Transcript of Brighton & Hove Community Radio - SSDAB & Community Radio: Past, Present, & Future
The Beginnings of BHCR 2010
We have presenters, cover events, run outside broadcasts, run training groups and target marginalised people
Responsible Radio
Brighton and Hove Community Radio will give an open and responsible community radio service to provide as many areas of the community as possible including multi ethnic and marginalized people with music and voice
BHCR presenters come from all walks of life. There is real focus on enhancing people’s lives by giving them a voice in the community that the advance in modern technology has allowed.
TRAINING• The provision of sound broadcasting to individuals who
would otherwise be underserved• The facilitation of discussion• The provision of education or training• The better understanding of the particular community and
strengthening links with it• Brighton & Hove Community Radio is syndicated with
Green Futures Festivals Radio working together to provide Education, Training and Social Gain for the community, in particular, underserved children and adults
• Brighton & Hove Community Radio is intended to give opportunities to give a voice for the people by the people
SOME OF THE PEOPLE WE TRAIN
Radio Euro-Mernet broadcast online at 2pm, on Thurs which is the usual time for the weekly show. The hour-long show informs the local community about international events, local news, and provides space and freedom of speech to the local community groups so as to let them have their voice heard on air.

Christian Holder “ Good training and has helped me to think about what I am presenting but I need more “
“At the moment it allows me to express my poetry” Geoff Tabrah
“Your radio allows the spoken word to reach people that may not normally listen to poetry “Alana McIntyre
• The radio station environment• “When I first walked into the community radio station at
the Brighthelm Community Centre last week, I was not expecting to find such a small and vital environment. Yet, the room was on the lower ground floor and space was quite packed. There were wall to wall pictures of both young and elderly volunteers whose moments of action were captured during their live radio shows, all with a big smile on their faces. All around there were memories, bits and pieces of their projects and many papers of past events. What a colourful and vital room for a Radio Station!
• The technical arrangements seemed to me very well organised, and as I entered the room, one of the Euromernet volunteers kindly invited me to take a seat.”
Internet Radiowww.bhcr.org.uk
• We are an internet radio with a very simple studio set up which we deliberately designed for people with disabilities to be able to use
• We would love to be FM and DAB but do not have the techies or resources to set this up alone
• We have trained people who have gone on to commercial radio, FM and other media places
How could other stations help?• If there was a way of sharing resources such as
technical staff to set up myriad systems, update equipment already in use with advice and wisdom in funding that would help.
• If there were people to keep us updated in what is happening digitally e.g DAB, media law and collaboration opportunities this would help too.
• If there was a way of sharing some of the costs that would give opportunity for more listeners and a voice to a much needed marginalised community of presenters.
Outside Broadcast Projects
• Our aim is to bypass barriers put up by the conventional digital world and us ‘ready ‘ media to channel information and therefore reach a far wider audience.
• Ready media being mobiles, tablets, community tv, social media, podcasting, skyping and many others
• We are also aware that digital media is changing and therefore we want to be in the vanguard of this transformation
We are not alone out there!
Check us out!
