BRINGING MUSTANGS

The primary mission of the Mustang Heritage Foundation is to create and promote programs and activities that provide information and education about wild horses, elevate their image and desirability, provide opportunities to become involved in the wild horse experience and secure adequate numbers of caring homes for excess horses & burros. Working in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management, the Mustang Heritage Foundation is passionate about the successful placement of mustangs into private care so future generations can enjoy this distinctive feature of our American heritage.

2019 was an outstanding year for mustangs and the Mustang Heritage Foundation!

I would like to extend a special thank you to our trainers, fans, volunteers and staff, as well as the Bureau of Land Management, for the dedication and commitment to supporting mustangs and burros. Together, we were able to facilitate a record-breaking 2,670 mustang and burro placements for the fiscal year ending September 30.

I’m also excited to report that our trainer base continues to grow. We had more than 500 trainers across the United States assist in our mission of bringing mustangs home through our Extreme Mustang Makeover events in Lexington, Kentucky and Ocala, Florida; Mustang Magic; our Trainer Incentive Program and Veterans & Mustangs program.

Our success would not be possible without you. Whether you trained, gentled or adopted a mustang or burro; helped spread the word about our programs; made a monetary donation; or attended one of our events, thank you for your continued support.

Created and presented by the Mustang Heritage Foundation, the purpose of the Extreme Mustang Makeover competition is to showcase the beauty, versatility and trainability of American mustangs. Mustangs competing in these events are wild mares and gelding, typically four to seven years old, that have been living in BLM corrals. Approved trainers are paired with a mustang and spend approximately 100 days preparing for classes that will showcase the mustang’s new skills. At the conclusion of the event, all mustangs are available for adoption or purchase via public competitive bid.

The Trainer Incentive Program (TIP) is a successful training and adoption program that engages talented horse trainers nationwide. Approved TIP trainers gentle and halter train a BLM-branded wild mustang or burro, then market and find a new home for the animal. Once a home is approved by BLM, the TIP trainer is reimbursed up to $1,000 for their training and marketing services. The success of TIP led to the creation of TIP Storefronts, a program for trainers with facilities capable of receiving 20 or more animals into training at a time, and TIP Challenges, competitions that allow trainers to showcase the versatility of mustangs.

In 2008, MHF created its first event where youth received recognition and prize money for gentling and competing with yearling mustangs. This program has since expanded to several locations across the United States where knowledgeable and experienced individuals host youth and yearling competitions through the Trainer Incentive Program.

For the past six years, MHF has provided a hands-on opportunity aimed at helping active-duty military and veterans heal through gentling a wild mustang. The program uses the benefits and power of wild mustangs to provide a platform for change. In 2020, MHF will continue our goal of serving veterans and mustangs.

Mustang Magic Celebrity Freestyle is a one-night event featuring the best mustang trainers and entertainers in the country. Invited trainers have six minutes to entertain the crowd with their champion mustangs and best freestyle routine for a chance to win $25,000 in cash and prizes. This allows participants to perform with a BLM-branded mustang, along with other animals, people and props.

Since 2015, the America’s Mustang campaign has increased public outreach, education and involvement in the BLM Wild Horse and Burro Program.

America’s Mustang helps offer on-range, Eco-Sanctuary and off-range tours, as well as adoption and sales opportunities that allow the public to intimately experience the WH&B program.

The campaign also provides online education through an easy-to-use website where people can learn about the WH&B program and issues that face wild mustangs.

In 2017, MHF created a self-contained virtual reality trailer that allows the public to experience America’s Mustang in a way they never have before. The trailer travels across the United States to attend expos, conferences and sporting events in order to reach beyond the equine industry and educate the general public. The audience has the opportunity to watch educational videos and stand with wild horses through a VR headset experience.
