Getting Ready for Secondary School

• Year 7 to move to secondary in 2015• For State schools, “junior secondary” from 2013

(Years 8 and 9); from 2015 (Years 7, 8 and 9)• The change will be piloted in up to 20 state

schools prior to 2015• Strong emphasis on pastoral care for Year 7

students, teacher professional development and introduction of the Australian Curriculum

• Increase the Living Away from Home Allowance for Year 7 students to the secondary rate

• Capital funding - $5 million in new funding; ability to utilise up to a further $27 million from State capital funding over the next three years

• New recurrent funding arrangements for kindergartens commenced 2011

• 240 additional kindergartens by 2014• 108 sites announced• Further rounds for 2013 and 2014• 40% of Queensland children currently attending

kindergarten (up from 29% in 2008)• Kindergarten will be an additional year of schooling• Slowly, the barriers between schooling and early

childhood education are being broken down
