic club exists and is still going strong. Yes, we do have a few members that rarely show up at events, which is sad as I would love to paddle and catch up with them again The past 12 months were busy times for the club, and we had a lot happening. We had many interactions with the other SUP clubs and people start to know each other more and more. It is nice to be able to go north or south of Brisbane and be able to paddle with someone you have met before at any of the events or just through Facebook. We had an awesome year and thanks to all the sub-committees we had so well organised events. We had quite a few good training sessions thanks to Allen Hume. Also, thanks to Nathan and Pat who helped Allen whenever time allowed. The training sessions were a money- maker for the club too, at least until 30 th June this year when funding from the government stopped. At this stage it is uncertain if funding will be available for next year. The social committee was in full swing right from the beginning of the year and provided an excellent catering service at all our activities as well. They thought of some exceptional and varied places to paddle and I sincerely hope we’ll be heading up to Noosa again for a weekend paddle. Sadly, the paddle to Coochiemudlo Island in June had to be cancelled due to strong winds. But: safety first. I am sure we’ll be able to get over there during the Christmas break. Thank you, Andreas, Paula, Paul, Nellie and James. Our time trial groups are meeting regularly each week too: Tuesdays at Manly and Wednesdays at Enoggera Dam, with a few exceptions where we had to cancel due to the wind warnings. No time trials were held Upcoming Events Dec 2019 Saturday 7 th - Christmas Drinks at the Power House Friday 13 th - Christmas Light Paddle, Newport Friday 20 th - Christmas Light Paddle, Aquatic Paradise Check the Facebook page or our website for any other paddles you may be interested in. in the winter months because of the short days, but by mid-August everyone got restless to get back on the water.

If you haven’t tried it out, it’s fun and exercise and social – all in one short bit of time. I really can recommend attending it. I have now made it a habit to really leave the office on time on Tuesdays to be able to get to the time trials. So grateful to Dann, Paul, Bron and Scott for setting these up and for time keeping each week.

So far, we have done 5 WOWs for the year with the last one happening next week. Thank you, Mandi and Dann for organising them, following up with SQ the payment when registrations were stuffed up due to the new SQ website. Sadly, SQ advised that the government wouldn’t fund this initiative for 2020.

Our races were fun and sooo well attended, we had been featured in the SUPWorld Magazine with our first race this year, which was really challenging as you certainly can remember. The new format made the races really interesting and even I – although not a fast paddler – got third in the overall ranking for women. Just by sheer persistence, paddling the long-course and attending as many races as possible. But no chance for me to catch up to Tracey or Teej.

Not one race had to be cancelled due to adverse weather conditions – we were sooo lucky. Thank you, Mark, Brett, Allen and Nellie for organising these exciting races.

And last but not leas our feature race: Coochie Classic – it was a success, so many helping hands and no wind for the 2-hour window. Just perfect. We had members from 4670 SUP Club – from Bundaberg – coming down just for this race. Strong appearance from the Sunshine Coast SUP Club too and also the Gold Coast paddlers. The OC6 paddlers from Macleay Island were very grateful that we let them paddle too.

Robyn, who organised the competitor packs did an amazing job! Many emails between the promotional company and her until the final design was accepted. Yes, thank you all for helping to make this our feature race a success again. It is a lot of work beforehand but so satisfying seeing all committees working

together so well and all the additional volunteers stepping in, too.

We had some fantastic prizes by various donors, namely SurfFX, ONE Oceansports, Live Love SUP and Bote SUP and private individuals.

Many thanks to the outgoing executive committee members Dann Bailey, Meredith Jackson and Robyn Collins for their hard work over the past 12 months; I really appreciated and valued their opinions and comments and tremendously enjoyed making their company. Without them – and their partners (my husband included) – BrisSUP Club wouldn’t be in this great position as it is today. I am wishing Scott Collins, the new BrisSUP Club president all the best and lots of fun. The following people were voted into BrisSUP Club positions:

Scott Collins – President Dann Bailey – Treasurer Annette Burgess – Secretary Ilka Schoenefuss – Merchandise Co-ordinator

This is it from me for now. See you all on the water soon. Love you All

Paddle-Trip to Longreach

On September 21st, the inaugural Outback Paddle Regatta Festival was held on the Thomson River, Longreach. One of the organisers was club member Kel Sanson, who helped create and plan for the event over the last couple of years and the event funded under the Year of Outback Tourism Events Program during the Year of Outback Tourism 2019.

To show support for a fellow club member and for the Queensland Outback Community, a significant number of members decided to take some annual leave and head up for the festivities which included a 5km Social Race as well as a 10km Race on Saturday Morning.

It was a long drive and several different routes were taken, whether it be through Roma, Charleville, Carnarvon or Emerald, but everyone arrived safely by Friday 20th in preparation for the race the following morning. That preparation included a tour of the Thomson River for many of

us on Friday night followed by some lessons on the ways of the outback and a traditional stockmen’s meal.

We woke on race morning and were welcomed by a gentle 40km/h wind which meant that the first half of each race would be challenging to say the least.

The day started with the 10km race which included Dragon Boats, canoes, kayaks and OOC’s as well as a few of paddleboarders (that didn’t drop back to the 5km race). The wind was horrendous to paddle into for the first 5km of the race and at times the GPS trackers showed that there was not

forward movement at all. BrisSUP Training Committee Lead, Allen Hume proved to handle the conditions best and came away with a win in the SUP division with Scott Collins coming 3rd and Jason Anderson also completing the course.

The 5km Race was next and some paddlers decided to jump into a Dragon Boat, whilst several other club members took on the course with a 2.5km paddle into the headwind and back home with a relieving tailwind. Congratulations to Andreas Schoenefuss who took out the SUP line honours followed by Nellie Richter and then Club President, Ilka Schoenefuss.

Finally, later in the afternoon when the wind had settled, a promptly organised sprint knock-out competition was put together to showcase the SUP’s. The big fella, Kel Sanson took this out with a massive show of power paddling, followed by Scott Collins and Andreas Schoenefuss.

Overall it was a great adventure and highly recommended. Next year’s event is being help on September 20-21, so start making plans early.
