On-ramping: A slippery slope

Midland College worked with AEL and DE faculty and administrators to develop, fund and teach the Bridge Academy

AEL provided the students as the recruitment from college freshmen resulted in zero participants, although the college enrolled more than 160 students with TSI scores below 335

Partnerships with Workforce of the Permian Basin, Insignia hotel management group and Midland Memorial hospital.

The Bridge Academy curriculum was developed with input from the hospitality industry. The initial curriculum was developed for incumbent workers. The program has taken more than 3 years to put into place, but the majority of curriculum was developed during 3 months in the summer. Curriculum modified for lower skilled readers.

Hardships Encountered – Opening up dialog

Hardships

• Alignment : Difficult to find the correct SIP code for IET

• Alignment difficult with college Pathways ideals, so recruitment was an issue

• Preconceived ideas of the students the program served

• Communication between campuses and program directors about funding, enrollment, collection of artifacts

Remedies

Worked with TWC to find a fit for a local marketable skills certificate

Career Navigator from AEL invited to college advising meetings and trainings

More discussion on target audience

Most of the difficulty was the different experiences each director has had with grant procedures

Lessons learned—Time heals all wounds or…

• The best-laid plans of mice and men often go awry.

• No matter how carefully a project is planned, something may still go wrong with it. The saying is adapted from a line in “To a Mouse,” by Robert Burns.

•Students who read below 335:• Believe they will be the one student to succeed academically•The Bridge Academy is too good to be true

Students comments:

1. More time on Excel and Word

2. More time for mock interviews and speaking/more writing

3. More math help

4. More updated materials

5. More understanding about using phones as translators and keyboarding issues if student is from another country

Instructor Comments:

• Language barriers

• Begin the program later in the semester to catch DE drops for non-payment and late registration

• Extend Microsoft classes and writing

• Liked 8 week format
