ANNUAL REPORT OF THE SECRETARY GENERAL OF THE BRICS CHAMBER OF COMMERCE & INDUSTRY, NEW DELHI (INDIA) FOR THE YEAR 2013-14

Presented to the Second Annual General Meeting on27th September, 2014

Good evening: Esteemed members of the Governing Body, Founder and Life Members, Overseas and Corporate members and distinguished panel of Senior Advisors, Honorary Advisors and Honoured guests.

It is a great honour and privilege for me to address all of you on behalf of the Governing Body of the BRICS Chamber of Commerce and Industry. I am indeed delighted to welcome all of you to the second Annual General Meeting of our fast growing non-governmental, non-profit organisation which with its global vision and a pragmatic approach aims to make the world a better place to live-in. I thank all the members for their support and cooperation in strengthening and helping the Chamber to grow over past 2 years. Through your immense cooperation we’ve been successful in creating awareness among the authorities towards serious problems faced by businessmen engaged in bilateral trade between India and other BRICS countries, also the problems faced by the billions of common people worldwide.

The year 2013-2014 has been significant as it has been a year with some great successes. On the positive note, last year, the Chamber had offered an enhanced array of Business and social networking that attracted greater number of satisfied participants, whose robust participation and continued support is gratefully accepted and whole-heartedly appreciated. I would now like to make a brief mention of the major activities of our Chamber during the period under Report as well as informing new members about the progress achieved since inception of our organization.

With the blessings and support of our members, backed by similar help from distinguished members of the Advisory Council, your organisation has entered the third year of its journey towards creating awareness about the fast changing world. It is my proud privilege, as the Founder Secy Gen, to present my second report before this august body. Before I give you details of our activities during the year 2013-14, I shall crave your indulgence to speak a few things to elaborate upon the goals of our Chamber. This has become necessary to clarify some of the doubts arising in the minds of our stake holders.

While drafting the charter of your Chamber, we have taken a long term perspective of the fast changing needs and aspirations of emerging economies. Today, the BRICS group comprise of only five countries. Like South Africa was added to convert the group BRIC into BRICS, who knows how many more countries will get added to this Bloc in the future. There is already a clamour among a host of countries to join the group. It was this in mind that we have named our Newsletter ‘BRICS & BEYOND’. To accommodate a wider spectrum of emerging realities, we purposely included “neighbouring and friendly countries” in our charter of activities for a wider reach, following the principle of “Vasudhyeykudumbakam”. After all, both the economy and the culture of neighbouring countries have had a lot to do with each other for centuries.

The main objective of our Chamber is to promote maximum good of the maximum number. Moreover, sustainable growth is the only way to protect our Mother Earth and support the teeming millions. No single entity can prosper in isolation. The strength of any nation lies in its allies and friends. Therefore, there should be no reluctance to outreach for wider acceptance.

• Workshop on Affordable Healthcare (14th May’14)

India, with the second largest population in the world, comprises about one sixth of the world’s population. The dilemma lies in the fact that 70 per cent of the Indian population is living in semi-urban and rural areas, whereas ironically 80 per cent of our private and public healthcare facilities are located in urban areas. This makes the majority of its population suffer from lack of healthcare reach.

Even after having outstanding hospitals that cater to the healthcare needs of a large number of patients from abroad, healthcare in India still remains out of the economic reach of majority of rural population.

To address the rising issue of Affordable Healthcare in India, BRICS Chamber of Commerce & Industry organised a workshop on this issue inviting eminent doctors, policymakers, government officials and delegates from various embassies.

Dr. P.K Dave, A Padma Shree Awardee and the Chairman of Department of Orthopaedics at Rockland Hospitals, Former Director, AIIMS, was the Chief Guest for the event. Drawing from his experience, he stated some of the limitations on the government’s part while formulating and implementing healthcare policies. He focused on proper utilisation of resources and reforms in medical/health education.

The distinguished speaker, Dr.A.K Mukherjee, Director General, Indian Spinal Injury Centre, New Delhi, addressed the gathering by giving an overview of the global scenario. He focused on infrastructure and accessibility drawing on his vast and long experience in the medical profession and career.

Dr. S.B Shashank, the guest speaker, Special Secretary, Health and Foodworks / Drug Controller, Govt. of NCT of Delhi, steered his views towards the “affordability” aspect and with the help of facts he showed that affordability is not an issue concerning poor but whole of the nation. He stressed on the importance of reservation of certain percentage of beds in OPD and ICU for the poor in private hospitals.

After such informative addresses by the above mentioned guest speakers, a panel discussion was held, which was addressed by, Mr Deepak Wadhawan, Director, All India Heart Foundation, New Delhi and Advisor at India Centre of Excellence project, World Heart Federation, Geneva. Dr. Devashish Saini, an AIIMS graduate, with MSHI (Master of Science in Health Informatics) from University of Alabama, Birmingham, USA and the Founder of Ross Clinics, and Dr. Harish Bhalla, who was selected

investments, • Special mention by Dr. Bhalla about his work on setting up rural healthcare clinics in villages of
