Brioche Stitched Wool Hat Supplies: Size 10.5 (6.5 mm) 16 in. circular needles. Size 8 (5.0 mm) 16 in. circular needles. (Fishermen's Wool gauge measured 3.75 st. per in.) Size 8 (5.0 mm) double pointed needles (dpn) Lion Brand Fishermen's Wool or equivalent worsted yarn. Instructions: Using the size 10.5 needles, CO 69 stitches (I used the Old Norwegian cast-on) Using the size 8 circular needles, K2tog joining both end stitches (68 st remain). Place marker, *K1, p1. Rpt * to end of row. Knit brioche foundation (rnd 1 brk) Knit brioche row 2 (brp) – {odd}. Knit brioche row 3 (brk) – {even}. Repeat Rows 2 & 3 to desired length. (I knitted 77 rnds for my hat). End with row 2 (brp) – {odd}. * K1, p1. Rpt * to end of rnd. Decreases: Ssk for 1 rnd switching to dpn (double pointed needles) this rnd. (34 st remain) K9, m1, k17, m1, k to end of rnd. Finish:

Cut yarn leaving at least a tail of 12 inches in length. Using a tapestry needle, work the tail through the remaining stitches as they are removed from the knitting needles. Weave any exposed yarn ends into the inside of the hat.

Abbreviations:K = Knit P = Purl k2tog = Knit two together p2tog = Purl two together SSK = Slip 1 knit-wise, Slip 1 knit-wise, insert left-hand needle through both stitches from left to right and knit them together M1 = make 1 stitch Rnd = roundRib = K1, P1 rib Wyib = With yarn in back (as if to knit)Wyif = With yarn in front (as if to purl)

Brioche K1 - P1 Stitch (in the round):Cast on an even number of stitches.

Row 1 (Setup Row): * K1, bring yarn forward as if to purl, slip 1 st purlwise, allowing yarn to make a sloppy diagonal loop over right-hand needle. Repeat from * to end of rnd.

Row 2 (brp): *Wyif, slip 1 st purlwise, yarn around needle, p2tog (the purl stitch and sloppy diagonal loop); repeat from * to end of rnd.

Row 3 (brk): * Move yarn to the back as if knitting, k2tog (the knit stitch and the sloppy diagonal loop), bring yarn forward as if to P, slip 1 purlwise allowing yarn to make a sloppy diagonal loop over right-hand needle. Repeat from * to end of rnd.

Repeat rows 2 and 3 to obtain desired length.

Note: Row 2 was the first of the my 77 rnds for the length in this pattern.

SSK Decrease:

SSK - (slip, slip, knit) - Slip one stitch knit-wise, slip the next stitch knit-wise, insert left needle straightinto slipped stitches, k both slipped stitches together. This will slant left.
