When a couple gets married, they usually exchange rings as asymbol of their union. Wedding ring styles can run the gamutfrom simple gold bands to custom diamond creations. Whateverthe choice, whatever the price, wedding rings have long been apart of the celebration and there are many superstitions surrounding them. Following is a brief description of some ofthem.

DON'T DROP THE RINGAccording to superstition, it is bad luck to drop the ring during thewedding ceremony. Whoever does so will be the first to die. If thering does happen to get dropped, neither the bride nor the groomshould pick it up. Whoever is officiating should. Superstition alsohas it that a wedding ring dropped in a cemetery that rolls acrossa grave indicates death-death of the bride if the grave is of afemale or death of the groom if the grave is of a male.

WEAR THE RING ON THE RIGHT FINGERIn most countries, wedding rings are worn on the ring finger, orthe fourth finger, of the left hand. This stems from the ancientbelief that the vein of that particular finger on the left hand ranstraight to the heart. In other countries, the ring is worn on thering finger of the right hand. This stems from the belief that thethumb and first two fingers of the right hand are sacred to theTrinity.

DON'T TAKE THE RING OFFTaking the wedding ring off could lead to loss or damage, a signthe marriage will come to an end. Lost or damaged weddingrings should be replaced as soon as possible and vows renewed. In some areas, it is acceptable to remove a wedding ring after thebirth of the first child. Superstition also has it that a wedding ringsuspended on a lock of hair over the womb of a pregnant womancan determine the sex of the baby. Spinning clockwise denotesa boy; spinning counterclockwise denotes a girl.

OTHER SUPERSTITIONSThere are many other superstitions regarding wedding rings.Rubbing a wedding ring over a wart or sty will remove it, whilesleeping with a bite of wedding cake pulled through a weddingring will bring dreams of the person's future spouse. Some couples have a faux wedding ring baked inside their weddingcake. The guest that finds the ring will be married within the year.Pearls are shaped like tears, and therefore, not a good idea forwedding rings. Sapphires and aquamarines, on the other hand, symbolize marital bliss and make an excellent choice for wedding rings.

Of course, all of these are merely superstitions. Brides andgrooms do lose their wedding ring from time to time, and while itmight lead to some tension with their partner, it usually does notspell the end of their marriage. It gives them the opportunity toget a new ring, perhaps even one better than before. It is fun tolearn what superstitions brides and grooms once observed. Many seem silly today, but that wasn't the case at the time.

Many a young girl dreams of marrying her prince

one day in a lavish wedding. Planning such a wedding

requires time and money, and lots of it. The more

elaborate the wedding, the higher the price tag.

Experts suggest that the average price for a wedding

today runs anywhere from $20,000 to $30,000. For

many folks, the figure is staggering. For others, it is a

mere pittance.

There have been many weddings costing in the

millions of dollars throughout history, but the most

expensive to date belongs to that of Vanish Mittal and

Amit Bhatia. The six-day affair was held in France in

2004 and cost $55 to $60 million. Mittal's father, the

Indian Steel Maharajah, picked up the tab for the

affair, which included performances by Sha Rukh

Khan and Kylie Minogue.

Next to a multimillion-dollar wedding, a $12 million

wedding dress might seem like nothing. The Diamond

Wedding Gown from Renee Strausse and Martin Katz

Jewellers featured 150 carats of diamonds and was

the most expensive in the world. It was shown at the

Luxury Brands Lifestyle Bridal Show in 2006, while

the second-most expensive wedding dress was

shown at Dubai's Fashion & Diamonds Show.

Designed by Yumi Katsura, the gown featured

a thousand pearls and one of only two five-carat whitegold diamonds in the world. It was valued at $8.5million.

For wedding cakes, nothing can top the $20 million masterpiece of Nahid La Patisserie Artistique andMimi So. The cake appeared in 2006 at the LuxuryBridal Show in Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. Deckedwith jewels, it was not intended to be eaten.

The tab for flowers for the average wedding can runin the hundreds of dollars, but the most expensive wedding bouquet cost way more, about $125,000.The red and white bouquet features 90 gemstones, nine diamonds and a star-shaped ruby and is on display on the sixth floor of the Ruby Plaza in Hano,Vietnam.

Money is not always an object in wedding planning. Itis hard to imagine someone spending millions of dollars on a once-in-a-lifetime event, but it does happen, often with celebrities and the well-to-do.Sometimes the marriage works, and sometimes itdoesn't, begging the question if over-the-top weddings are worth it.

Not so long ago when a couple announced their engagement and the bride selected her maid of honor, the maid of honor would start planning the bridal shower. She would invite all of the bride's closestfemale friends and family members together to toast the bride and share good times with her. Whilesome brides today continue this tradition, others take an alternative route. One of the biggest trends inbridal showers today is the couples shower in which friends and family gather together with both thebride and the groom. With more grooms taking an active role in the wedding planning and more couples footing the bill for their wedding themselves, it is only natural that some couples would want toshare the shower experience. Couples showers can be held at someone's home or at one of the couple's favorite venues. The key to any good shower is to involve the bride or couple. Whoever is hosting the shower should get the input of the bride or the couple and respect their wishes. After all, theyare the guests of honor.

You have proposed marriage to the woman of your dreams. Her acceptance means that now, you mustprepare for the big day! You will stand beside your bride in that "picture perfect moment," a snapshot in time

which will forever adorn your mantel. Choosing the perfect tuxedo and accessories is vital, thus making the taskdaunting. Here are some guidelines to make it easier for you to choose the perfect formal wear for your wedding.

1) "GET WITH" THE THEME & DON'T FORGET THE BRIDE! Don't look out of place at your own wedding! Weddings can have themes ranging from The Great Gatsby, to Art

Deco, Renaissance, Nouveau... It's your party and you're the co-star. So, dress the part! Choose a tuxedo thatcomplements your bride's gown. For instance, if it's a traditional wedding, dress in a classic tux. If it is a

modern wedding or themed wedding, then dress according to the theme and style.

2) "DON'T SWEAT IT!" Consider the climate and time of year. If you are getting married in the south in mid-sum-

mer, you should go with a lighter, more breathable fabric. If your theme is a beachwedding, opt for white instead of the traditional black tux. In the winter months, a

traditional tux may do the trick.

3) LIKE "NIGHT AND DAY." Are you planning an evening or daytime wedding? The general rule is thatevening weddings or those after 6pm are considered more formal. Such a wedding calls for full dress, including tux, tuxedo shirt, cummerbund or vest, tieor bow tie, cufflinks and studs and tuxedo shoes. Daytime weddings can be less formal. Although a tux is still appropriate, somecouples opt for a dressy suit with tuxedo accessories.

4) IT'S ALL ABOUT YOU! Find your personal style and show some flair, whether it is the style of your tux

shirt or the cufflinks and studs that you choose. A touch here and there can really make the look your own.

5) DON'T BE LATE FOR YOUR OWN WEDDING! Don't procrastinate! This is not something you sit on until a couple of weeks beforeyour wedding. Finding the right tuxedo takes time, as do fittings to make it look justright. Alterations can take a few weeks. If you're having the tux custom made, allow 2 months.

6) IT JUST AIN'T FITTING! Make sure it fits. There should be no pulling, puckering, sagging or drooping. Thelength should cover your socks when you are walking but not puddle on the floorwhen you are standing. A professional will be able to help you make the right choices and get a fit that will be both comfortable and flattering.

7) AHHHHHH, THIS FEELS GOOD! Yes, you can be comfortable in a tuxedo, if it fits well and is made from a nice, high-quality fabric. When you figure in the photo sessions, the wedding ceremonyand the reception, not to mention all that dancing, you will be wearing this tuxedofor quite a while.

8) WHEN A LITTLE "BLING" WILL DO! Tuxedo shirts require cufflinks and studs. Here is where you can flaunt your personal taste, by choosing from simple gold knots to gorgeous inlays. You don'thave to spend a fortune. Unless the set is under a jeweler's loupe, costume cufflinksand studs will achieve the same look.

9) WHO WANTS "PRE-OWNED," ANYWAY! Consider buying rather than renting. A tuxedo is no more expensive than a goodquality suit. You would never rent a suit, so why rent a tux? Plus, you don't knowwho's worn it before... yuck! The fit will look better and the fabric will feel great on atuxedo that you buy or have made... Most importantly, you get to keep it.

10) YOU ARE MY SUNSHINE! Polish and shine! Shoes finish off your look. Make sure they are clean and polished.Black patent leather is the standard. Don't forget to break them in if they are new.The last thing you want to think about during this momentous occasion is how muchyour feet hurt.

So enjoy yourself and have the time of your life!

Your wedding day is just months away, and the time has come for youto select a photographer. You have spoken to several in the pastweeks, and they all want to know what style of photography you aremost interested in. You're not up on the current trends inwedding photography and could use a brief review.

There are two basic approaches to wedding photography: portrait and photojournalistic. In the former, subjects pose for the pictures; in the latter, they don't; theshots are more candid. Many brides and grooms opt fora combination of the two, often hiring a photographer familiar with both styles or separatephotographers for each style.

Photojournalism has become quite popular inweddings in recent years. Couples want to see thestory of their wedding unfold from what goes onbehind the scenes in the dressing rooms to the connections made at the reception. Photographerswork to capture all of the little moments-the flowergirls' mischievous grins as they chase each other inthe dressing room, the look on the father's face when hesees the bride for the first time, the mothers' intensity as they light the unity candle.

In spite of the popularity of photojournalism, portrait wedding photography is not going away any time soon. Themajority of couples still want the standard posed portraits. These days, however, many are choosing to have their wedding portraits taken with ahigh-end fashion approach. A throwback to fashion magazine shoots, in-vogue wedding photography maximizes the glamour of the momentand makes the couple look their best, almost like celebrities, through digital image editing and manipulation. Shots are very artistic and the editing is very skilled.

When it comes to the style of your wedding photos, it is your choice. You can stick to formal portraits or go for more candid shots. To ensureyou get what you want, select a photographer with care. Interview eachof the candidates on your list, find out what their interests are and reviewtheir portfolios. If they seem more familiar with portrait photography andyou are interested in having portraits and candid shots, you may want tolook for someone else. For the best results, find a photographer who is comfortable with both styles and has some experience with the in-voguetrend if that's what you're after.

When it comes to the wedding cake, couples have manyoptions. Some may skip the cake entirely and go with adessert bar instead. Some may order one small weddingcake and |several sheet cakes to serve to their guests. Some may forgo the main cake and serve smaller cakesin various flavors at the reception tables. Whatever yourpersonal preferences, make certain you discuss the matter in great detail with your fiancé, and should youdecide to go with a wedding cake, keep the followingtrends in mind.

The wedding cakes of today hardly resemble those of yesterday. Gone for the most part are the rich, three-tiered, heavily decorated cakes and in their place isa wide range of cakes customized specifically for thebride and groom.

When selecting a wedding cake, couples often look to the location, theme and season of their celebration as aguide. A simple affair on the beach in the middle of summer might not call for the same type of cake as a formal evening affair in the winter.

The actual design of the cake is up for grabs. Some couples may opt for the traditional three layers, while others may go for fewer or additional layers. Tiers can beof the same or different heights with the same or alternating designs. Some couples may request thedesign of their wedding cake incorporate the traditional

flowers, either made of silk or frosting, while others maychoose dots or scrollwork. Although once popular, basketweaves and swags appear to be on their way out, as doplastic columns and foil boards.

Common cake flavors include carrot, chocolate, lemon, spice and vanilla, with many couples requesting eachlayer of their cake to be a different flavor. Some couplesgo an alternative route and choose unusual flavors likeespresso, hazelnut and gingerbread. Frosting may bebuttercream or fondant, though many couples todayseem to favor the former.

As for the top of the cake, couples no longer have to stickto the traditional bride-and-groom cake toppers. They cango with flowers, sculptures or monograms.Monogrammed letters in silver or tin make for stylish caketoppers. For those that prefer bride-and-groom toppers, they'll be glad to know that the traditional toppers havemade a comeback and can be customized. Manycompanies now make toppers that match the actual brideand groom in hair color, skin color, age and more.

These are just some of the hottest trends in wedding cakedesign. Whatever type of cake you choose, make sure itis flavorful and presented well. It should serve as a focalpoint at your reception, so place it in a prominent positionand decorate the area around it.

The trend for brides is to find ways to make their gowndesign unique, one-of-a-kind. Tami Hoatson, owner of

JJ Bridal, said that today's brides are looking forsomething that sets their gown apart.

"There's no such thing anymore as the traditional bride," Hoatson said. "More so than

the styles, it's the brides that are changing."Women are waiting longer to get married,

have been married before or have childrenbefore they get married. The traditional

picture of a bride has changed and that, inturn, has changed the way brides want todress for a wedding.

"Each bride wants something that isunique to her," Hoatson said. "Not so

much what the trend is."This year it appears that a lot of

brides are looking to add a lot of"bling" to their look. Feathers, colorand a lot of rhinestones seem to be

popular. In the past, lacey veils covering the face were standard, but a brightly colored hat withflowers or simply a grouping offeathers in the hair has been

found to be effective. Another aspect that has becomepopular is a gown that comes apart.

"Some gowns now come apart at the bottom so thebride can wear it as a long dress or as a short dress,"Hoatson said.

The long dress can be worn for the wedding ceremony, but the bride can then remove the bottom part so she isbetter able to participate at the reception.

Gowns are now being offered with subtle colors as well. Not only can the accessories have colors, but a soft coloring in the material of the gown can add anotherunique expression for the bride.

The cost varies depending on what the bride wants tospend.

"I've seen an increase in the amount of money bridesare willing to spend this year compared to previously,"Hoatson said. "I think the economy is coming back so theyare not hesitating as much on price."

Hoatson said her prices range from $500 to $1,500 fora gown, although those prices depend a lot on what isadded in terms of "bling" and accessories.

Not so traditional anymore, but brides are looking to becreative and unique in their choices of styles for one of themost special days in their life.
