• Following the recent Boko Haram, a.k.a. “Nigerian Taliban,” attacks in Borno and Yobe State, the U.S. Embassy has received information that Boko Haram may plan to attack several locations and hotels in Abuja, Nigeria, during the Sallah holiday. Potential targets may include the Nicon Luxury, the Sheraton Hotel, and the Transcorp Hilton Hotel.

Following this dossier for several years…

• It is not only the USDOS warning, but ERRI’s continuing review/analysis of Boko Haram’s activities that have prompted this briefing.

• EmergencyNet News has been reporting on escalating violence involving an Islamist insurgency in Nigeria for some time. In fact, some of our reports from years ago relate to “peak oil” and potential terrorism in Nigeria.

Most recent, and major, atrocities, TTP

UP to 150 people were killed in a wave of gun and bomb attacks in northern Nigeria, which were claimed by the Islamist Boko Haram sect. • President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday (06 Nov)

condemned the assaults, which included at least five suicide bombings and directed security agencies "to ensure the arrest of perpetrators of these heinous acts", said his spokesman, Reuben Abati.

• As bodies piled up in the morgue, a rescue official said the death toll stood at 150.

• The bomb and gun attacks targeted police stations, an army base and churches in the cities of Damaturu, Maiduguri and two other small towns.

• Nigeria's Boko Haram group claimed responsibility. "We are responsible for the attacks in Borno state and Damaturu," said Abul Qaqa.

Further examples of recent and escalating Boko Haram violence

August 26, 2011, a suicide bomber detonated an explosives-laden vehicle at a United Nations compound in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, killing at least 21 people (picture right). Boko Haram claimed responsibility. Boko Haram is the popular title for a group that calls itself Jama`at ahl al-sunna li-da`wa wa-l-qital, and it has operated in Nigeria since 2002-2003. -- The Rise of Boko Haram in Nigeria David Cook, CTC Sentinel, Vol. 4, Iss. 9, Sep 26, 2011

TTP

• Suspected members of the radical Boko Haram Islamist sect on Monday staged simultaneous bomb and gun attacks on a police station and a bank killing seven people, witnesses and local journalists said.

• The dead included five policemen, witnesses said, in an attack coming just four days after the sect bombed the country’s police headquarters in the capital Abuja killing at least two.

• A gang of 10 gunmen launched the two attacks on a police station and a bank in Kankara town, 130 kilometres (80 miles) south of the northern city of Katsina.

Links Between BH & AQIM?

• ERRI analysts are currently investigating links between Boko Haram and AQIM - al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb - which may account for a recent and more sophisticated change in Boko Haram tactics to include multiple, simultaneous, bomb and gun attacks.

• In November 2007 Nigerian authorities arrested five men for alleged possession of seven sticks of dynamite and other explosives. Nigerian prosecutors alleged that three of the accused had trained for two years with the then Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat in Algeria. (Later AQIM)

• In January 2008 the famous Dakar car rally was cancelled due to threats made by associated terrorist organizations.

• Antiaircraft Missiles on the Loose in Libya • Five months after the armed uprising

erupted in Libya, a new round of portable antiaircraft missiles — weapons that governments fear could be obtained by terrorists and then fired at civilian jetliners — have been slipping from storage bunkers captured by rebels. In February, in the early stages of the uprising, large numbers of the missiles reportedly slipped from the hands of Col. Qaddafi’s forces…

• Some SA-7’s are now reportedly in the hands of AQIM terrorists, as they were allegedly transferred to various parts of Africa, including Mauritania…
