BRIDGEWORK: ITS EMPIRIC APPLICATION T h e term bridgework w a s on banner o f fixed bridge- work with C. L. Richmond a s t h e standard bearer. Waved i n t h e very mouths o f t h e people i n t h e middle seventies, i t d i d n o t creep into dental literature until t h e early eighties, although many variations o f partial-denture restorations were practised long before, that would today b e classified under t h e heading o f bridgework. Born i n t h e darkness o f empiricism, i t nevertheless immediately became identified i n t h e minds o f t h e people with th e halo o f a scientific discovery. This identification, although strong, w a s a negative identification an d n o t a positive one, f o r t o them i t represented much t o o early a release from t h destructive naggings o f t h e empiric application o f a l l restora- tive mechanisms (under t h e heading o f partial dentures o r partial plates) that preceded t h e advent o f Richmond bridgework. Strange a s i t m a y seem, bridgework, despite ravages which a r e akin only t o those o f a vast field b y a n army o f locusts, still retains a simi- l a r hold upon t h e people. This i s today responsible, a s with t h e us e o f t h e term pyorrhea, f o r i t s arbitrary an d extensive exploitation.
