Brief 8 - Project 1
For this project I planned to work quite openly,
attempting to explore a range of media allowing
me to see what formats I work with best. I tried
not to base my submissions too heavily on other
artist’s work.
This was the result of some moving image
experimentation. The first issue was based on the
content of our first meeting, topics and processes
we discussed.

“That’s you, drops of water and you’re on top of the mountain
of success.
But one day you start sliding down the mountain and you
think wait a minute; I’m a mountain top water drop.
I don’t belong in this valley, this river,
this low dark ocean with all these drops of water.
Then one day it gets hot and you slowly evaporate into air, way
up, higher than any mountain top, all the way to the heavens.
Then you understand that it was at your lowest that you were
closest to God.
Life’s a journey that goes round and round and the end is
closest to the beginning.
So if it’s change you need, relish the journey.”

The second issue was based on the theme ‘Journey’.
I looked at the film ‘I’m Still Here’ and also the works
of Bill Viola. His work is often about the journey of
self discovery and spiritualisation.
I chose his video piece “An Ocean Without A Shore’
and cut it up, changing it into a still format. I wanted
to still show the development of the video so I
used the early shots of the video at the edges and
progressed into the middle.

Working with a collaborator’s lyrics I chose to overlay
some tree shadows. I had chosen to hand write the
lyrics to experiment with hand rendered typography.
My second submission consisted of multiple images
I had scanned in from a Jane Fonda workout book. I
felt the shaped the figure made resembled that of a
tree. Overlaying them gave a real sense of movement.
My third submission consisted of the individual scnas
themselves, seperated and mounted onto the Atelier
wall.

For the fifth issue we decided to produce posters for
the live zine printing we will be doing on the 24th May
at the Broadcasting From The Brudenell exhibition.
These are the two images I submitted and the text
remains the same on all of the pictures. The images
are from a gig I went to at the Brudenell Social Club,
a band called Summer Camp projected old photos
onto a cloth, it seemed like a good idea to use
something that had already exisited in the Brudenell
Socail Club.
We plan to print onto A3 and exihibit the posters
behind us when we are printing the zines on the night.

Atelier - A Production of a Publication
For the documentation publication I am producing
for my second brief 8 project I needed to consider
layout, grids and typography. I planned to use a lot of
photographs taken during the Atelier process, I felt
this would be the best way to explain how we went
about making the zines.
Your Friends work mainly uses photographs, so I got
some good ideas of how I might layout some of my
pages.

Filippo Nostri has been a big influence on my work.
His work remains very minimal but effective. He uses
very simple solutions to create some really nicely
designed publications.
I have written the content for my publication so it
was useful seeing how Nostri had dealt with the
relationship between text and image.
