b s t r a c t

This paper presents a broad review of some fundam ental aspects of pos ture in terms of st ructure , funct ion and cont rol ( including

dysfunct ion and postura l behaviour) and a t tempts to der ive impl icat ions for ergonomics .

It

beg i ns by r ev i ew i ng r e sea r ch on t he

anatomical bas i s of the upr ight bipedal pos ture in man and i t s evolut ionary development , based on recent foss i l d i scover ies .

Relevant aspects of the anatomy of the spine , pelvi s and hip are then reviewed together wi th some developmental aspects of

posture and a considerat ion of pos tura l faul t s and muscle balance gleaned f rom the c l inical f i t era ture . Fur ther c l inical aspects are

discussed to int roduce the concepts of pos tura l cont rol , feedback and postura l behaviour . Final ly , some aspects of cross-cul tura l

pos tura l var ia t ion are br ief ly reviewed.

I t i s conclud ed that em pi r ical research on posture and ef fect ive workspace des ign can ben ef i t f rom a considerat ion of these

f undament a l a spec t s o f pos t u r e . Much o f moder n des i gn p r ac t i ce w ou l d appea r t o be bu i l t a r ound a l i m i t ed s e t o f pos t u r a l

s tereotypes which are probably cul tura l ly biased and do not ref lec t the t rue l imi ta t ions and poss ibi l i t i es of human anatomy. Whether

improved des igns can be implemented on the bas i s of these fundamental s i s both an empi r ical ques t ion and a chal lenge to the

ingenuity of designers.

R e l e v a n c e t o i n d u st r y

Postural s t ress and occupat ional ly- re la ted musculoskele ta l di sorders have a high incidence in the indust r ia l ly developed nat ions of

the wor ld. Much research i s cur rent ly underway to determine the reasons for thi s and provide des igners wi th more ef fect ive

guidel ines . This paper p resents a review of fun dame ntal aspects of pos ture to provide a wider conceptu al bas i s for the inves t igat ion of

these problems.
