”Cheek had a vision of a huge stadium concert and a catwalk, our job was to help him make it real. The first thing we did was to grab some pen and paper and draw a few sketches.

The goal was to create a production that didn’t come second to the international stadium concerts seen in Finland. Because the dimensions were this exceptional, the design process turned into a kind of research defining the meaning of huge. The visual design required a lot of time – it was started ten months in advance.

We designed the stage, the lighting, the video and created some pyrotechnical outlines. When all the technical questions were solved and adapted to the artistic view, we started up with pre-programming and pre-visualisation, which has an enormous role in a project like this. As far as we know, things this big had last been made during the Helsinki Eurovision Song Contest in 2007.

Mikko and our graphic designer Väinö Toppinen created also some video material that was played on LED screens during the show. It combined Cheek’s music videos, graphics,

animation and live feed. Cheek is an exceptional artist, who has a lot of vision and understanding of its execution. We even created the show

design and choreography with him, without the help of choreographers normally used in projects this size.

All that was left to be done at the stadium were some minor adjustments, so an old saying of well planned being half done was true to the point. The two concerts demonstrated what Finnish professionals are made of. We are all entitled to be more than proud of the magic we

created.”

Rap it up! THe Helsinki OlyMpic sTadiuM witnessed Finnish music history in August as Cheek, the top rapper of the country, filled the arena with his impressive show. Two nights and a total audience of 80 000 marked a record of its kind. “This was the biggest show ever made for a local artist in Finland. One thing was clear from the beginning: to forget about the traditional measures and create a spectacle of an international level,” state Jyrki Hytti and Jarno Uusitalo from Bright

Finland Ltd, a service provider that together with the visual design company Visual45 Ltd gathered a hundred professionals to execute the gigantic entertainment experience.

”Quit the money talk, it ruins my vision.”

– Eero Helle, Visual45 Oy

Rap it up!

TecHnical iMpleMenTaTiOn OF THe sTage production Manager Mikko Makkonen Bright Finland ltd

”I turned the stage design into reality by creating an actual implementation plan and making sure that all the solutions were technically possible to be conducted. I made a list of every little detail we needed in order to build the stage, gathered the crew for the job and supervised the whole project to make sure everything ran smoothly.

When talking about international stars, the budgets are divided between dozens of stadium shows. Cheek had only two shows, which ruled out all the custom-made structures, except for the four large diamonds, a trademark of the artist. Finding and gathering up all the rental structures requires a vast network.

The stage stretched a massive 60 metres in width and included four 24-metre-tall delay towers with follow spot platforms, 240 metres of truss and 90 rigging points. An English partner provided us with toasters and lifts, an essential part of the show design used in quick entries and exits. This way we were able to create some special surprises otherwise rare to Finnish productions.

The building of the stage started a week before the big day. I kept an eye on the schedules – the stadium is big, but fits only a certain amount of trucks and workers simultaneously. I coordinated the work of over a hundred crew members for the whole week. Everyone had their own lot to take care of which they all did perfectly.”

design to the core. The stage found its final form through many different designs.

VideOHead of Video production Johan West Red green Blue RgB ltd”I was the one responsible for the whole video production envisioned by Visual45. It was a complex job that included defining the specifications of the LED screens, calculating the power need and physical restrictions of the equipment and controlling the weight limits of the stage. These kinds of projects also include such time-consuming tasks as simply counting pixels. It determines the way the picture passes through the media servers and appears on the screens.

The huge stage and the whirlwinds at the stadium added some serious challenge. The size of the LED screen was 600 m2 with a wind limit of 15 m/s. The audience seldom realises that a screen functions like a huge sail. And when it comes to the moist weather, it was a bit like taking a TV to a car wash and seeing how well it works afterwards.

Even though the conditions were most challenging, our professional video team showed they were made of steel. Otherwise this kind of outcome would not have been possible.”

Multi camera director Mika leijavuori Red green Blue RgB ltd“The show was recorded by nine cameras and I cut the live feed shown on the LED screens according to the plan. In other words, I showed people what they came to see. Live footage is required, as you can’t see everything from every seat.

It all comes down to a good camera crew. The challenge lies in the fact that everything is live. It is not possible to practice in advance – you only learn by working. I’m making more than a hundred live gigs a year, both in Finland and abroad.

A hundred professionals, each one an expert in their own field, joined their skills and created an international atmosphere we were looking for. Nothing to add there, really.”

ligHTing Head of lighting antti saari proevent productions ltd”Visual45 designed the lighting, I made it happen. It meant planning the cabling, data systems and DMX addresses for moving lights, but also creating schedules for the lighting crew – our team of 15 had to do everything at the right time and in the right order. The project included a lot of practical planning as well. The lights for instance, had to be packed in the trucks in certain order, so the building process could proceed in a logical order once they arrived at the Stadium.

The Finnish summer weather was naturally a challenge of its own. During the building it was raining vertically, so we had to pay a lot of attention on weather protection. However, we did it. When the show started, I put my feet up and enjoyed a cup of coffee.

I’ve been working internationally for ten years with artists like Foo Fighters, Paul McCartney, Lily Allen and Metallica. In comparison with the international scene, Cheek’s gigs were amazing. The show could be taken straight to Wembley, without a doubt.”

diamonds are forever. The four diamonds, referring to one of Cheek’s best-known songs, were the only custom-made designs seen on the stage. Since they are forever, they will no doubt be seen again when the time is right.

”Cheek and his crew

nailed it! having done 22 gigs at the Olympic

Stadium, this goes definitely into my TOP 3. U2 is hard

to beat. Pure awesomeness down to the production!”

pyROTecHnicsMarkku aalto ja Teppo Hakkarainen Oy pyroman Finland ltd ”We have a lot of experience in major projects, such as the finals of the Eurovision Song Contest which we have worked on six times. Even so, Cheek’s concerts were a significant event for us as well.

At first we discussed the pyrotechnical needs with Visual45. They aimed for something big. Two consecutive concerts also meant that we needed to be able to reload the whole set.

There were 40 pyrotechnical positions and three kilometres of cable on the massive stage. Both evenings, 500 explosives were fired on stage, 400 off stage. The programming and technical production took about a week and the set was built up by five men who worked 16 hours a day, three days in a row.

When Cheek started his song about feeling good, I think we all wanted to join the chorus.”

”The total use of smoke fluid was 298 litres during

the gigs.” – Production Manager

Mikko Makkonen, Bright Finland Ltd

sOundsound designer Timo liski sound solutions Finland ltd”I built the stadium’s speaker system and was also responsible for the wireless microphones and other sound-related wireless technology. My colleague Anssi Karjalainen took care of the amplifiers.

Most of the equipment we used came from Bright Finland’s stock, the rest was provided by their partners. The amount of speakers was so unusual for our small country that it simply couldn’t be found in one place.

There are three main points in designing incredible sound: an excellent crew, a thorough plan and good equipment. The order cannot be changed, otherwise you simply won’t succeed. I chose the crew of 15 men, who did their job with ultimate skill. Our aim was to make sure that the sound is perfect on every single seat in the stadium. It felt great to be present and witness how well we succeeded.”

ORganiseR promoottori Jake Hannula ja tuottaja Janne TamminenWarner Music live”As an organiser, Warner’s role was to be financially responsible for the project and see that everything goes according to plan.

It was clear from the start that we were creating Finnish entertainment history. The two shows were a sample of the competence within the Finnish music business, so choosing to use Finnish professionals was an obvious choice.

We can all be extremely proud of the end result. We must take our hats off to the courage and the craziness that gave all of us the guts to take part in this project. I hope it also encourages others to realise that with the right crew anything is possible.”

pOWeR Jokke Riihimaa, Festivaalisähkö ltd Tomi sauren, expoelektro ltd”We are each others’ professional rivals, but it seemed only natural to join forces in a project this huge.

This was the biggest concert ever created by a Finnish crew – a revolution in the business one might say. It was bigger than any average international gig. Only U2 and The Rolling Stones have required this much power in Finland. Iron Maiden was happy with half of it.

When Bright Finland sent us their order, we were sure they had made a mistake. The power requirement was enormous! With this amount of electricity we could easily create a 3-day Finnish summer festival with five stages and a huge restaurant area, from start to finish.

After recovering from the minor shock we designed the power net as required, took care of the safety precautions, did the cabling and produced the power with our machinery. The electrical centres were designed in segments, which ensured that the stage would stay lit if any problems occurred. Even in a case of an electrical blackout in Helsinki, Cheek’s gig would have continued as planned.

We have been in this business for a long time and seen hundreds of concerts. This show, created by professionals, was such a stunner that it stands second to none in international comparison.”

Finnish competence. Only a fraction of the hundred professionals who created the two concerts, had time to pose for the camera. The others had their hands full even when the photo was taken.
