POP3: What is it?

POP3 (Post Office Protocol 3) is the set ofinstructions that your computer uses toretrieve e-mail from a server (Internet

Service Provider or Internet Mail Host). Examples of the above are:

Gmail, Comcast, Embarq, Hotmail (Windows LiveMail), Yahoo, or, if you own a domain, from yourdomains mail host.

What about SMTP?

SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) isthe set of instructions that your computeruses to send mail. Generally Internet

Service Providers and Internet Mail Hostsuse different servers for SMTP and POP3.

Webmail

The interface that E-Mail providers on thenet use (Hotmail, Yahoo, AOL Mail,Comcast, etc) to allow you access to

your e-mails.

Web vs. Offline E-Mail

Online E-Mail can only be accessed when on the web.

Offline E-Mail programs such as Outlook, Outlook Express, andThunderbird allow the user to compose E-Mail messages offline aswell as keeping a copy of downloaded E-Mails for review when notconnected.

When using an offline client you may have to configure it to leave acopy on the server if you want a backup available online.

Also, it is recommended that you do notset up an account todownload on two computers at the same time. When you do this it isfirst-come first-serve, this means that one computer will have the e-mails and the will not.

Click Start

All Programs Outlook Express

click on Tools.

Select the Mail Tab. Click the Add Button.

that you have opened

Outlook Express you

Select Create a new

Internet mail account

as shown.

Click Next.

your name in the

highlighted area.

(as you would like it to

appear on outgoingmessages).

display POP3 as

shown.

The red area will bemail.comcast.net.

The green area will

be

smtp.comcast.net.

Click Next.

Type your Username inthe red area.

Type in your Password inthe green area.

If you want OutlookExpress to rememberyour password for youselect the checkbox in theblue area.

Click Next.

Now click Finish to close the wizard.

You are now able to receive mail throughOutlook Express.

on the Tools Menu.

Select the Mail Tab.

Select the newly

created account, click

properties (as shownin green).

Check the box in the

highlighted green

area.

Why use a .csv file?

Simple, it provides compatibility with many

programs.

Enter smtp.comcast.net in the

Outgoing mail server (SMTP):textbox.

Now click the Test AccountSettings button, this willverify your settings.

Click Next when finished.

You can now sendand receive e-mail

using Outlook 2000,

2002(XP), or 2003.
