Kellie and Blake Buck, Wahpeton, were married Aug. 24 at St. John’s Catholic Church in a traditional cer-emony, but the way they became en-gaged made headlines.

Blake proposed to Kellie in a fish house while the two were ice fishing at Otter Tail Lake nearly a year ago, after hatching a plan with a friend who was also a scuba diver.

“I had no idea,” she said, recalling the

day. “It was crazy. I watched him put my line in and there was nothing on it. There was a pull, and I thought I caught a fish. It was a plastic fish with a ring on it.”

Blake and his buddy, Mike Metzer, were talking about ways to propose while working at Minn-Dak Farmers Cooperative. They came up with the idea of setting up a fish house near Blake’s, and having Metzer suit up in scuba gear and dive underwater to at-tach the plastic fish and diamond ring to Kellie’s line, unbeknownst to her.

She called her mom and told her she “caught a fiancee.”

The two had dated about four years, although she said they really didn’t keep track.

They had a short, six-month engage-ment before walking down the aisle and taking their vows.

Kellie said she started dress shopping a mere week after the engagement, since everyone was warning her she

needed at least six months to find and have her dress fitted.

She took along her mother, Blake’s mother, her grandmother and the maid of honor on a stormy day in search of her gown. She said she “got really lucky” and only tried on seven dresses before deciding on the one she wanted.

The clerk informed her the gown she

had chosen had been discontinued, but she could purchase the sample for a 50 percent discount.

“It didn’t fit me and I had to get it al-tered, but it was perfect,” Kellie said.

The couple had a large wedding par-ty, seven groomsman and bridesmaids, and a guest list to match – about 450 friends and family, she said. Kellie was

When Diana Zietlow married Jamie Hermes Aug. 18, 2012, in a private cer-emony on Lake Elsie, traditionally that day would have been all about the bride. Since it was the second marriage for both, they instead focused on family.

“It was nice to keep people included with it,” Diana said. “I know it was my big day but also to have them there to share it with Jamie and I was a blessing.”

Diana and Jamie met in September 2008 and got engaged Dec. 22, 2011 after Jamie presented his girl with a heartfelt letter detailing his affection for her and what he wanted out of a marriage. While she was reading it, Jamie got down on

one knee and asked if she would be that woman.

“We always seem to be ourselves around each other and we’re very com-patible,” Diana said.

Diana said planning went pretty smoothly since the couple decided they wanted a simple ceremony with lots of help from family and friends. Going with the theme of celebration, the five bridesmaids’ dresses were different vi-brant spring colors. Wahpeton Floral

matched the colors with bright floral ar-rangements. On the groom’s side, Jaime and his five groomsmen wore white polo shirts and khaki pants.

“I always just wanted a bright, summer wedding,” Diana said. “We just decided to have something simple and we always wanted to get married at the lake.”

When the big day arrived, the guests were greeted with a beautiful, sunny day on the lake shore. The short ceremony had many special touches that focused

on the love the two share. They said their “I do’s” between two massive trees with a glistening lake backdrop.

A touching addition to the wedding was the sand ceremony instead of the more traditional unity candle with Diana’s 10-year-old daughter Alexis Krause. Each of the three had a different color of sand they poured into a shared vial. Then at the end of the reading, all three sands mixed to represent them be-coming a family unit.

“Jamie and Alexis seem to get along very well and we all get along,” Diana said. “Jamie thinks of Alexis as his own daughter, so that helps.”

The reception followed at the newly opened Hankinson Community Center, with local DJ Randy Roeder from Sound Solutions playing some of the couple’s favorite chart toppers. In order to add another element of family and togeth-erness, friends served a buffet of ham sandwiches, salads and the fixings. The chocolate swirl cake included again tied in the colorful theme with all the all the bridesmaid’s colors ornamenting the layers. Also on the head table, there was different colors of flower vases with fake flowers in them.

“It was kind of neat to have all differ-ent color tablecloths that matched the bridesmaids dresses,” Diana said. “Then we had little tea lights on the tables and it was Alexis’s idea to put Hershey’s around the tea lights so it looked like a little campfire.”

In the five months since their wedding, Diana said married life has been good. The family will soon be growing with the addition of a new baby in July.

a bridesmaid in each of her own brides-maid’s weddings.

“I was the last one single,” she joked.The night before, the groomsmen

stayed over at Blake’s home and the bridesmaids had a sleepover at Kellie’s parents’ house.

“It was so much fun,” she said. The women stayed up late talking and then had a nice brunch the next morning before getting their hair and makeup done.

The couple had a late afternoon wed-ding, with a reception in Fergus Falls at the Bigwood Events Center.

“We took a party bus over to Fergus, it was so fun,” Kellie said. “It’s the only way to go. It was great, for all of us to be able to be together and not worry about driving.”

City Bakery in Fergus Falls made the couple’s wedding cake and cupcakes in four flavors, and Fargo-based Pho-tographer Jill Ockhardt captured the couple’s special day. Jerry Albright of

MixVibesDJ Service designed the illu-minated “Love” backdrop at their re-ception.

“It was beautiful,” Kellie said of the reception hall.

Since Kellie was starting a new teach-ing job at Central Elementary School two days after the wedding, the couple had to postpone a honeymoon. They fi-nally took it on Christmas Day, spend-ing a week in tropical Jamaica, return-ing on New Year’s Day.

Kellie said her advice to others plan-ning their own wedding is to enjoy it and have fun.

“It goes really fast. Don’t stress, espe-cially the day of. It is what it is, whatev-er happens happens,” she said. “Your attitude is what makes it. You just have to be happy and everything’s going to be perfect.”

It was a day of memories.Months later, the wedding of Saman-

tha Leinen to Christopher Wallace was a snapshot of a hectic and busy day. The pictures reflect a happy bride and groom and their loved ones surrounding them, sharing in the celebration.

Although Sept. 8, 2012 passed by in a blur, Samantha said no matter what else happened that day, in the end it was about looking into Christopher’s eyes as

both made a promise to honor and love each other for the rest of their lives.

Christopher and Samantha grew up on opposite sides of the river. He is a Breck-enridge graduate, while she wore Wah-peton colors. The couple met through mutual friends and 2 1/2 years later, the two were engaged.

Christopher, 28, and Samantha, 23, were married on a beautiful fall day. It reminded them of a similar weekend the year before when Christopher proposed at Inspiration Peak.

When Christopher asked her to marry him, it was the beginning of a magical year of preparation and planning as the couple waited for their wedding day.

Samantha, the daughter of Richard and Penny Leinen, Wahpeton, and Christopher, the son of Gary and Shirley Wallace, Battle Lake, Minn., had plenty of opportunity to see what made their parent’s marriages so happy. Samantha said her parents have been married for 26 years. Through them, she learned the importance of honesty, loyalty and faith-fulness to each other.

“Whatever they do, they respect each other,” she said.

A diligent young woman, Samantha set out the year leading to her wedding with a style of her own, but with organi-zation as the main theme.

She shopped for her wedding dress with three women she trusted to help her find the dress, her mom, aunt and cousin.

“It was surreal looking at all of those dresses and hoping to find the right one,” she said. “We found it. We found ‘the dress.’”

The first time she tried it on though, it

didn’t have the right feel at first. But after trying on many other dresses, Samantha went back to it. With the dress found, it was now a matter of staying organized and getting ready for her special day. A week before the wedding, this bride’s nerves were still steady. All of her plan-ning had paid off and she was ready.

The morning dawned bright and clear in September and Samantha looked for-ward to the time when she would become Mrs. Wallace.

“It all seems surreal now,” she said. “I couldn’t believe the time had finally come.”

The day was filled with moments: The first time they saw each other dressed in their wedding finery, their wedding kiss and their first dance as husband and wife.

She lived in the moment then and hasn’t stopped. Although the wedding is over, this bride and groom have the rest of their lives to enjoy each other’s com-pany.

Jessica Bakken was engaged to Shawn Paschke in May of 2011. Throughout the months that led to her wedding, Oct. 20, 2012, Bakken had to do most of the preparations from a dis-tance.

“I planned the whole wedding from St. Louis,” she said.

Jessica, who was attending the Lo-gan Chiropractic College at the time, said that the most challenging part

was trying to convey what she wanted to do over the phone.

“It was hard planning a wedding 12 hours away,” she said, “trying to de-scribe something to my family, stress-ing designs and giving them that visu-alization was difficult over the phone.”

The wedding came together though. Jessica had previously helped plan her sisters’ wedding and had some experi-ence.

“Everything came out better than I could have ever imagined,” she said, “It was great finishing the decorations the Friday before the wedding and see-ing everything in place.”

Jessica explained that she wanted a simple wedding that still was elegant. After looking on the website Pinterest,

she discovered that she could make some of the decorations on her own. For example, she used canning jars

and placed floating candles inside. As the weeks got closer and closer to

her big day, Jessica said that things

really started to pick up with the plan-ning,

“The closer we got is when we really

started doing the big finishing touch-es,” she said.

Eventually, Jessica and some of her friends went to Fargo for an afternoon and selected a wedding dress. She said she tried on 30 dresses and when she found the right one she said, “I just knew. I said this is it.”

The wedding reception took place at the Wahpeton Eagles Club and the col-ors for the wedding were black, green and ivory. The reception served chick-en with mashed potatoes and glazed carrots for dinner and had donut holes and a candy buffet for dessert.

“It was such a great day overall,” Jessica said, “It was great not having to worry about anything, knowing ev-

erything was taken care of.” Jessica added that she and Shawn

were grateful that the wedding had a good turnout and all of the couple’s friends and family were able to share in their celebration.

Jessica and Shawn had been

dating for six years before getting en-gaged. Jessica said the day that she and Shawn were married “was a real-ization.”

“It was that feeling of alright, we did it!” she said.
