MAUNDY THURSDAYOn Maundy Thursday the church remembers the last evening Jesus shared with his disciples in the upper room before his arrest and crucifixion. To-night, we are marking this special event with a rather non-traditional offer-ing. Bright Came the Word From His Mouth is a musical retelling of the grand story of redemption. Beginning with creation and winding through the Old Testiment and into the New, well hear the beautiful, compelling story of Gods covenant faithfulness to humanity. We have provided this booklet to help you follow the narrative as you reflect on the words.

  • 1. OVERTURE

Gather, all you who will hear of the God slain for his childrens sin.Come, the story recall, all he has done to bring his family home.

The overflowing holy heart of God begat a world of goodAdams treason echoes still and lays the children in the ground

Waves of sin rose high and wide, Noah listened through the noiseA voice like many waters surged up through death will come new birth

Abram held the promise close, raised the blade above his headA son will surely give his life; know the promise breaks the knife

By now Egypt like a grave, held a captive people slavesMoses thru the waters walked and God made Israel his own

Israel a enthroned a son, David sang Im just a manThe only King wholl win this war is crowned above the cherubim

The virgin mother out of breath, birthed the Word who dwelt in fleshMercy showed the world a face, Jesus punished in our place

Let His song fill the skies, Edens reprise: God and man home again.Gather, all you who will hear of the God slain for his childrens sin.Come, the story recall, all he has done to bring his family home.

  • 2. OH EDEN!

Oh tell me the tale, O my Father of the Garden that lit up the East; How the God of our people created the world and said that it is good.

Sing me the song of the Spirit who brooded the birth of the earth. The voice of the seas and the sunlight rang clean out across the meadows.

Oh Eden! Unbroken hearts in the heart of our God.Our Father, our Maker, loved from the dawn of the world.

    My heart breaks to hear the old story, I ache with the call of my home,For the beauty of God and the love that we had, Ive heard that it was good.But my brokenness flames up before me, this treasonous heart bent in toil;

The sword of the truth cleaves the branch from the root, my soul is lost in sorrow.

Oh Eden! Our treason has fed us the fruit of decay. Our Father, we hunger for bread that will not pass away, not pass away.

So the daughters and sons of the Father wander now, naked and shamed. The blessings reversed by the thorn of the curse, creation mourns it still.

But a promise sped out like the morning, Bright came the word from his mouth:

A son would be born and the curse be undone, give flight to fallen sparrows.

Oh Eden! We have been working to make our own name. Our Father we have so shadowed your image in shame.

  • All things made good, all things so broken now.God ever true, ever we hope in you.

  • 3. LET GO THE FLOODGATES

Oh no, Noah, look how bad its got.Aint nothing but evil in the hearts of men,

Aint nothing in the roots but rot.Come on, Noah, its time to send a flood.

Wash away the evil and start again,Noah time to build an ark.

Let go the floodgates, unmake the mess that we made.Pour out your judgment, ready the world to be saved.

Long time coming, sin had multipliedNobody to listen to the voice of God,

Nobody who even tried.Come on Noah, bring em two by two,

Preach about the rain to the dry of heart,But the word will not get through.

A world made good, a world unmade, a world to be remade.

Clear the pathway, make an open roadGod is stepping onto the scene again

With a plan to save our souls.Waters dried up, rainbows in the sky,

Lord is gonna deal with the death of menSo men no more shall die.

  • 4. FATHER WITHOUT A CHILDAbram, leave your life and go to a land I will show you.

A nation be born to sing a Kingdom song, a blessing for all mankind.

Youre a Father without a child, Im a Father whos lost his children.Follow me, Abraham, I will bring them, bring them home.

    Faith is wearing thin, Lord, hopelessly barren for years now.We laughed just to hide the tears the years have dried;

    when will the son arrive?

Im a Father without a child, Youre a Father whos lost his childrenLord, I am in your hands. Can we bring them, bring them home?

While Abraham slept in covenant darkness,With faithfulness crowned, the God of love moved;Poured out the blessings and shouldered the curse,

He signed on the line by the ink of his blood, ink of his blood.

Hear the Father of all cry out, see a son laid upon the altar; One day the knife will fall just to bring them, bring them home.

  • 5. OPEN YOUR EYESOpen your eyes to the light of the face of the faithful God,Hell make good on the promise He made to your fathers.

Abraham and Isaac and Jacobs Great RewardWill deliver you from the hand of your captors.

You belong to God, a people for his fame, do the world may know His name.Be no more a slave, leap up from your grave,

Take your place, my people, in the Presence of the God Almighty to save.

Believe me, Moses, when I tell you I am the only King,So you can march right up to that throne like you own it.And tell that Pharaoh to his face he better let them go,

But if he wants a fight then thats what hell get.

Put the blood of a lamb, child of Abraham, on your door tonight,And the angel of death will pass you over.

Pack your bags and fix your eyes on the coming dawnAnd leave the yoke of Egypt behind you.

See the mountain in flame as the Holy Name descends in smoke.Let the voice that shakes the earth remake you.

Remember how you all escaped when he split the sea;On his mighty wings, how Yahweh bore you.

  • 7. EVERLASTING SHEPHERD

I am old now, but I remember as a boy how I wrestled with the lion,How Goliath bared his teeth just like a beast

And mocked the Lord Almighty.I recall, still, the gentle coolness of the water,

How it wore the stones to smoothnessAnd when Samuel poured the oil, I heard the heart of Yahweh calling.

King of Israel, reign upon the throne of my heart. And every knee will bow even though the nations rebel.

Oh Everlasting Shepherd, the world sings,Yours is the kingdom now and ever!

    6. THE PEOPLE OF GOD

Come I am Yahweh, your God, Ruler of the universe.Your cries did not go unheard, You are not fatherless.

I brought you out of the house of your slavery,Come unto me all you weary.

Once you were not a people: now be the people of God.Once you did not know mercy: know now the mercy of God.

You shall have no other gods, there is no one else but me.Serve me with all of your heart and see your hearts made free.

Have I not loved you with covenant faithfulness?Take on the yoke of my mercy.

Peace in the place where you dwell, safe in the home of God.Each word I speak is your life, by them youll live or die.

Heaven and earth ever stand as my witnesses,I will be rest for the burdened.

Remember the Blood of the Covenant, hide all these words in your heart.

You are my holy ambassadors, you are the people of God.

  • Who am I, Lord, that heavens maker would be mindfulOf the last in line for battle,That youd hear the songs of pasture and of praiseAnd call upon your servant?May your Kingdom be the song housed in my body,Though I see my sin before me,In your loving-kindness let this house endure, oh King Almighty.

Im a shepherd, but I have wandered like sheep, Let my hungry eyes lose sleep,Gladly made my bed a den of thieves, still you did not leave me.I am crumbling as my house decays around me.I am humbled by your promise,I knew the crown was never mine to keep, oh Holy Shepherd

  • 8. WHERE I AM YOU MAY ALSO BE

Sin has broken us and the flaming sword of exile burns all our hopes to dust.Still the prophecy, sounding clear but strange: I know the plans that I have for you.

There will come a King and though he sow in tears, a buried hope will grow green again. THAT WHERE I AM THERE YOU MAY ALSO BE...

Hear the prophet call in the wilderness, Prepare the way for your King is come.Born of Davids line, Son of Abraham, God in flesh come to dwell with us.

See the Spirit poured to anoint the Christ, the Fathers heart is well pleased with him. THAT WHERE I AM THERE YOU MAY ALSO BE...

So the table set with the fruit of years, the Lords long work of redemption see.Hear the Lamb of God, Lord and sacrifice, Behold my blood of the covenant.

Trouble surely comes, but when my work is done Adams lost will be found again. THAT WHERE I AM THERE YOU MAY ALSO BE...

  • 9. REDEMPTION

Lot was in a dungeon bound, no chance he could escapeFrom enemies too strong for him, all hope for life was gone.

But the Father of the house called his family to armsTill the battle sword was sheathed and he was saved.

Ruth by bitter chance enslaved at the margin of the town.Griefs her grave had overfilled, her life was best unfound. But a man stood upright, made a homeless girl his wife,

Till the barren hopes she bore, they birthed a king:

    Redemption

Prophet take a prostitute and love her as your wife. She will make her vows to you, each a vow shell break.

Thirst for lovers drank her dry, drowned in debt she would have diedWhen Hosea paid the dowry for his bride:

    Redemption, Redemption

So the Father sends his only son to ransom all he lostFrom enemies too strong for them, from the poverty of loss.

In the squalor of the pit, where the willing faithless sitTo the depths the love of God has sent his Word:

  • 10. THIS IS OUR TESTIMONY

This is our testimony, we were all slaves and helpless. The True God heard and acted: He overcame our captors.

Though we could offer nothing, still he has made us each his own.

O my Soul remember this: How he loved you, how he saved you, how he freed you and forgave you!

Your Redeemer ever lives:Ever holy, ever faithful, the Lover of our souls.

Let each heart live in witness, had Christ not died to purchase,We would not be a people, could not have known his mercy.

The Lord has tabernacled, the Risen King will dwell with man.

And as he makes us holy, in love our hearts with joy obeySo that the world may know him, a world enthralled by darkness.

Their captive hearts will wonder, finding their freedom in his Face.

    11. KINGDOM COME

Jesus, the second Adam. Jesus, praise the LambJesus, the greater Noah, saved us from the flood of wrath.

Oh Jesus, Seed of Abraham,I have heard a better word on the mountain of the Lord,

That a king will sit on Davids throne forever.

Let your family on earth abideIn the house of our hearts be welcome,

Till the King returns and all the earth will...Open their eyes

to the light of the face of the Faithful God

Kingdom is like a wheat field, growing up with weeds.Kingdom is like a small seed, sending branches to the sky.

Unseen the yeast will raise the bread. One day when the heavens part and the Lamb of God rides forth,

Bodies borne of faith will rise to meet him.

  • 12. EDENS REPRISE

See the people of God, pure as a bride dressed on her wedding day.Christ, the aeons astride, makes of the skies His holy Kings highwaySing the praise of our God, maker of all, now making all things new.

Rest your sword by your side, fling the gates wide! At ease, you cherubim!Dance, you city of God, trees clap your hands, God and man home again.

Every tear wiped that day, death passed away, all of creation rests. Here no sea and no night, River of Life washes our wounds away.

Feast, your five senses freed, you who faith kept, take from the Tree of Life.Ever worship our God, Father and Son, Spirit, forever one.

We, your family have come, won by Your Son, ever to dwell with You.

All things made good, all things were broken soGod ever true, finally at home with You.
