Briefing Session2009-10 First Semester
To ensure students acquired with basic information technology (IT) knowledge for their studies and future career
YITC1001 (3 credits) Need to attend certain classes With coursework – assignments / project
YITC1002 (non-credit-bearing) A test on students’ IT knowledge
Remarks: Can enrol either one of them at a time Some Faculties/Departments allow only one of them

Students who have failed in YITC1002 test must attend
at least half of the resource sessions and library practicals
when they re-enrol YITC1002.
Group Meetings (YITC1001 only) Cover the Theory Part Each group of around 7 students Promotes self-learning
NO NOTES provided, students are expected to search for information themselves
3 meetings, once every 2 weeks, From late September to mid-November
Each meeting lasts 2 hours
Grouping Arrangement
For BDS I, BSc(Sp&HearSc) I and BNurs I students, group meeting schedule are assigned by us and can be checked in the FIT system by the end of next week
For other students, Please sign up ALL your available time slots in the
FIT System by 22 Sep 2009 (Tue) 9 am Grouping assignment with meeting schedule will be
announced on 23 Sep 2009, through the FIT system
Lectures
Introduce elementary concepts about the Theory Part
3 sessions, 1 hour each: Computer hardware and software Network and the Internet Internet Security
Multiple timeslots in September for each session Reservation through the FIT System two weeks

Resource Sessions
Cover the Practical Part 3 sessions, 1 hour each:
PowerPoint Excel Web Publishing
Word and SPSS are self-study parts Notes are provided in the FIT System, but students
are required to study some parts before attending Multiple timeslots from Oct to Nov for each session Reservation through the FIT System two weeks in

Library Practical Sessions
Cover the Library Part 4 sessions, 1 hour each:
Find items on a reading list Find books on a topic Find journal articles on a topic Top ten library resources

Assessment Passing Criteria
YITC1001 At least 50% in continuous assessment, AND At least 50% in the test
Note:If a student fails the test, he/she can take a supplementary test
in a specific date after the deadline. However, even if he/she passes the supplementary test, the highest course grade will be C.
Assessment Passing Criteria
YITC1002 At least 50% in the test Each student can have at most 2 attempts
Notes:• Students who did not take the test when they enrolled
YITC1002 last time can have only one attempt for the test when they re-take YITC1002 now. Similarly, students who do not take the test in this semester will have only one attempt when they re-take next time.
• Students who fail the test will be required to attend at least half of Resource Sessions and Library Practical Sessions if they re-take YITC1002 later.
