Brief Narrative Therapy Practice LabDo you have narrative therapy training, but would like to develop and boost your skills? Then this is the program for you. Learn and practice in a supportive, like-minded environment. This 6-month practice lab certificate program provides participants with a strongly supported learning and practice experience in a brief narrative therapy setting.

Walk-in clinics are an excellent clinical context for therapists to experience and develop skills in brief narrative therapy. Participants will receive close supervision while accruing clinical practice hours. Each participant will have a range of opportunities including: monthly lectures; thorough orientation to the workings of a walk-in clinic in a children’s mental health setting; group clinical supervision; participation in reflecting practices; conducting therapy sessions with children and families; pre and post session paired and group briefings and de-briefings; and session consultations.

The emphasis of this certificate program is practice, practice, practice and focused micro-skill development. Along with current, up-to-date theoretical knowledge in brief narrative and postmodern therapy this program will provide participants with a rich training experience.

Entry prerequisites to the program: 30 or more hours of training through one of the following;

1) Completion of a 5-day Intensive in Brief and Narrative therapy. 2) Completion of the year-long Brief and Narrative Therapy (level one) extern program at the Hincks Dellcrest Institute.3) Completion of the Narrative Therapy training program. 4) Completion of other recognized training programs in narrative/brief/competency-based therapies (to be reviewed and approved on a case by case basis)

Location/setting: Walk-in clinic at ROCK, Reach Out Centre for Kids in Oakville, Ontario

Dates: January 2016 - June 2016 • Tuesdays, twice per month12:00 noon to 8:00 pm • 10 sessions

Phase one: Orientation (3 sessions, January and February)During this phase participants will have the opportunity to engage as outsider witnesses in a minimum of 5 client sessions. Each session will be pre-briefed and de-briefed and include a session reflective break for outsider witnessing. These hours meet the definition for group clinical supervision as outlined by the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO).

Phase two: Team work (4 sessions, March and April)During this phase participants will have the opportunity to engage in a minimum of 8 sessions. All participants will have roles ranging from outsider witnesses (this role will qualify as clinical supervision hours) with 2 participants per session being active therapists (lead and reflective therapist) in the session (these roles qualify as direct clinical hours).

Phase three: Paired work (3 sessions, May and June)During this phase participants will work in pairs at the walk-in clinic facilitating sessions as lead and reflective therapists. There will be at least 6 sessions per therapist pair. These qualify as direct clinical hours. Each session will include a pre-session briefing with an instructor, a mid-session break to consult with an instructor and a post-session de-briefing. These hours (approximately ½ hr. per session) qualify as supervision hours.

Theoretical presentations:In each phase there will be one two-hour teaching session with Jim Duvall and Shari Lecker. Topics will include micro-practices of brief narrative therapy and other theoretical developments in brief narrative, postmodern and client-centred therapeutic approaches. There will be a focus on use of self as an ongoing topic.

Biography: Karen Young, MSW/RSWKaren is the Co-Founder and Co-Director, along with Jim Duvall, of the Windz Institute, operated by Reach Out Centre for Kids, Centre of Learning. She provides supervision to interns, students and staff, organizes training, oversees research projects, and for over 14 years has supervised and provided single session therapy at the walk-in therapy clinic. Karen has provided consultation to many organizations in Ontario, across Canada, and internationally regarding re-structuring service pathways to include Brief Services such as walk-in clinics.

She was a faculty member with the Hincks-Dellcrest Institute for 13 years, managing and teaching in the yearlong certificate program in Brief and Narrative Therapy, the Narrative Therapy Training Certificate Program, and providing many workshops. She is a therapist with 30 years of experience working with children and families and has situated her therapeutic conversations within narrative practices for 25 years. Karen has contributed numerous publications regarding applications of brief narrative therapy and research in brief services and walk-in therapy. 

She co-authored the Brief Services Online Course for CMHA Ontario (Duvall, J. & Young, K., 2015) and co-authored the policy paper for the Ontario Centre of Excellence for Child and Youth Mental Health (Duvall, J., Young, K., Kays-Burden, A., 2012), No more, no less: Brief Mental Health Services for Children and Youth. Karen was the lead in the first in Ontario Brief Services Evaluation Project, 2014, a multi-organization evaluation of brief services. Karen has a great deal of knowledge and passion for narrative practices and is one of the few trainers who can teach the traditional aspects of the approach and new evolutions in the thinking.  She has particular expertise in the application of narrative in brief and walk-in therapies. Karen is regarded as a trainer who conveys narrative ideas in very clear and useable ways.

Biography: Jim Duvall M.Ed., R.S.W.Jim Duvall is an author, consultant, trainer, speaker and researcher. He operates an independent training and consulting practice in Galveston Island, Texas. He is also the Co-Founder and Co-Director, along with Karen Young of the newly founded Windz Institute, which is operated by ROCK Centre for Learning in Oakville, Ontario. The Institute is engaged in training, research and community outreach in Narrative Practices. Jim also serves as the Senior Editor of the Journal of Systemic Therapies. He is the previous Director of Training at Hincks-Dellcrest Institute in Toronto, Ontario and previous Director of Brief Therapy Training Centres-International.

In addition to numerous articles and book chapters, Jim co-authored a policy paper (Duvall, J., Young, K., Kays-Burden, A., 2012), No more, no less, Brief mental health services for children and youth. As a result of the recommendations of this paper Brief Core Services were mandated to be available to children and families in every community in Ontario. His book, (Duvall & Beres, 2011), Innovations in Narrative Therapy: Connecting Practice, Training and Research. WW Norton & Company is the first book to integrate training and research with narrative therapy, resulting in a compelling evidence base. He is presently co-authoring an edited book with Marie-Nathalie Beaudoin, entitled Collaborative Therapies and Neuroscience: Emerging Practices in Action. Rutledge/ Taylor-Francis.

Jim teaches and consults with organizations internationally throughout Canada, US, Australia and Asia about collaborative and narrative practices and how to create accessible and ethical services for children and families. He is known for his ability to engage people’s curiosity, inviting them to break away from taken-for-granted beliefs, toward a creative philosophy and principles for practicing that often produces unexpected opportunities. Jim is noted for his approachable and interactive teaching style.

Other times he can be found playing music with his friends or boating on the Gulf of Mexico with his children, grandchildren and their dog, Banjo.

Biography: Shari Lecker, M.Ed., RP

Shari has a master of education specializing in counselling psychology from McGill University. She is a Registered Psychotherapist and a therapist with 23 years experience working with children and families. For the last 9 years Shari has been a Manager of Clinical Services at Reach Out Centre for Kids where she provides leadership to a multidisciplinary clinical team including supervision to clinical staff, psychology residents, interns and graduate students.

Shari has a passion for training and mentoring counsellors and therapists and she was awarded Excellence in Social Work Practicum Teaching from Laurier University. Shari oversees ROCK’s Walk-In Counselling Clinic, and provides supervision, consultation, assessment, and single session and brief therapy. Shari adheres to a strength based, client focused approach in her clinical intervention. She has a strong theoretical background and extensive applied practice using evidence based models such as Narrative Therapy, Cognitive Behavior Therapy and Attachment Focused Therapy.

Since Shari’s first introduction to Narrative Therapy, externalizing conversations that are transparent, collaborative and non-pathologizing resonated deeply within her and she immersed herself in narrative workshops, readings, and practice. Today Shari supports the practice of those who consult her in ways that enhance their narrative skill development. In her role at ROCK Shari has also been integral to the configuration, implementation and training of ROCK’s clinical database and how to create in-session documentation practices using technology.

CANCELLATION POLICY ROCK reserves the right to cancel workshops due to under-enrollment, instructor illness or inclement weather. If a workshop is cancelled, ROCK is responsible for refunding only the tuition payment. For a refund, a notice of cancellation must be received in writing 14 days prior to the workshop date. After that time a credit maybe issued, which may be applied to a future workshop of similar value. This credit must be used within one year of date of issue. An administration fee of $40 will be charged for cancellations. We are not able to offer a credit if you do not notify us by the day of the workshop.
