HistoryIn 1929, only briar patches covered a 175-foot hill located on the western outskirts of Sioux City, Iowa. But two people – Mother Mary Dominica Wieneke, Major Superior of the Sisters of Saint Francis, and the Most Reverend Edmond Heelan, Bishop of the Sioux City Diocese – had a vision. They saw that hill crowned with a Catholic college for women. Mother Dominica and Bishop Heelan met on March 9, 1929 with members of the Sioux City community. Businessmen attending that meeting committed themselves to raising $25,000 to support the establishment of the college in Sioux City. After this showing of community support, significant events followed in rapid succession. On Sept. 18, 1930, the college, named Briar Cliff after the hill on which it is located, was dedicated. Four days later, 25 women started classes in Heelan Hall, the only building on campus. In 1937, the University’s two-year program was extended to four years. Fifty-five men were admitted to Briar Cliff in 1965 and co-education was formalized in 1966 with the admission of 150 full-time male students. The innovative Weekend College program started in the fall of 1979. The spring of 1980 saw the addition of a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. A Master of Arts in Education was implemented in the summer of 2001. The college officially became a University on June 1, 2001. The University’s academic growth required an expanding physical plant. As time passed, more buildings began sprouting from the briar-covered hill: a four-story addition to Heelan Hall in 1948; the library and Our Lady of Grace Chapel in 1959; Alverno Hall, a women’s residence, in 1965; a gymnasium in 1966; Toller Hall, a men’s residence, in 1967; Noonan Hall in 1968; the Newman Flanagan Center in 1982; the addition of three classrooms in the theatre in 1986; the completion in 1988 of the Baxter-DiGiovanni Living & Learning Center; KLIF-AM campus radio station in 1987; and the renovated dining hall in 1989.

The $6 million, 43,350-square-foot Stark Student Center opened in the fall of 2000. Additionally, extensive renovations to Alverno Residence Hall have expanded Briar Cliff’s recreational facilities. The construction of the McCoy Arnold Center, completed in 2004, further enhanced recreational facilities. On Sept. 1, 2011, Briar Cliff formally broke ground for a $10.75 million addition and renovation of Heelan Hall, slated for completion in September 2013. The project will involve the addition of a three-floor wing with state-of-the-art science laboratories, a business case room, general classrooms and a four-story atrium. The Heelan Hall project will include new heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems along with renovation of various classrooms and labs in the existing structure.

Battle On This year’s Briar Cliff football team intends to do just that. There is much excitement about head coach Tom Rethman’s 2012 Chargers. The team returns seven starters on each side of the ball from a team which went 2-9 a year ago. Offensively, the unit is expected to be headlined by a duo of playmakers in senior Bryce Harshman and junior Michael Becker. Harshman earned second team laurels as a wide receiver/kick returner racking up 780 receiving yards and scoring eight touchdowns. Injury limited Becker to only three games last season, but the tight end scored twice in those contests.

Sophomore PJ Quiroga is the Chargers’ most experienced quarterback after seeing late-minute action in six games a year ago. He was 11-33 for 103 yards and two scores. He is expected to be pushed by freshman transfer Kevin Van Egdom, who comes to BC from Missouri State University and a number of first-year signal callers.

Sophomore Brady Van Dusen is slated to be the Chargers’ starter at fullback, while junior James Sabin could push for time. Eight running backs are listed on the Chargers’ roster. Sophomore Robert Wilson carried the ball 104 times for 315 yards (28.6 yards/game) and two scores. Harshman led all BC receivers last year in both catches (52) and yards (780). He was third in the league in receptions, fourth in receiving yards, fifth in receptions/game and ninth in scoring. He produced the fifth-best single game receiving performance in the GPAC last year with 162 yards against Concordia. Sophomore Bret Van Muyden is coming off a stellar freshman campaign which saw him collect 32 passes for 308 yards, both stats were second only to Harshman. Becker and senior Troy Dobbins give the Chargers one of the league’s top tight end tandems. The duo combined for 343 yards on 29 catches a season ago.

The team’s success this season could come down to the play of its offensive line. Junior Wes Bell, an honorable mention all-GPAC lineman, should be surrounded by a few familiar faces in senior Matt Solomon, juniors Jameel Cunningham, Emmanuel Saint-Louis and Josh Webb and sophomore Cody Jordan. That being said, several newcomers will push for early playing time including freshmen Marshall Dickson and AJ Glaros. The Chargers allowed a league-high 29 sacks, last season.

Defensively, a new d-coordinator will be calling the shots this season in Justin Mohning. Mohning’s top returners include senior outside linebacker Jordan Lester, an honorable mention all-GPAC performer in 2011, sophomore defensive tackle Derreon Richardson, senior free safety Chance Colvin and junior inside linebacker Marcell Moody. Lester had 42.5 tackles last season and was second on the team with 7.5 tackles for loss. Colvin was second on the team with 51.5 tackles and also notched 6.5 tackles for loss. Richardson had 25.0 tackles, while Moody had 14.5.

The Chargers have the most depth at the linebacker position. Veteran Lester is expected to be joined by a rotation which may include senior Julian Lee (5.5 tackles) and juniors Matt Delaney (29.0 tackles), Moody and Harry Wentland (team-high 54.0 tackles). The Chargers’ defensive backfield is deep, but inexperienced. Senior Chance Colvin and sophomore Troy Hooks have the most game experience. In his first season at free safety, Colvin was second on the team with 51.5 tackles in 2011, while Hooks finished with 7.0 tackles. They are expected to be joined by sophomore Steve Trujillo, who returns to the team after a one-year absence and sophomore Eric Nicholsen, who played primarily on special teams a season ago. Several newcomers are expected to push for immediate playing time including West Los Angeles College junior transfers Eddie Ficklin and Marquette Harper. Of the Chargers’ seven transfers, six were on the defensive side of the ball, including five

defensive backs. Richardson, although only a sophomore, anchors the Cliff’s defensive line. He will be joined on the defensive front by seniors Paul Blanchard (29.5 tackles) and Cody York (5.0 tackles) and juniors Eric Jones (12.0 tackles) and Mike O’Brien (26.5 tackles).

In the off-season, the Chargers added Corey Miller to their coaching staff as the team’s defensive backs and special teams coach. Miller will have one of the league’s top returnmen at this disposal in Harshman, who had 38 returns for an average of 18.7 yards/return. Harshman led the league with 710 return yards in 2011.

The Chargers will open their 2012 schedule with a conference game at Doane, Sept. 1. The Chargers will then play their only game of the month at their Memorial Field, Sept. 8, against Graceland.
