WELCOME

This booklet is a guide to further education opportunities after high school. It includes general application information for different universities, TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) colleges and other institutions within Gauteng in South Africa. For each university, there is a section on every department, faculty or college, and for each TVET college, there a section on every NV(C) (National Certificate (Vocational)) course offered. Within each section, as much relevant information as possible has been included: ranging from website addresses and contact details, to admission requirements and application deadlines.

GENERAL INFORMATION The Admission Point Score (APS) system has been developed for the National Senior Certificate and the Independent Examinations Board, and is based on the achievement rating of each subject. Your total APS is the sum of the achievement ratings of seven of your Grade 12 subjects (including Life Orientation), and determines if you are eligible for a particular course at a university. How to calculate your Admission Point Score:

1. Write down the seven subjects you are taking for Grade 12, including Life Orientation, as well as your result for each subject. If you have taken more than seven subjects, use your best seven subjects (still including Life Orientation).

2. Allocate an Admission Point Score to each of your subjects according to the table shown below.

3. Add up the number of APS points from all of your subjects. 4. Compare your calculated APS with the minimum APS requirement for admission into a

particular department or course at a university. 5. Note that some universities do not count Life Orientation in the total points, and other

universities only count half of the points from Life Orientation. Check with each university to see how to treat Life Orientation.

Achievement level and APS points allocated

Achievement level Marks

7 Outstanding achievement 80-100 %

6 Meritorious achievement 70-79 %

5 Substantial achievement 60-69 %

4 Adequate achievement 50-59 %

3 Moderate achievement 40-49 %

2 Elementary achievement 30-39 %

1 Not achieved 0-29 %

Most universities will require you to write a National Benchmark Test (NBT) as an additional part of your application. Check with each university to see if the NBT applies for your course, as well as for details regarding registration and dates.

GENERAL INFORMATION TVET (Technical Vocational Education and Training) colleges offer vocational and occupational training for specific job and employment opportunities within South Africa. There are several different qualifications offered at TVET colleges. General characteristics are outlined below: NC(V): National Certificate (Vocational) The NC(V) is a qualification that consists of three levels (Level 2, Level 3 and Level 4) of the NQF (National Qualifications Framework). This qualification is designed to provide both the theory and practical aspects of the specific programmes. The practical component of study may be offered in a real workplace environment or in a simulated workplace environment. It will provide students with an opportunity to experience work situations during the period of study. A certificate is issued on the successful completion of each of the three levels of study: i.e. Level 2, Level 3 and Level 4. Each level of the NC(V) course takes one year to complete. In general, for entry into the National Certificate (Vocational) at NQF Level 2, you require: A year-end school report for Grade 9 or higher; or A NQF Level 1 qualification

In order to obtain a NC(V), a student is required to take a total of 7 subjects. These include 3 fundamental subjects and 4 vocational subjects, which vary depending on the course. The 3 fundamental subjects are English (which is the language of teaching and learning), Mathematics and Life Orientation. NATED: National N4 – N6 Qualification These courses are aimed at learners that have completed Grade 12, and would like to enter the job market fairly quickly. There are three levels: N4, N5 and N6, and each level takes 6 months to complete (a total of 18 months for Levels 4 to 6). These courses lead to a National N Diploma: after completing N6 theory in the classroom, learners need 18 months of relevant, practical work experience, after which they can apply for the National Diploma.

The courses listed in this section of the booklet (TVET colleges) are NC(V) Level 2, unless stated otherwise.
