Brief Industrial Profile of Kanker District
1. General Characteristics of the District
Previously Kanker was a part of old Bastar district. But in 1998 Kanker
got its identity as an independent district. Now it is surrounded by four
districts of chhattisgarh state, namely Bastar, Dhamtari, Durg and
Rajnandgaon
1.1 Location & Geographical Area.
Kanker is situated within the longitudes 20.6-20.24 and latitudes 80.48-
81.48. the total area of the district is 5285.01 square kilometers. Small
hilly pockets are seen throughout the area.Mainly five rivers flow
through the district namely- doodh river, Mahanadi, Hatkul river, sindur
river and Turu river.
1.2 Topography
The surface of Kanker is built of different types of hills. These hills are
ancient. In Geography we can divide these hills in three groups viz.
Vindhyana Hill Group, Archian Hill Groups and Dharwar Hill Groups.
Around 80 percent area of Kanker is plane surface. Plane surface can be
divided in two parts viz. Mahanadi plane and Kotri plane.
1.3 Availability of Minerals.
Iron Ore quartzite and garnet mines are found in region iron and ore
deposit have been found in the region of Bhanupratappur. But mining of
these minerals have not started till now. Deposit of Quartzite and garnet
have been also found in southern region of Kanker district and garnet
deposit in north east region of Bhanupratappur. About 1000 Lacks ton

1.4 FOREST
In Kanker district Saul, Teak and mixed forests are found . Saul
forests are found in the eastern part of the district , Teak forests are
found in the Bhanupratappur region and mixed forests are found in
maximum region. In which so many medicinal plants and other
plants are found like Saja, Tendu, Dhaura, Bija, Harra, Mahua etc.
1.5 Administrative set up.
Kanker district has 7 tehsils named Kanker, Charama,
Narharpur, Bhanupratappur, Antagarh, Durgukondal and
Pakhanjoor and 7 blocks named Kanker, charama, bhanupratapur,
Narharpurn Antagarh, Durgukondal and Koyali beda. The total
number of villages is 1004. The number of revenue villages is 995,
whereas forest villages are 9. The nuber of Gram Panchayats is 389.

3. INDUSTRIAL SCENERIO OF KANKER
Kanker district is industrially backward in nature. The economy of the
district mainly depends on agriculture and allied activities. However,
people are becoming aware and setting up some micro manufacturing and
service enterprises and also taking advantage of PMEGP scheme.
