I am delighted to present the Presidentrsquos Report for season 2014-15 of Brighton Union Cricket Club

The committee has continued the hard work of the previous season and has taken the club for-ward on and off field We thank those that have contributed in achieving these goals both on and off the committee and special thanks to retiring committee members Niki Gaal Cyril Campbell and Phil Hope for their efforts

The club was able to comfortably field four sen-

ior XIs three junior sides and one rookie team made up of graduates of our Milo program Milo was once again a successful club initiative and this year we hosted T20Blast on a Saturday morning with six sides representing Brighton Union six being the highest in the region next best was three

Four sides made finals with three making it to the Grand Final Unfortunately the Under 16s and Thirds just missed out but the Fourths won on the last ball bring-ing a premiership back to Hurlingham Park (See report for match highlights)

Financially the club is in a good position to move forward with several long term sponsors and new sponsors on board already for 2015-6 The forecast is for 8 Jun-ior Teams and 4 Seniors in 2015-16

Off-field functions were well attended with both the $1000 day and presentation

day welcoming record numbers and new faces from our Junior parents One of the highlights of the year was the tribute night for David Wingfield and Noel Pullen - a full house sang the club song in tribute to both club legends

TheJack Vollugi nets are already in use by eager players young and old honing their craft during the winter chill while others have put their hand up for vacant committee positions - what can you do to help Brighton Union to be Facile Princeps

We look forward to the challenges of next season 2015-16 and we welcome any assistance that you can contribute to the ongoing success and future of the BRIGHTON UNION CRICKET CLUB

The club had another great sea-son financially We built on the strong position from the previ-ous year and are now looking to invest in the future of the club Highlights included

A club record income of

$92624 up 29 from the previous year which itself was a record year

A small surplus was

achieved for the year and as a result we were able to maintain our existing reserves at $45959 This gives us an oppor-tunity to invest in the future of the club as well as providing a buffer in case of difficult seasons

Sponsors again contributed almost 25 of our income and the club is very

grateful to all sponsors for their continued generosity and support

The club spent over $6000 in two new pitches for Hurlingham Park directly

from income A team of members lead by Paul Foster donated their time and expertise to install the pitches which would otherwise have cost over $12000 at normal commercial rates The club is very grateful to Paul and the team for their considerable effort over two full days to achieve an excel-lent result not only for the club but also the wider local community that makes good use of the pitches throughout the summer

Also thank you to Stuart Bell who was Treasurer until January 2015 when

he moved to Amsterdam on a work assignment

The U18 Arnold Shield

Many players have had the honour of playing repre-sentative cricket but very few have had the honour of having an actual representative shield named after them

In season 2014-15 Phil Arnold (pictured left) received one of the highest honours bestowed in junior cricket in Victoria when the Victorian Metropolitan Cricket Union named the U18 representative competition lsquoThe Arnold Shieldrsquo

This honour recognises Phil for his lsquohalf a lifetimersquo of devotion to furthering representative junior cricket in Melbourne

Phil is a life member of the Brighton Union Cricket Club and is currently the Treasurer of the club one of many roles he has held in 34 years as player coach and ad-ministrator

He is on the Executive of the South East Cricket Associ-ation and currently heads up the U12 talent develop-ment and representative programs of SECA

Phil is still heavily involved in junior coaching and de-velopment at Brighton Union and we congratulate him on the honour and recognition he received in 2014-15

Brighton Union Fourths team defeated Cluden to win the 2014-15 J grade premiership Union secured a dramatic final over victory by one run on the second last ball

The victory was setup by tight bowling Lead by Tomas Di Carlo with 517 the quartet of Kyle Dunstan Clive Finklestein and Jonno Powell each bowled their maxi-mum overs The bowlers focussed on good length and controlled line all year The tight bowling won the game The lack of extras gave us the opportunity

Win the toss and Bat

Earlier the batting effort accumulated 124 runs On paper this could look like a lower than desired score and the feeling amongst the team after day 1 hellip it was As Cap-tain the single outcome of winning the toss and batting first was achieved ldquoRuns on the board are goldrdquo advice echoed from Union tactical support advisors Purvis and Ar-nold It was a gruelling 45 overs Gun spearhead opening bat Kristian Petersen and I opened the innings The plan was to re-enact the 85 run opening partnership we formed against Cheltenham Park in November Cricket is an easy game We planned to stay in until tea waiting for the loose deliveries Not playing any high risk shots In the second over KP received ldquothe best ball Irsquove ever facedrdquo from Cluden speedster Sam Lielups The ball targeted full and outside off stump KPrsquos front foot went well across to position Late swing in allowed the ball to strike his foot The batters worked hard The score did not reflect the intensity of the struggle Clive Finklestein came in at number 3 Defending defending waiting for the loose ball The SECA J Grade statistically best bowler Andrew Green was consistently out swinging the ball Clive edged and was caught at second slip by Cludenrsquos coach Rich-ard Laidler Lachy Morris joined myself and we forged a partnership Coming in at 25 off 5 overs we worked hard A rash drive resulted in a skied ball to mid off Mid on and mid off converged and a dropped catch The day had turned our work was to pay off today will be our day however the next over Lachy edged a Green swinger and was caught behind by reliable Cluden starting wicket keeper Tim Wise Now we were 317 off 15 overs Quite a struggle Should we stay patient and defensive Will the loose balls start to come

Brad Tansey joined me in the middle Brad had made a century 3 games prior and was in good form Loose balls did start to come with the resting of Lielups and Green Brad and I nudged the score along from 17 to 33 Brad was looking good but hit a catch to Sam Lielups off Ben Zosens bowling Brad wasnrsquot sure if it was the Zosens pace or bounce that resulted in his aired shot The earlier plan was to bat through to tea before Tansey and Dunstan can come in and unleash their run scoring magic After 24 overs we had Tansey out Kyle in and wersquore 433 Kyle scored freely Together we followed the plan and worked hard We pushed the score along from 33 to 46 Ben Zosen was accumulating a healthy wide count but then managed to squeeze one past Kylersquos bat and hit the midpoint of the two wide creases Now with 6 overs to tea we were 446 Josh Clyne joined his dad and a cher-ished partnership began We batted through to tea and the break were 463 After the break Sam Lielups returned and in the third over after the break got one through Josh Bowled The partnership was 19 runs and the score 565 The partnerships were building with 13 16 amp 19 an improvement but we needed a considerable partner-ship to take the score through to the targeted 200 Enter Lachie Clyne Lachie batted sensibly and aggressively His innings transformed the performance of the team The flamboyant 15 year old carved spearhead Lielups around the park Boundaries that had not looked possible earlier became a reality Together we put on 25 additional runs and the partnerships continued to build statistically but we just needed one key partnership

Having achieved my first goal of batting through to tea I then hit a short ball through mid wicket However contact wasnrsquot made with the bat and I didnrsquot turn to see the rattle of stumps At 790 the hope of a key partnership might not eventuate Enter Jonno Powell Jonnorsquos fighting quality was demonstrated when he opened the batting in the earlier final against Cluden Jonno and Lachie worked well togeth-er They built the innings high partnership of 33 taking the score to 123 Lachie scored freely and was well supported by what is now Jonnorsquos famous finals trademarkhellip a gutsy and gritty innings playing to the team plan Great effort guys Lachie took on one shot too many from Sam the Spinner Spicuglia We could not continue to build the partnerships After being 8123 we were all out for 124 Charlie Irvine couldnrsquot find the previous run scoring form Tom DiCarlo came in and made an important run pushing the score from 9123 to 124 Jonno was left not out at the other end Having come in when the score was 90 Jonno held together the key partnership with Lachie Clyne Well batted The total of 124 was not a huge score to defend The mood was down but not out We had the runs The premiership was there to win Statistically Cluden averaged 220 runs per innings all year (compared to our 165) Four Cluden batsman averaged over 40 (compared to our one Wayne Jones who was playing in the 3rds grand final and not even in the team) We had some work to do

Defending 124 to Win the Premiership

The equation 62 overs 10 wickets less than 124 runs Kyle and Clive bowled 3 overs each at the end of the first day Brad Tansey suggested we sneak in an over from the 5th bowler and we did The learning from the previous week was that the bowler restriction reset after the first 55 overs of the innings At that point we didnrsquot realise how our experience the previous week was going to work in our favour At stumps on day 1 Cluden were 013 needing an additional 112 runs Cluden lost wickets in clusters of mini collapses An early partnership of 20 was broken when Taylor was bowled 120 and we needed 9 more wickets Tim Wise had score 10 and 5 against us previously in the season despite averaging over 40 Kyle Dunstan continued to be on top and trapped him LBW for 5

Tom Di Carlo was fresh to surprise the in form Sam Lielups who hit 65 against us in the Semi Final He also was averaging 65 since the January break Lielups was the big wicket we needed and the game was evenly poised Tom bowled fast and straight Lielups was tense His bat thumped the crease as Tom ran in to bowl The tension translated to bottom his hand which forced a forward defen-sive shot to rebound in the air The dive one hand extended catch and then roll from Tom resulted in the wicket At this point we knew we were on top and we should win but needed to continue to concentrate and play well

Enter the next batsman but before any additional runs the dangerous Richard Laidler was caught by a great Tom Spottiswood catch Tom was sensational in the field He dived low to his right and stuck the chance with two hands To win we needed to catch well and Tom lead by example

Ben Zosens came in and hung around The bowling was tight No extras were given away The field-ers were supporting the bowlers All 14 players were focussed ad committed Zosens too was caught by Tom Spotiswood This was a skied chance that Tom had to sit under and he made no mistake From 2 42 Cluden lost three wickets and Brighton Union were on top with the score at 545 Ian Fiket was starting to build an innings His pre Christmas average was 496 He was joined by Cludenrsquos captain Troy Beard Two weeks earlier we witnessed Beard build a 120 run partnership for the 9th wicket Cluden value every wicket and the game was on

Beard and Filket started to build a partnership We knew were to bowl and were to place the field Runs were hard to score Jonno bowled well and held up an end in a long spell of bowling At the tea break we had a team talk and benefited from some wisdom from the team coach Neil Vorbach Neil re-minded us to introduce the 5th bowler We opted to split this amongst two people We wanted to bowl Charlie Irvinersquos spin but with Beard Filkert and Sam Spicuglia to come the risk of a single over score blowout could tilt the balance back to Cluden Lachy Morris suggested we bowl KP KP was coming back from the 3rds and Cluden had not seen his outswingers In the eyes of the opposition KP was seven feet tall

KP didnrsquot disappoint and bowled like the demon bowler re-turning from the higher grade for a cameo appearance in the Grand Final We were all pretty happy with the high ratio of balls within 30cm of the off stump

At the other end my practice paid off and the body held together allowing 3 additional overs (not a typo) After the 48th over the restrictions were re-set Welcome back Kyle Tom Di Carlo

The period from tea until stumps was the most intense and enjoyable cricket Irsquove been a part of Cluden fought back with great composure and determination

Beard was trapped by Di Carlo for a well made 14 Filket fell 3 runs later and Cluden were 771 still needing 54 runs Spicuglia and Green (also not a typo) took the tally through to 120 and Cluden looked on the brink of an upset victory The 50 run partnership was by far the biggest of the match We needed a third mini collapse In the words of Paul Kelly ldquoThey say the dark-est hour is right before the dawnhelliprdquo

The ClimaxhelliphellipThree wickets needed Cluden needed 5 runs to win I walked up to Tom DiCarlo and Tom said to me ldquoItrsquos OK I have a plan I know what Irsquom doingrdquo Recordings of Wes Hall and Garfield Sobers sprung to mind Luckily we hadnrsquot bowled any bouncers all day and we were not about to start Tom ran in Spicuglia hit it hard to mid on caught by Charlie Irvine 8120 In comes the junior Lachlan Jaboor The pressure is back on Green 2 more runs takes Cluden to 122 By now Cluden are running out of overs Green has the form Tom runs in Like Fleming to Salim Malik to get a hat trick on debut in 1994 Tom bowls a gentle outswinger Only the ball is now 60 overs old Green edges caught by Morris 9122 The tension builds Jaboor edges a single one to tie two to win The No 11 is Adrian Par-ker Tom bowls many wicket balls all at the stumps Parker defends The stale-mate builds With an over to go Jaboor is on strike Kyle Dunstan was reportedly feeling ldquoFully Confident Wanting to Wrap this uprdquo Although other reports were rumoured Dot Dot Dot Kyle started the ball outside leg and let the out swing bring the ball back onto the stumps The field positions were well thought out We didnrsquot want to miss the run out like the Sydney Sixers who broke the stumps without controlling the ball The field position matched Only we had Kyle Dunstan and the poor Sixes only had Brett Lee

Dot again now two balls left Lachlan Jaboor has batted well Parker is stuck at the other end On the fifth ball Dunstan bowls again to the plan full on leg stump Jaboor calls ldquoYesrdquo Brad Tansey is at mid on he fields throws overarm with pace to Kyle Dunstan who breaks the stumps with the ball and the umpire confirmshellip Brighton Union Premiers

The result 615 overs10 wickets 123 runs - Brighton Union Win by 1 Run

David Wingfield passed away on Monday 23 February 2015 aged 72 A memorial was held in the club rooms and his family released balloons after scattering his ashes on Hurlingham Park

David Wingfield mdash The Early Years

I met David when I was a little boy aged around 6 as he and my family had just moved into Kendall Street Hamp-ton

Whilst we didnrsquot really play together much because he went to the State school and I to the Catholic school our parents were good friends and we did talk a lot to each other

I played my early cricket with East Sandy Under 16s and then

later at Hampton whilst David played at Hampton Church of Christ and later Cochrane before he joined Brighton Union

I got a job that transferred me to the country as a 16 year old and when I returned to Hampton as a 20 year old I want-ed to continue to play cricket and my dad saw Davidrsquos mum on the bus and told her what I wanted to do and suggested I go and have a talk to David which I did and thatrsquos when I joined Union 50 years ago and cemented my relationship with the great man

We had often talked about our final days and what would happen to us after death We both came to the same conclu-sion that we would like our ashes scattered on Hurlingham Park ndash well mate you have got there before me ndash so keep an eye on the boys

I mention here that David was responsible for the Club pro-

ducing quality annual reports for the first time and over the years when we enquired about the bill over the years there never was one

David and I had a lot in common not only sharing accommo-dation but being ldquoone-eyedrdquo Bomber supporters

We would regularly travel out to Windy Hill in his red Mustang and stay to all hours after the match and to this day I think he just put the car on automatic pilot to get us home safely He would always be abusing the umpires calling them white rabbits ndash he had to give that away in later years when they donned all the various colours

Another annual event was the Boxing Day sojourn to the MCG for all the boys This was back before Boxing Day Test matches when the highlight of the festive season was the annual Victoria v New South Wales Sheffield Shield match Naturally back then we took our own supply of beverages and Josie would always make some wonderful sausage rolls for our lunch

We were both avid race goers and regularly went to the track with our great mates Kevin and Jim McNally We would always throw in $50 each for the quadie When we missed it we would always blame Winger Howev-er last Christmas David got a $50 tab gift voucher which he deposited into his last quadie and believe it or not it came up trumps As Macca said ldquoWell our mate went out on a winnerrdquo Talking about annual events our trips to Avoca and district over the New Year Period for social cricket matches etc mdash it was always so hot mdash were legendary Winger was the star attraction and it is wonderful that messages of condolences have been received from the Avoca people following Davidrsquos death after so many years have passed since our trips

One thing about Winger was his great ability to encourage and

interact with young people although he was from a very different generation

Since his death and before there have been so many that have told me this including Nick Jewell Jason Parsonage Simon Williams Kivanc Cevik and Lochie Morris

One of his very special mates was the late Greg Gorozidis Winger used to fondly re-member late nights in the club rooms and after at a local hotel enjoying the company of Greg and others

Something you might not know about Winger was that he had an outstanding general

knowledge of many subjects particularly the Royal family and movies music etc

We used to regularly watch Eddie McGuirersquos ldquoMillionaire Hot Seatrdquo and when Winger would generally get the answers right on those issues I would say thatrsquos because you are a royalist and watch TV all day Both those assertions by me were wrong and I only did it to annoy him

Anyway we decided to try and get on the show and to do that you ring a phone number and to our surprise you immediately get around 6 general knowledge questions that you have to answer in about 10 seconds each I thought I did pretty well getting 4 right however my old mate got a different set questions and got 100 right That was around 6 months ago and then David got a letter in December (I didnrsquot) inviting him to the taping of a show on 21 January this year however he was too ill to attend and I have no doubt he would have done very well and possibly be the first Million Dollar hot seat winner

Winger has been given many nicknames at the Club over the years ndash he used to say ldquoIrsquoll answer to anythingrdquo and one of them was ldquoShawrdquo ndash I wonrsquot bore you with how that came about

David passed away on Monday 23 February and on Saturday 28 February all the people wore black armbands at the cricket and small ceremonies were held As it was Winger proved an inspiration to all four senior sides on that day as they won and the call that went around the club continuously on that night of ldquoFOUR for SHAWrdquo

The function the Club held for David on 31 January attended by so many

people he was so proud of He told me on the Saturday morning two days before his death that when he left the building on that night to be given the send off he got as he walked below a guard of hon-our comprising of members holding cricket bats was one of his proudest moments at our great club

The Club named the Senior Club Award after David in 1993 A new shield has recently been made which covers a history of David at the Club and the Clubrsquos wonderful secretary Niki Gaal has recommended that we install a plaque in the new rooms indicating that Davidrsquos ashes are scatted at Hurlingham Park

Back in 1994 the Club launched a new Best Clubman award in the name of Greg Gorozidis David sat in the front row at the launch and a song was played at that

launch which brought David to tears The same song was also played at Davidrsquos memorial service as it also sums up David

David you were a great son brother husband father

grandfather and great friend that will be sadly missed

No words I could say or ever say as to how much we miss you every day

The tears in our eyes will disappear but the memories of you will always stay

Rest in peace mate I believe we will meet again and

memories are treasures that time cannot destroy

Each year the club year book which incorporates the annual report aims to continue Noelrsquos great work in document-ing the history of the club for future generations of cricketers
