Brief Industrial Profile of Bikaner District

1. General Characteristics of the District:

The district derives its name from its principal city “Bikaner” which was established by Rathore Prince Rao Bikaji, the livelist and most enterprising son of Rao Jodhaji of Marwar, founded Bikaner in 1488 A.D. After the advent of Ganga Canal in 1927 A.D. a major change in the constitution of administrative divisions was affected and the whole of Bikaner State territory was divided into four districts Bikaner, Ganganagar, Churu and Hanumangarh. The town is famous for delicacies like Rasgullas, Bhujias and Papads. It has become a big wool production centre and has a unique Camal research farm.

1.1 Location & Geographical Area:

Bikaner is one of desert district situated in the North-West of Rajasthan .It extends from 27°11’ to 29°3’ North latitudes and 71°54’ to 74°22’ East longitudes is bounded on the north by Ganganagar, Jaisalmer district and Pakistan in the west, churu in east and nagaur and Jodhpur district in South –East. The district has a geographical area 30247.90 Sq.Km. which is around 8.8 percent of the total area of the state and stands at second place area wise in the state after the Jaislamer.

1.2 Topography.

The major part of the district is comprised of desolate and dry regions which form part of the Great India Desert of Thar. There are two natural divisions of the district name (i) North and Western desert and (ii) South and Eastern Semi- desert. At many place one finds shifting sand –dunes of varying heights ranging from 6 to 30 meters. The general slope of the region is towards the west and North West. The district is devoid of any perennial stream. Small ephemeral streams flow in the vicinity of Kolayat, Gajner, and Gurha. Natural in land depressions which retain some water during the summer are located near Loonkarnsa, Kolayat, Gajner and Nal. Construction of canals in

the western parts has to activation of the stable dune field. The migrating sand is thickening the canals and roads.

1.3 Availability of Minerals.

Almost the entire district is devoid of rock exposures except near Kolayat and at a few places in the southern parts of Nokha and Dulmera. The district Bikaner is thus vast sandy tracks except Kolayat are covered with sand of Rock locally known as “Magra” are found is parts Kolayat tehsil. In the magra areas various types of sand stone, clay and lime stone are found at different levels. Fuller’s earth viz Mulatani Miti, Clay lignite and gypsum, white clay, yellow ochre and grit and important economic minerals being produced in the district. Gypsum beds up to 30 meters thick and of the best quality available in India are found in Loonkaransar, Dulmera and Dheerera. There are deposits of fuller earth at Village Palana (Bikaner tehsil) and Mudh (Kolayat tehsil). Red sand-stone quarries are located near dulmera village (Loonkaransar tehsil). Simultaneously impure lime stone is excavated all over the district. Glass sand is found near Madh and lignite is available at various places in kolayat tehsil and Palana.
